[Game] Kings @ Spurs Game Thread 3/11/11

Two things. Every team should be kicking themselves twice for passing on Blair and he is doing as good of a job as possible on DMC. They aren't having to throw a double at him so the Spurs can play good defense on everyone.

There's always someone who gets passed up. Blair's knees were a definite concern at the time.

Love what Cisco just did there, and Cousins goes directly over and slaps hands with Omri.

Yup. Seems like Cisco is the only guy who can calm him down. He is more important to this team than he would be to any other team, hands down. Could be a Kings guy for his entire career.

On the other hand .. games like this one and the last one against Orlando make me wonder what the hell these guys do in practice. Its like we have no idea what we are SUPPOSED to do on defense. Do we have any sort of system? There is no consistency with what we are doing against the pick and roll besides getting scored on every time.

Cousins confuses me sometimes. He can EASILY overpower Tim Duncan, he's skinny. He needs to punish him back him down and do work.

It's tough to be consistent with your starting backcourt out, and your starting center playing on a bum knee. I actually think our defense was pretty good tonight. Numerous times we took away the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd option, and then they hit a corner 3, or something like that. It's tougher against SA then most, because they keep passing until they get the shot they want, are the best in the league as spacing, and know exactly where the 3rd, 4th, and 5th option is.

Pick & roll defense of course needs a lot of improvement, but that's also tough without Tyreke, and undersized guards out there in place of him.

Hmm, small glimmer of hope if the spurs miss FT's or we get a steal. Spurs played the last minute like the game was already over.

As if the Spurs commentators weren't annoying enough, one of them says Westphal is a master at drawing up plays in the final minute.

Bro that's not what I was talking about. I don't care who he is. Look at the body difference.

Look at the experience difference. Look at the fact that Duncan has been defending all comers -- with the possible exception of Shaq -- for 13 years. If Duncan were some rookie we knew nothing about you could say sure and try to guess based on body types. He's not. He's one of the best big men defenders of all time and we KNOW a hell of a lot stronger than the body suggests. We know this because basiclaly nobody has run him over his entire career.

I understand he's a HOF type defender and 13 something time 1st all defense. But really in this point of Tim's career, I expected a little more out of Cousins. If Cousins can do some things against Dwight Howard, who IMO is the best big man defender in the NBA, then why not Tim?

Well I will disagree with our defense being good tonight, but thats me. I just think we make it so easy on teams when they only have to run one simple play set and get pretty much whatever they want on it. And as far as the backout being injured ... I would like to think everyone on this team knows what the coach wants them to do on defense by now. If they are doing things 'right' according to the coach, than thats a big problem. If they just suck on defense then well ... not much you can do there.

Im a big 'defense is mostly effort' kind of guy as long as you have the tools. Jeter has the speed, Taylor has everything you want in a perimeter defender, Head is fine and Thornton is fine... they can perform better than this on defense.

We just look lost as a team on that side of the ball. So much scrambling and uncalled for helping.

I say we should blame Head.

I thought that dude was supposed to play defense? (3 blocks on Parker is cool... Parker droppin 27...Not so much)

Ah well... We didnt get blown out, and we're missing two starters. So...Moral victory?

While that's true, that's still not an excuse to keep attacking your man you have 30 plus pounds on.

Lets also not forget this is one of the best defensive teams in the last decade, with Duncan as the cornerstone, and great help defenders, as well as the best team in the league currently. Lets also remember this is a 20 yr old we're talking about, who hasn't played a full season yet, isn't surrounded by good shooters which help keep the help defense honest, and also put up 11 rebs, 5 asts, and 2 blocks. He helped in other areas.

... And I do like the effort of this team. But I cant help but think the coach is letting them down with bad offensive sets and a bad defensive system. Not to mention the notoriously terrible rotations that Westphal has used his entire time in Sacramento.

Instead of having Tyreke out there, and with Beno out, we often had Head/Thornton, Pooh/Thornton, or Pooh/Thornton/Taylor, which are all undersized. All things considered, plus our defensive anchor not playing much due to injury, I thought the guys did well on that end.

I mean, SA is the best team in the league when it comes to patience, running their sets, and execution, as their record proves. They often make good dfensive teams look bad. They blew us off the floor at Arco a few weeks ago, and then we come in tonight, extremely shorthanded, and fight until the end.

So, when I said they played good defense, I meant more of they played good defense for us, and everything considered being shorthanded essentially without Tyreke and Dally.

Because Duncan is smarter than Howard.
