Kings notes: Miller is the scorer by default

No matter how many 15-footers, driving layups, breakaway dunks or even the rare three-pointer he sinks, Brad Miller isn't quite comfortable wearing a scorer's skin.

Even when he nears perfection as he did Tuesday night, scoring a season-high 31 points - just four off his career best - and hitting 14 of 18 shots from the field, the Kings center can't get accustomed to having his name on the marquee.

"I'm probably the only guy in the league who they say doesn't shoot enough," Miller said.

But when Chris Webber is out, as he was with an ankle injury in the Kings' much-needed 113-93 victory over the New Jersey Nets, Miller is willing to oblige on a short-term basis.

Did he ever.

Miller and forward Darius Songalia (eight points, six rebounds, three assists) filled in with more than the typical elbow grease, banging with Nets big men Nendad Krstic and Jason Collins down low as they answered with just 10 points.

Miller hit his last 11 shots between the second and fourth quarters, putting the Kings up 105-81. It was the latest evidence that a Webber-less Kings is still formidable, as they improved to 4-0 in games without him.

"I played 53 games without Webb last year, so I know when I've got to step up," Miller said. "I change my role. I'm cool doing it every now and then, and when Webb's out I'm more assertive."

A new view of Arco

No. 13 was the unlucky number for Rodney Buford, his cursed spot on the Kings bench where he spent so many games as the team's highest paid fan last season. But just like San Antonio's Tony Massenburg two days earlier, Buford was the latest former King to return with a how-you-like-me-now attitude in tow. He scored nine points as a spot starter, the result of Richard Jefferson's season-ending wrist injury.

Buford, like Massenburg, said he thought he could have been better used with the Kings. He was a temporary member, of sorts, signed as a free agent in late September 2003, waived in early December, then re-signed in early March when guard Bobby Jackson went down with an abdominal strain. Buford played 141 minutes in 22 games, averaging 1.9 points. "After sitting so much as the 13th guy, then coming in as a starter, I couldn't have dreamed it up any better," Buford said. "It was crushing. It hurt. ... It's nice to get more playing time, not sitting behind so many guys."

not good enough. How about more often than not. Every shot Miller takes is a good shot. If that takes away some of the webber's jumpers - even better

I would have to agree. He should be just as assertive (with scoring) with or without Webb in the lineup, he's that good. The results might not be the same with tougher opponents like the Spurs, but it's another big threat that opponents cannot take lightly.

And if it takes away from some of Pedaj's?

considering his FG% I would prefer Miller over everybody. The problem is that Pedja shoots lot's of threes which is not Miller's domain. And You are right - it is much more probable because Webber will get his and the same seams to be true for Mobley. Miller needs to shoot more - period.

Im with you there, Miller should shoot more regardless of where they come form and hopefully the team will realize that if they keep passing, lok for Brad, taking the good open shots they get them sleves theywill all get theirs.

Brad just passes up too many opportunities for a reason only known to himot

He is 6th in the NBA with 1.44 pts per shot.

Pedja and Mike have 1.30 pts per shot

Well the real thing with Brad is that he passes up OPEN shots. Lots of times you ask a guy to take more shots, but the extra shots you are asking him to take would not be as good/open as the ones he is already taking + his percentages would drop. But Brad...he's routinely passing up OPEN shots every bit as good as the ones he already takes, so I'm pretty sure he has room to shoot more without lowering his efficiency hardly at all.

Nonetheless, with the addition of Cat, SOMEBODY in that starting lineup is going to sacrifice some shots, and Brad seems like the most likely guy. If he could perhaps redirect that energy and get back to grabbing 10 rebs a game again like he did last year it would be all good in my book.

go brad

and i regret to say i actually agree with piksi...

i mean he's saying it like he can turn it on and off like that...if thats the case then turn it on when your team is down by a few buckets instead of passing up open shots...like Brick said...which by the way makes my blood boil

Brads performance last night was like the Brad of last season with Chris out...now i know Chris is back and has been absolutely ballin but Brad you still need to shoot more on a more consistent basis and DO NOT pass up open shots

I hate to be so critical of him (being his biggest fan and all..hehehe)...but sometimes its gotta be done

go Brad!!

Well heck four more offensive boards pretty much gaurentees four more shots right?

Why is every shot Miller takes a "good shot", but less Webber jumpers is good? I think they are very comparable with ability to hit that jumper. I think they both should shoot everytime they have that open shot in rhythm. Why is Brad a hero for shooting when he's open, but Webber is the goat?

i don't think Webber is a goat...i think if you are open shoot the ball

but i think with Brad he may have a higher shooting percentage...so he's a little bit more likely to be able to hit that high post jumper every time

but if you are open by all means SHOOT THE BALL!

Brad's a hero cause he hardly shoots them even when he's open at times? :D But that's Brad's bread & butter, making those jumpers. So I agree with iheartBrad, his percent of making it from there may be higher than Webb's. Not that I think Webb shouldn't shoot when he's open too.

I'm curious how different their percentages are. I know overall Brad's FG% is higher. Too bad there isn't a "18-20 ft open jumpshot %" stat. :) They are probably pretty close. In general, Webb does force things a little more which I think attributes to the lower FG%. As jumpshooters I think Brad is slightly better, but not by a lot.

Miller clearly shoots jump shots more accurately than Webber based on those numbers. This doesn't mean that if the roles were reversed in the offense the numbers would be the same, but there you go.

Ever seen Brad get a rebound, bringing the ball up stop at the top of the key and jack up a jumper with 20 sec on the shot clock and wothout any other teammate touching the ball ?
Brad Miller does not force his shots. Webber is going to take them no matter what or when.

That's BS.

That's because, offensively, Brad is can be very passive. He should take it upon himself to TAKE those open shots. It's not like he isn't getting those open looks, they are there all game long for him. For a guy who shoots such a good percentage, he sometimes seems to lack confidence in it, especially if he misses one or two. Of course, maybe he hears what the crowd does to Webber when he misses a couple in a row and doesn't want that to happen to him;)

Sure have not. Ever seen Brad throw a length of the court bounce pass with just the perfect spin right into Bibby's hands on the run? Ever seen Brad post someone up, spin, and throw it down with a reverse dunk? Ever seen Brad defend Tim Duncan with any level of success? This team needs Brad Miller and what he brings to the game (even with his flaws), and this team needs Webber and what he brings (even with his flaws). Some people like to only notice the good in their favorite players and the bad in others.

If You want to address my post - fine.

Do not get personal (moderators around here apperently work just in certain cases).

Then again - it is Your way to react when You run out of arguments.
