[News] Kings trade Jonas to Denver for Saric

Yeah I can’t figure out what everybody wants around here. They want actual talent traded for a rebuild but get bent out of shape when we trade a backup center that is well past his prime
Because this is not a rebuild. As long as you have Domas, DDR, Lavine, and Monk on the team, you are not rebuilding. If you want to rebuild, you trade these guys, hopefully to a winning situation, sell Keegan on a concrete plan, and build around him, Keon, Carter, and whatever assets you can pick from the trades.

Without that, you aren't rebuilding. And if you aren't, you don't want to bleed talent to save some money. We were already a guard heavy team which added an SG as our FRP, and Dennis as our primary FA. Meanwhile, we lost Val and Jake, and are not certain if Lyles is coming back. All in all, we are more imbalanced, and worse talent wise than at the end of last season. We have added 4 front court players in Maxime, Cardwell, Saric, and Eubanks. The first two are completely unknown at NBA level, and the latter two are a serious talent downgrade.

With Dennis on the roster, most of the back court minutes will go to Dennis, Keon, Monk, and Lavine. DDR will have to play the 3, and Keegan the 4. Barring injuries, Carter and Nique will see minimal court time, unless one of them is made to play out of position (I'm guessing Nique will play some 3, while Carter will play minutes at 1 behind Dennis and Monk).

Now, even if not happy with them, I can accept some of these decisions. The team likely felt that a proper PG was needed. If Carter was not deemed up to the task, and Dennis was the best available, you have to go with him to keep others happy and productive. The Val trade was just a salary dump, which is good only for the owners. My trouble is that the team has shown little vision in balancing out the roster. Jake's departure was always a likely scenario. Was any effort made to trade Lavine/DDR/Monk for a replacement? Perhaps, but I didn't hear absolutely any noise. Same with finding a solid PF, who can eventually allow Keegan to play more 3 (probably our biggest need).

Will we see some moves around the trade deadline? Let's hope. However, so far, other than using a future asset to add a pick in this draft, not impressed by the moves of the FO.

This is a great post but we have a LOT of offseason left before even thinking about a trade deadline. We're just getting started

Sasha's deal was unprecedented iirc. There was a lot of talk about whether the NBA would allow his full contract to come off the cap or what have you. I think had that been known upfront we'd have just let him walk?

Flirting with the politics rule here but speaking as an expat…. I get it.
As an expat myself he will still be an expat BUT 3 hours flight away from home (that is similar with living somewhere else in US and not where your team is located).
It is really weird how this info first appeared like a month ago, was the trade involved with his desire to leave the league and it was again a bad move for Kings like trading Sasha and assets together to get rid of him?
He has a bigger contract to buy out compared with Sasha, its not making much sense.

I think they are talking about using Saric's contract to match salaries so I don't know. Saric may be in the same boat.

It's also possible getting traded once again was the final straw in a will he or won't he. Can't be nice.

Two more years til my child graduates high school... ex-pat certainly back on the table.

Saric was rumored from the same site (Basketnews) to be approached by the new Dubai club that will be playing in the Euroleague but way before the Jonas news appeared (that I wrote in the Lithuanian Giants thread) and for Saric it would kind of make sense since he didn't really have a role in the Nuggets and in the NBA perhaps overall.

I still can't fully understand what Jonas has to do to be released. He has to pay the Nuggets himself all those (or most of) 10mln to buy out his contract? Cause that's what Sasha did last summer but the amount was smaller and most of it came from Olympiakos owners. And Nuggets cap won't be affected no matter what?

Is the trade happening, there are conflicting articles, some claim that no problem, Nuggets will have 10mln extra if Jonas will pay his way out, but others claim it's the opposite. If we add the fact that they try to "merge" this trade with Detroit and/or GSW (for Kuminga) makes things even more complicated.

I haven't really understood what changes after the 6th of July that the trade should become official (not just for the trade but in general). After the 6th of July the restricted agents that haven't found a higher offer in another team will stay at their club if they had made an offer before? How about the UFA, does it change anything for them? Westbrook, Brogdon, Lillard etc. Or they just officially can sign their contracts (and trades to be finalised) after 6th of July passing that ... "moratorium".

Meanwhile, I think Kings is holding the Warriors hostage in giving up Kuminga? As I look at the salary cap and 1st apron, I think this is what happened. Warriors is offering Kuminga in the range of about $10mil/yr. The Kings threaten to offer Kuminga something like $20mil/yr by getting rid of Malik Monk's contract (which is about $19mil?). So if the Kings offer Kuminga $20mil/yr, the Warriors will have to eat the 1st apron to retain him because the Warriors still need to sign other players which will not be enough to sign Kuminga without going over the 1st apron. I think it's a game of chicken right now? Kings are waiting to see how much the Warriors is depleting their cap before they jump at Kuminga offer?
