Kings Playoff Standings Watch!!!

#1
In (dis)honor of the annual tanking threads, here is a place to track standings and game results as our Kings push for their first playoff birth since before social media existed...

Below are the standings. I know people are of different opinions, but I think the most important goal is finishing top 6, though top 4 would be amazing. But just make the playoffs. With that in mind, to me, my rooting interests are always as follows:

1) East over West is always best
2) in a West vs. West game, root for Denver, San Antonio, and Houston, if they are playing
3) In a West vs. West game where the above teams aren't playing, root next for OKC and Utah since they probably aren't trying hard for the playoffs
4) In a West vs. West game without the above teams, root for Memphis, Dallas, Phoenix, and LAC, on the theory that those look like the teams most likely to join us top 6
5) If Golden State, Minnesota, New Orleans, and Portland are playing, root for the team with the worse record.
6) Root for the Lakers to lose as many games as possible, because it is good for the playoff push and good for the soul

I think these general rules make sense because Memphis, Dallas, Phoenix, and LAC either made moves and/or have the talent to push for top 6. Plus, they are already all in the top 6. So in general, if they are playing one of the next five teams (GS, Minny, NO, Portland, LAL) it is good to root for a little separation to ensure we stay in the top 6. This is especially true since GS and NO have injury issues, and Portland and Minnesota have been generally mediocre.

Feel free to agree or disagree with the above rules. If you are hoping we hold on to home court then you are probably flip-flopping Rules 4 and 5 above.

But for tonight's slate, I am rooting for:

Jazz @ Pacers- PACERS
Pellies @ Thunder- THUNDER
Wolves @ Mavs- Mavs
Wiz @ Warriors- Wiz
Lakers @ Blazers- Blazers (in all honesty, a Lakers win is probably slightly better for us, but the sooner the Lakers are out of our picture, the happier I will be)

This is a tough one. Both with the same amount of losses. Kings have 2 back to games upcoming with the Thunder.

But with Zion out it maybe better for the Pels to win assuming the Kings don't lose 2 to the Thunder.

It is a tough one, but to me the Pellies have more talent (even without Zion) and clearly want the playoffs more. OKC seems like Utah to me. This was a fun season, we are better than people thought, there is something to build on, and now let’s get down to the serious business of ping pong balls.

I am curious OKC has sort of played themselves out of the race to the bottom so are they willing to take a swing at a mid-lottery final standing knowing they could still jump, or make the push. How many other teams' picks do they have this year?

Surprisingly, this year they only have a Clippers swap in the first round. In addition, they only have one second round pick (the most favorable between four - their own, Washington's, Dallas' and Miami's).

They only have two picks this year, and both those picks could very plausibly be their own!

First time besides 2018-19 I can remember watching the standings in February for Playoff seeding instead of tanking seeding!
We were right there in 2019-2020 too. I was at the New Orleans game when in March when the game was cancelled and season postponed. That’s why the KINGS made the cut for the “bubble” season. They were right in the mix for the play-in.

It's interesting to note that 18 of our remaining 26 games are (and, prior to the Dallas series 20 of our remaining 28 games were) against the nine teams who are currently 5 games or fewer below us. We managed .500 against the Mavs, but a stumble in the final third of the season will not only hurt us but also almost certainly help our opponents.

The saving grace is that our final game is against the Nuggets - we may NEED that game, but the Nuggets likely won't care, so we could possibly steal that one.

Those teams will all play each other too though right? so it's all a bit unpredictable as to who will throw in the towel and go for lotto odds at some point and whether or not that happens before or after we play them.

We have 3 games against the Blazers and zero against the Lakers. The sooner the Blazers go into tank mode the better for us. We absolutely want the Lakers in this game.

The Blazers 100% waved the white flag in their trade deadline moves but until they give Dame the rest of the season off they're going to be competing for the play-in spots.

Yeah, not getting a ton of help from the east tonight. Wiz had a 10 point lead in the 1st they blew immediately in the 2nd and are now down 5.

But still, a DAL loss, OKC loss and Lakers down 19 at half. I'd be fairly pleased if we could put some real distance between us and that 10th-13th cluster of UTA, OKC, POR and LAL. That seems like where the tier break is talent wise and team upside wise down the stretch.

honestly I am just happy with the Dallas loss, I hope the teams in the middle beat each other up. In the end if we nestle into the 3rd or 4th seed I'll be looking closely at who we would match up with more than anything.

im not sure. Hart wasn’t coming back so they prob figured getting value was smart.

Thybulle had 14 points 6 rebounds 3 blocks and a steal along with 4 3 pointers in his debut.

I know this is hilarious after all this time but I don't get Blazers games now. I didn't realize Thybulle had a nice night offensively.

I am going to the game tomorrow and it will be the first Blazers game I've watched since opening night.

Having most of our remaining games against the teams trying to pass us could be a good thing. We're sitting at #3 right now which means they all have to knock us out of our spot. It means we control our own destiny. Is this Kings team up to the challenge? We'll find out. Having Mike Brown on the sideline gives me confidence that our leadership is sending the right message. And if the team isn't up to the challenge in the regular season than we know how the playoffs would have gone anyway. Sooner or later you're either good enough to hang with the best or you're not. And if you're not, the sooner you find out the better.

New Orleans beat OKC in a close one

TWolves barely held on vs the Mavs.

Portland blowing out a Lakers team with no LeBron (AD has been pretty bad since returning from injury).

Warriors lead Washington at halftime.

Jazz cane back to win in Indiana.
No reason to think this trend will change. Too many of the good teams have health problems and too many of the fringe teams won't say die.

so what the hell, been browsing Rip City reddit and they went from "F cronin destroying the team can't do sh**" to loving the team after the Lakers win tonight. And yeah, they are very high on Thybulle now after being mad about Hart (who I had no idea apparently just didn't like living in Portland).

I still don't think they are meaningful contenders so seeing them slap LA around was fun. I won't be upset if WAS beats them tomorrow but I been watching that game and they sure look like ass against GS.

They are an interesting team for sure. Dame is playing out of his mind right now and Simon has been good as well especially from 3. Sharpe has had 3 straight impactful games and if they somehow unlocked something with Thybulle they might have something.

I'll be rooting for the teams closest to us in the standings to lose. I understand rooting for the 4-8 teams to beat up on the 9-13 teams to create some separation, but top 6 is the goal to avoid any potential play-in disasters. So give me Dallas losses all day to give us an extra half game cushion.
