The Kings waived point guard Orien Greene, team basketball president Geoff Petrie announced Thursday.

Greene, who joined the team during the offseason, started the season-opener in New Orleans for the injured Mike Bibby but was ineffective. The team signed free-agent point guard Beno Udrih before the second game.

Greene played in seven games and totaled six points and three assists.

Okay...

Five things:

1) shrug. You could see with Beno proving himself that Greene had no singificant role to play for us anymore. Must come as a shock to Ron though given he thinks the guy can be one fo the best PGs in the league.

2) however...was I wrong about Justin's contract status? I had assumed/argued that Justin was always on the roster, and that therefore nobody had to be released to make room for him. But now Justin comes back, and we simulataneously release Greene. Is that just coincidence? Or did we need the roster spot?

3) Not sure what the point of releasing him is/was at this time, if not the Justin thing. No longer has a role, pretty much washed out. But ont eh other hand if he's the 15th guy then wasn't hurting anything either and an extra body for practice. And don't think the money for those guys becomes guaranteed until mid December or some such.

4) so another FA signing maybe to tkae that spot? There were those big centers out there.

5) Or...a trade where we were taking back more bodies than we were sending? That's probably just more hope than anything else.

I know I can't speak for everyone, but I don't think anyone's going to lose any sleep over this waiving. Fact of the matter is, we gave Greene many chances--hell even 2 starts in what was previously our PG depleted team. He plays nice defense, but not enough to make up for his offensive and even passing/playmaking shortcomings; for a point guard, at least have one of the two, but to have none of the two, that's really a death knell. If there was anything he was good at, it was his tendency to get into foul trouble and his inability to regain minutes for us. I hate to say this, but his upside is probably only as good as Milt Palacio, who's not even in the league anymore. By the way, has anyone ever considered that the writing was on the wall in Greene's rookie season, no less? The guy has absolutely horrible efficiency on the stat sheet; his rookie year, he played 15 minutes a game for 80 games in a losing Celtics team where garbage time is undoubtedly inevitable, yet the guy only musters 3.2 ppg, 1.8 rpg and 1.6 apg (albeit 1.0 spg). Of course we signed him with the hopes of defensive intensity and the hope that he will improve his offense, but guys who get that sort of playing time and put up putrid stats--it's hard to see much potential. I know Greene will be given other chances in the league simply through his defensive reputation and height/strength, but I don't think he'll really stick for long at all.

I could imagine 4 or 5, but there's another possibility. While we're required to have 13 players, and can have up to 15, the league has to pay a surcharge to the Player's Association if the leaguewide average is over 14.0. If we're not going to play the guy, it may be better for him to let him look elsewhere, and it's definitely better for our relationship with Stern. So even if there are no transactions on the immediate horizon, it might be a positive move. We need to be on Stern's good side right now.

I think it's basically just a matter of us having no need for him whatsoever. And I know Petrie likes to keep at least one slot open just in case...

Wouldn't the surcharge go the other way? I.e. that the league has to pay if the number of players is LESS than 14. Certianly the players association wants more players employed, not less, so makes sense that if there was going to be some sort of fee/penalty payable to the players union it would kick in if teams were employing fewer guys, not more.

But I obviously haven't looked that up or anything.

Greene is D-League material anyway (if that).

Why he was every brought on is above me. He showed no PG skills, shooting skills, dribbled off his feet constantly, and just plain sucked..

Glad he was waived.. Good luck though!

I hadn't looked it up in a long time either, and you're right, I had it backwards, the CBA does encourage teams to carry players that they won't use.

So I guess we're back to impending FA, impending trade, or Geoff just liking to have a space available. After struggling to think up scenarios where the Mikki Moore signing made sense, only to find that none of them were happening (or even rumored), I'll go with "because Geoff just likes it that way." It's the one option that has no logic behind it, hence seems the most plausible.

Maybe they just cut the guy to save the $4.25 an hour they were paying him. I mean, I know he was at the absolute league minimum, but maybe the Maloofs wanted to spend that money on hamburgers and champaign. ;)

My thought as well - he wasn't guaranteed, so if he isn't going to play much/at all, why keep him? Gives him a chance to go elsewhere, and, like Justin, if he develops some and we develop the need, we can always call on him later wherever he's hiding. I know I like many others wanted Justin to stay when he was cut, but Greene has less use to us with Cisco and John and Beno here.....

I sure it's just so he can get an opportunity somewhere else and they obviously don't have to pay him anymore. We didn't need room to bring back Justin, the roster stands at 14 now.

Bibby + Artest for Starbury, Lee and Balkman works... ;)

Not really the best way to work that trade, IMO.

We need to find a way to re-spark the Kobe to Chicago talks by sending Starbury to the Lakers. And of course we would get Tyrus Thomas, draft picks, ending contracts, and we would dump our stinky contracts. ;)

Starbury is a 20 million big head, egoistic, time bomb waiting to destroy another team. And you won't get rid of him till 2009. I'd rather trade Artest + SAR for Charlie Villanueva + Simmons + Draft Picks.

We'll get a young and good PF(Villanueva) who may already be unhappy there as Yi is eating his minutes as starter. Plus Simmons which can be a good backup SF(even if he gets injured at least we have good wing players). And some good draft picks just to match the salary.

Bucks will get a good defender in Artest, and SAR maybe more happy there as his minutes should be guaranteed and also the Bucks sure need some good veterans.

Might be worth a try since we are not guaranteed that Artest will be back next season. :)

Justin was on the roster all the time and regarding this: if I remember correctly they sum all the guys with contracts and if it's less than 14 per team NBA pays NBAPA minimum salaries of 2-year players needed to make it 14 per team.

Didn't mean to get you alarmed, we were just joking around!

I'm not expecting Marbury or any other trade, because I don't think anyone wants what we've got, unless it's to unload bad contracts on us, and we're already all stocked up on those. Maybe we could get draft picks for Martin. The rest? Naaah.

Like everyone has said, no one will lose sleep over this roster change. He isnt a player that should be playing in the NBA right now...period. Im just glad we were lucky enough to get udrih, yeah beno isnt the best player in the world but he is much better then the crap we could have thrown out there at point guard.

Its just funny that the kings waited to adress their point guard needs right after bibby got injured.
