Looks like some solid all around contributions- the kind of stuff we need out of our players. Let's hope this carries over into the regular season.

Its a Wrap: Kings team at Vegas Summer League

What did we learn from this years one and only Kings summer league team? Here's my take:

1. Kevin Martin is for real and will start for us at 2 guard. He will have a veteran backing him up such as Evans or someone else with longer tenure including part of BJax.

2. Francisco is for real too. He just took a bit longer to get in the swing of things. He will be a major asset for us off the bench this year and will see a bunch of time. His defense and hustle and athleticism is sorely needed and he will earn time at both the 2 and 3.

3. Daniels is much better than last year but is still a "tweener" at 6-8 and 215 lb having played PF in college but is really a SF in NBA.

4. Archibald may have a chance in training camp and showed some NBA abilities. This year we are to carry 14 active players on the roster and NO INJURED RESERVE. He may well be #13 or #14.

5. Ronnie Price suprised most people with his overall court sense and PG play. He can score too as he was 2nd or 3rd leading scorer in all of NCAA last year. Good hustle but needs work on defense.

No one else seemed to really step up against summer league competition. Homan looked good early but seems to have faded. Yango is active but doesn't appear to be NBA ready. But what do I know? This is only personal observations not a pro view by any means. Anyway, thats my view. :)

P.S. Stats for the first three:

Cisco 5-11 1-4 and 4-4 = 15 pts, 5 reb, 3 ast 3 stl 2 blk 1 TO 32 min
Super K 7-19 1-4 and 6-7 = 21 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast 2 stl 0 blk 4 TO 37min
Archie 5-7 0-0 and 1-2 = 11 pts, 7 reb, 0 ast 0 sta 2 blk 3 TO 23 min

Martin's turnovers have seemed quite high in the summer league. Are people just dropping his passes because their unaware? (not on his level)

If you are active in passing and distributing in a summer league your TO's will be high. If there are no TO's or very view then normally that person is a ball hog and not distributing. Some of his passes were poor choices and others were to team mates not paying attention. But he at least is moving the ball and distributing it. No worry mate, now.

cool, thats what i was thinking, just needed some confirmation since you have seen them. i could see the teammates not paying attention part easily happening, especially if you are a creative passer.

Nice to see the consistant versitility in Garcia, his blocked shots and steals are not just luck the kid has skill in those areas, and that something our team needs.. I'm lovin his all around Christie game..

I don't understand the insistence on playing him as a PF. Kentucky during his years there often played small. They were quick and defensive minded. Chuck Hayes their PF last year was only around 6-8 and their starting center only 6-10. When the team is playing small ball in college it works, not in the NBA. He would be better as a deep bench SF rather than a street clothed PF.

Thanks, Cruz Dude. I really appreciate your first hand account, and I have learned to appreciate your knowledge of the game.

I have no problem with Kevin starting at OG as long as he plays with the confidence he has been showing in the summer leagues. From what I've heard and read, he is super talented and I would rather the Maloofs spend the MLE on a PF rather than picking up an OG.

Someone said it in another thread, but having TWO youngsters we can be excited about is really a different feeling for Kings fans. I'm glad to hear that Cicso is starting to find his court legs, so to speak...

Everything else aside, I don't think we're going to be bored this season.

Did he look like he actually felt he belonged out there? One of my main complaints about Daniels last season was that the few times he was on the court, he simply looked like someone they had grabbed from the stands to fill a gap...

In regards to Erik Daniels:

I am assuming this is directed to Cruz since he actually saw them play this year, but ....

In terms of last year, he didn't get enough minutes to get a fair assesment. (mind you, there wasn't anyone if front of him that I would want to give their minutes to him ...so catch-22) When I saw him get minutes last year, it was typically garbage time. What I did see for the most part was someone trying to stay in front of their man while defending and on the offensive side of the ball looking to pass first. He came from a school that puts a emphasis on team work and in garbage time players are doing their own thing for their own agenda. If you look at his stats, his overall field goal percentage is horrible but his 3pt percentage is at 50%. Both have too small a sample size to mean a thing. When he did shot, it often seemed like a desperation shot. His true percentage would probably be somewhere in between.

He could become a valuable role player given the right circumstances and he also could be a tweener that won't amount to squat. With my given bias, I hope he becomes a good role player for the team I root for. Other words, I hope he makes the cut.

Yes, it was directed at CruzDude, which is probably why I quoted him. ;)

As far as last year goes, I stand by my comment. When I attended Kings games, Daniels looked lost, apart from the rest of the team, etc. both during warm-ups, shootaround and the few times he actually stepped on the court for playing time.

I don't care about last season anyway.

I was asking Cruz how Daniels looked this year in the summer league. I was interested because it might be a real key to him returning to the Kings this season.

Not to be rude (well... ;) ) but I mean, who cares really if Erik Daniels returns to the Kings? Its like worrying about Corsley Edwards or Mateen Cleaves. Best of luck to Erik, but he'll be lucky to so much as stick to another NBA roster, and even if he does he's highly unlikely to ever determine the outcome of a single NBA game.

Hey, I was making pleasant conversation. It's not like we have a lot of new stuff to talk about.

You, rude? Perish the thought.

That part in bold makes a big difference. You don't catch those details while watching on the tube.

On the last part, despite what Brick says, he is a young man who seems to have his head on straight and I for one hope he makes it. Even if he never does more than warm the bench. Darn if I wouldn't like to get paid like that just to sit.:) On a serious note, it is good to have the players that are willing to take their roles as they are and not be worried about little details such as playing time.

I must have missed Erik's role last year. ;) I'm torn between: 1) to weight down the bench to make sure it didn't float off into the rafters; or 2) to get paid enormous sums of money to get to watch NBA basketball games from the best seats in the house.

His role? The league reguires so many players and he was one of those. He did what was expected of him, he sat. I would love to have his job under either the terms of 1) or 2). Sign me up.

Yeah if Cisco can turn into a T Prince(some compare Cisco to him)type of player, and Martin can be like Rip(Thats what adelman said he wanted him to be more like..even gave him a tape of Rip) in a couple seasons.Wishful but not imposible thinking. That would be fine by me. Either way your right should be exciting.

Martin and Garcia...

I know the summer league isn't the best way to judge a player’s talent. That will be done during practice. But Martin and Garcia aren't that much different, both around the same height and build. The only difference I see is that their games differ a little. Martin takes it to the whole better and takes more shots, due to his growing confidence and improvement. Garcia plays tougher D, and pretty much does everything well, including dishing some crazy passes. Martin may start, but I think Garcia has the overall game to eventually start or get a lot of PT. But either way the King's are in good shape IMO...Now we must get a freakin PF!! lol.
