Kings to begin contract negotiations with Cousins

Lets be honest, our success relies on DMC becoming a top 3 big man in this league. I feel like all our moves have basically given DMC the keys to this franchise. It's ride-or-die. Give him the max...lets roll with DMC...he's our only hope. I think we will be too good to get a top 5 pick next season.

And that's the whole story in a nutshell.

It'd be a hell of a lot easier to stomach giving DMC the max contract if he :

* started actually at least jogging down the court instead of walking the way he has the habit of doing.

* stopped looking gassed past the 1st quarter, and just lazy-out the rest of the game when he's not getting his stats that night.

All the kid has to do is put his effort where his mouth is, and he will win over even THIS cynical of city, and even the NBA Olympic team is ready to fall for him.

After hearing him pulling the same stuff that makes everyone nervous about him in the first Olympic scrimmage, why is he continuing to do it?

Does anyone actually think that he'll fix those AFTER he gets his max contract?

Care to explain? I must have been watching a different scrimmage. The one I saw had him pulling in 7 boards, and looking pretty involved until he got pulled (and I still think there was a physical reason for that).

For me, I'd wait till we see how he comes into TC and with what mindset. Does he come in and be the leader from Day 1? Is he in great shape? Does he show if he's ready to embrace that leadership role?

I think USA basketball was a good positive for him. Scrimmage was a bit disappointing, but I put about as much stock in that game as I do Summer League. Earning some good comments from a guy like Colangelo is a great start, someone who previously showed his distaste for Cousins.

U Get him extended after TC anyway. But I HOPE we see a Cousins ready to be the leader of this team from day 1. He's had his growing pains and now it's time to step up

Cuz is getting the max wether he plays in Sacramento or anywhere else including Europe. My hope is we can get rid of some contracts (thorntan, Hayes, Thompson) so we could go out and get marcin gortat in the summer. Gortat and cousins in the front court would be lethal cuz will have problems with griffin of the world but how would the stop him

Glad we are negotiating with Cousins, shows we are taking our franchise player seriously and we don't want to risk anything in Free Agency 2014.

Just my opinion, I noticed during an interview when he was ask about ownership saying publicly that they intend to build the team around him, his head raised up quickly and he said "it is about time someone said it". Maybe he felt disrespected before, I don't know. I do think he knows and his agent knows he can get a max deal somewhere and with his mindset it would be best to give him the max asap. As someone mentioned he knows his good friend John Wall is getting his done. Miami,LA Lakers (Shaq working with him) are just 2 that will have a ton of cap space. Remember what a motivated Cousins can do, he went off for the fans in that last home game. He is willing to build in Sacramento rather than running to an instant contender, pay him.

If anyone bothers to pay attention to Cuz when he speaks about the team or sacramento, he uses the word loyalty a lot. If he thinks your loyal to him, he'll be loyal to you. If he believes your treating him one way, and someone else on the team a different way, then he loses trust in you. I've said it a million times, Calapari is about as much of a get in your face coach as you'll find, and Cousins looks at him like a father figure. Why? Because Calapari always told him the truth. No BS! And he treated everyone the same! If Cousins has a game where his defense is terrible, but the whole team also plays bad defense, and then the coach singles him out as the scapegoat, you lose his trust.

I don't think this is a time to play games with him. He's done just about everything he can do but get down on his knee's with a bible and swear his loyalty to the team and the city. Its a gamble we need to take. This is not the time for the bitter pill!
This.

I for one have no problem giving him the max, we aren't going to get another caliber player of DeMarcus anywhere else so we might as well lock him up long term and hope to god he doesn't implode and gets his game and act together as he has a new regime watching over him with full support.

I have absolutely no idea what your talking about! In his first year in the league, yes, he did all those things. But every year he's been in better shape and done less of what your talking about. I saw nothing in the USA scrimmage game that your describing. Except when he appeared to be hurt on that one play. Did you even watch the game?

What is it that leaders do? I'm not being sarcastic, I really want to know what your opinion is. The problem as I see it, is how will he be portrayed when he tries to lead. Like it or not, he still has his reputation hanging over him, and while someone might perceive him as a leader when he gets on a teammate during a game for missing a rotation, or not running the play that was called, another might call him a trouble maker that can't get along with his teammates. Something they would never say about Duncan, or Michael Jordan. Anyone can step up and call themselves a leader, but if no one follows, you end up going into battle alone.

He's going to need the full support of the organization to become the leader, and any player that doesn't buy in, needs to be gone. They don't have to like him, nor he them, but they need to know who the leader is, or else. As for his play being disappointing, I guess I had a different expectation. Cousins said several times in interviews that he couldn't play his normal game. That he had to sacrifice his normal game and play the role they wanted him to play. An entirely different situation than he's used to. By all accounts, most of the coaches there had nothing but good things to say about him, especially his work ethic.

I think he will do fine, he catches a lot of grief undeservedly due to his reputation. I have read some say his problems "on and off the court", I must have missed something but I have never heard of off the court problems. I have met him, although briefly at an autograph signing with my son. He was nothing but a cut up laughing and having fun. I know some of the stories do not get out when he funds out of pocket for some kids to go to camps, and I have never heard of incidents with his attitude.
On the court,he wants to win, gets frustrated and has done things that result in the technicals and suspensions. That has to stop and it is up to him to change. His reputation has got him unearned problems like the tech that got rescinded that the female ref gave him. He gets hacked with no calls and hopefully that can change over time.
I hope the new coaching staff isn't afraid to challenge him, I remember he and Calipari would argue and be in one anothers face, Cousins would respond and now has a friendship and stays in contact with Cal for advice and friendship. He is different as Cal said, he is still only 22 yrs old and is the building block of the Kings. I for one say lets get behind him and let him know it. I respect him for wanting to build a winner in Sacramento.

For Cousins, it's about staying out of the headlines for non-basketball related reasons. No more unnecessary techs. No more getting thrown out of games. No more suspensions. No more questions about his hustle on defense and whether or not he's giving 100% on a nightly basis. Not only coming into to TC in shape, but putting EVERYONE else to shame with how good of shape he's in. I want him setting the standard for everyone else on the roster that if you're not putting as much work in as he is, you're hurting this team.

I think doing those things validates him as a leader more than being the guy who gets on his teammates for a missed rotation or not running a play or whatever. Teammates will naturally just start listening to what Cousins has to say and following his direction. But he first needs to make it known that he's the unquestioned leader of this team. That doesn't happen with words, but by what he does on and off the court.

I take a look at guys like Duncan and how they "coach" on the floor. Sometimes all he had to do is look at a player who messed up and they know what they did wrong. That level of respect from his peers is really impressive. But Duncan earned that respect with not just his production on the court, but how he conducted himself, how he prepped in the off-season, and how committed to staying at the top of his game during every game of the season. We'll be ok if Cousins can embrace even a fraction of that mindset

The only time he didn't come into training camp in shape was his rookie year. He changed his diet and workouts already.

First and foremost, they set the example for the followers. Work ethic, unselfishness, discipline, coachability. If he sets the example in those attributes in a very positive way, he'll take a huge step forward for being the leader. All the "talk stuff" is empty air as far as I am concerned, just blather for the media, management, and fans. Talk is very cheap. If he walks the walk, everything else will easily fall into place. In fact, when it comes to Cousins, the more positive action, the less talk, the better.

The only non-basketball court related news Cousins has ever been in has been about his love for Sacramento. Did I miss him going on a dog kicking spree? Did he go Wayne Brady?

Nuh uh, he ataks kittys amd steels kandy from kids

I think the Kings have no choice than to give Cousins his money and make him their franchise player. It is a roll of the dice to be sure as he is far from a sure thing but he is the closest thing that the franchise has to dominate player.

@boogiecousins Thanks for the pic w/my son. Today was the most fun he's had since being diagnosed w/leukemia

Nice little moment on Twitter. Stuff like this may not seem like much, but getting positive images of himself like this out into the media is big if he wants to start changing his rep around the league. We know his off-court rep is way overblown, but the rest of the league does not.
