Kings' Newfound Physicallity

The Kings played with ferocity last night against the Clippers Nov 23. After years of watching players get out of the way and "wear tuxedos" in the paint, the Kings seem very willing to mix it up. Malone's style of play emphasizes rebounding and defense, but also intensity. Whether by design or an artifact of coaching, the Kings' physical play clearly bothered Griffin and Paul. Outlaw's flagrant was inadvertant, but set the tone. I really like to see Cousin's put his body on Griffin. Patterson and Thompson showed some physical play. JLM plays defense like a swarm of mosquitoes irritating the opponent.

For the Kings, chippiness and intense physical play may really help them. Cousins has gotten his emotions much better under control. Probably Shaq has a lot to do with it. Cousins has a need to express himself on the floor and is now much better able to do that within the confines of the rules. The scene at the end of the game where he stops IT from shaking hands is classic. Paul is walking around with his hand out. Cousins escorts IT off the floor and puts his arm around his shoulder. Those two guys believe in each other and are capable of leading a team to respectability. I was impressed with some of the words used Sun by sportscasters to describe the Clippers game. They said things like "the improving Kings." Do not underestimate the skill of Coach Malone and his understanding of the mental aspects of pro basketball.

Totally agree. It was most apparent from Outlaw and Patterson. Ppat was becoming a man 'possesed' out there. I don't mind the flagrant from Outlaw at all, because it confirms that he was changing his style of play and his mindset was.."I'm not going to give up an easy lay in". He "missed" in the way he went about it, but that's not the point. That may have been his first flagrant in his career...which then leads to the question, what inspired it?

A new coach, a new system, a rejuvinated passion for this game. Great stuff. This what we've been asking for, regardless of the current talent on the roster.

And this statement right here is probably the key to the change.."Do not underestimate the skill of Coach Malone and his understanding of the mental aspects of pro basketball." Our coach is sharing truth that makes sense with our guys and they're starting to show positive commitment to the change

ShastaKingsFan,
So far you are the only person on the forum that gets it. I think this thread has a lot to do with how much the Kings can improve.

Malone is a boss. Cousins is a beast. Its a shame that we're probably about 2-3 years from putting a good roster around those guys thanks to the mess left by GP and the Magoofs.

But when that time comes...

Oh trust me after YEARS of calling for hard nosed defense I LOVED what coach Malone was getting from the guys yesterday and I want to see more. I honestly think that finding a second scoring option in the starting 5 is not an issue IF we can play 48 min of physical defense and hold opponents to 90 or less. We are not there but yesterday was a good start.
