Kings Offense Heating Up

Bricklayer

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
As we all know, the Kings got off to a VERY slow start to the season this year, and offensively we did not look like ourselves. The Vlade effect appeared possible. Through 5 games we were averaging 94 pts a game on .413 shooting as a team.

Well look at us 4 weeks later -- up to:
102.2ppg -- 3rd in NBA
.448 FG% -- 10th in NBA
25.0 ast/gm -- 1st in NBA
12.2 TO/gm -- 1st in NBA

Leading the league in BOTH assists and turnovers is pretty remarkable -- not only are we making great passes to set up shots, but we are doing it more efficiently than any team in the league. In fact our assist/turnover ratio as a TEAM is 2.05 A/TO, which leads the league by a mile -- #2 is Minnesota at 1.72. Only one team has managed a 2 to 1 A/TO in the last three years -- Dallas did it the last two.

We are starting to look very much like ourselves. In some ways better:

02-03
ppg: 101.7
FG%: .464
ast/gm: 24.8
TO/gm: 14.3
A/TO: 1.74

03-04
ppg: 102.8
FG%: .462
ast/gm: 26.2
TO/gm: 13.5
A/TO: 1.94

04-05
ppg: 102.2
FG%: .448
ast/gm: 25.0
TO/gm: 12.2
A/TO: 2.05

Old news.
That part of the Kings game was never a concern. The issues are on the other side of the court anyways

Actually the way we had started off, it was hardly old news with "The sky is falling" and "Now I'm really really really concerned" threads. I'm glad that we are getting back to Kings ball. It's the defensive issues and rebounding which is old news and unfortunately today's headlines as well.

Really? I disagree, many people were VERY concerned about those very things, both at the end of last year AND the beginning of the season.

Thanks for the stats Brick - it's nice to see that we're consistent with earlier years - it would be interesting to see how those stats compare with what the kings did the last month of so of last season - that's when things kind of broke down offensively. And I think our ability to return to our previous form this year (after a slow start) is not so much "old new" as some important adjustments that have been made at the beginning of this year- particularly Webber's acceptance of a modifed leadership role on the floor. So, yes, if we can take care of rebounding and defense - even though we don't run the floor like we did in previous years - we have a good shot at making the WCF.

been there done that. I do not think that it would be enough

Chris was concerned? Or Chris was the cause? If he was the cause, is he now the cause of why we are clicking?

Yes. He has the ball and when hes does it right we play great. Simple as that.
Yes, he was the cause that our game felt apart last season and yes he deserve the whole credid for our recent performances.

nice stats. our offense is our best defense.... i heard someone say that... it might have been here :D

i also think our offense could be better. peja has been inconsistant this year, and we've only seen that trademark shot a few times so far. i think he will do better as the year goes on.

GO KINGS!

If you just looked at last 10 games (obviously doesn't include texas triangle and a few more games after):

105 ppg - 2nd in NBA
97.90 ppg (opponents)- 10th in NBA
+7.40 ppg differential- 3rd in NBA

.462 FG% - 6th in NBA

27.2 ast/gm - 1st in NBA
19.10 (opponents) ast/gm- 5th in NBA
+8.10 ast/gm differential- 1st in NBA

11.9 TO/gm - 2nd in NBA
15.80 (opponents)- 10th in NBA
TO/gm differential- 3rd in NBA

7.90 steals/gm- 11th in NBA
6.50 (opponents) steals/gm- 6th in NBA
+1.40 steals/gm differential- 4th in NBA
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is where we start going south but we are gradually improving in these categories as well :

.445 (Opp) FG%- 20th in NBA

41.60 Rebounds/gm- 14th in NBA
44.60 (Opponents) Rebounds/gm- 23rd in NBA
-3.0 rebounds/gm differential- 23rd in NBA

3.70 Blocks/gm- 23rd in NBA

You gotta start somewhere, good to see these stats gradually improving from almost last in the league in most cases. If we can get to 15th or better in total defense and are the 1st, 2nd offense in the league I'll like our chances a lot better.

It is NOT all about Chris Webber at either end of the spectrum.

At the risk of repeating myself for the 100000th time, this is a TEAM sport. The whole team contributes in one way or another. Webber may be a catalyst, but no matter how good (or bad) he does, he cannot change the game by himself. It takes the rest of the team to follow his lead.

That's happening and good things are happening as a result.

It starts with Webber it ends with Webber. As you said everybody else follows his lead one way or the other.

piksi - If everyone else follows his lead, it is as much about them following as it is about him leading. You can not have a leader without followers, just as you cannot have followers without a leader.

;)

I see piksi's point. Webber is a going to be a dominanting presence no matter what - that's just what he does, and that's just the expectation of him every time he's in the game. It's basically what he chooses to do with that responsibliity, and how well, that will be the difference for the team.

I know.

piksi and I have this kind of relationship going...
