Kings' Miller breaks fibula

The center is expected to miss four to six weeks; he could be ready for the postseason.

Kings center Brad Miller had already missed six games with what was a surprisingly troublesome left calf contusion. Saturday afternoon he attempted a simple layup during a light shooting drill at the team's practice facility.

One layup later, Miller could miss the rest of the regular season, and the season in total, after learning he suffered a broken left fibula. Miller was taken to the UC Davis Medical Center, where tests revealed the fracture. He is in a walking cast.

Miller's latest injury is expected to take four to six weeks to heal. Then there is the unknown period of time for rehabilitation.

The Kings end the regular season April 20 at home against the Phoenix Suns. The NBA playoffs, which they hope to make, begin either April 23 or 24. Miller now will sit in the same proverbial boat with guard Bobby Jackson, whose return from surgery to repair the torn ligament in his left wrist is projected around the same weekend the playoffs start.

Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie said he had received the X-ray from Washington when Miller was originally injured, and an MRI taken last week at the medical center revealed no fracture.

"I was talking to (coach Rick) Adelman, and I sort of heard Brad yell," Petrie said. "We're going to activate Erik (Daniels) and go with what we've got."

Miller could not be reached for comment.

Should the Kings make the playoffs, the longer they can stay alive, the better the chances they will get back Jackson, Miller or both.

April 24 is six weeks from today's meeting with the hard-charging Houston Rockets at Arco Arena. Houston (36-25) trails the Kings (39-24) by two games for fifth place in the Western Conference, just one in the loss column. Like the Kings, the Rockets have won three straight.

Unlike the Kings, the Rockets will have 7-foot-6 center Yao Ming on the court today. Yao and the Rockets are coming off perhaps their season's most impressive victory, a 127-107 road decision Friday night over the Phoenix Suns.

And Yao may not have had a more complete game this season with 27 points, a career-high 22 rebounds and five blocked shots. Oh, yes, Tracy McGrady scored 38 points with nine rebounds and six assists to complete a nice dual threat.

As far as the Kings are concerned, at least, during a season of constant change, the team will experience no shock at the loss of another key player.

"They thought he was going to come back (today) or for the next game," Bibby said of Miller's anticipated return by the coaching staff. "We've been making up for him not being here. I mean, he's been out for six games already."

However, roles have changed and will continue to change.

Six-foot-nine Brian Skinner is listed as a forward-center, but until Miller's uncertain return, he can likely be considered a center only. In terms of playing time, the Feb. 23 trade that brought him, Corliss Williamson and Kenny Thomas from the Philadelphia 76ers for Chris Webber, Matt Barnes and Michael Bradley has taken Skinner from famine to feast. Skinner only once - Nov. 6 (30 minutes) - during nearly four months in Philadelphia played more than 18 minutes. Skinner has started all six games since Miller was sidelined, and his 26-minute outing in Friday night's 113-112 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers has been his shortest stint. The mothballs will be dusted off center Greg Ostertag.

It's now "Skinner Time"

Well, if Skinner is a hidden gold mine lets him start breaking into that big vane called "the last 19 games". He has fresh legs, is getting into running shape and is learning to pass (a four letter word in Philly!! :D ).

He has a mid-range jumper and is having the time of his life. BTW, when he walks off court is it my eyes or is he really taller than Pedja who is true 6-10? Kenny Thomas plays "big" then there is Big Lump (anyone remember him in the BC comic strip years ago?), our dear OTag. He has his place as long as we don't pass to him too much.

Then in a tough playoff game 1 with the Kings starting slow, B52 comes walking in from the tunnel, the home crowd goes nuts, there's not a dry eye in the place, and the Kings take 4 in a row from Dallas and and head for the conference Finals, the underdog, just like the Knicks against the mighty Lakers that time many years ago........

Maybe Philly will buy out Webbers contract since its not working there. And we Pick Webber up for around 2 or 3 mill the rest of the season. HA that would be some weird ****.

Yeah, I'm sure the Philly owners have an extra $50 or $60 mil around to buy Webb out with. ;)
