Kings Introduce Garcia to Sacramento

The Sacramento Kings introduced their newest player this afternoon, as Francisco Garcia paid his first visit to the Capital City after being drafted by the Kings on Tuesday.

"This is what I've been working for my whole life," Garcia told reporters.

Garcia is an early-entry junior from the University of Louisville. Basketball scouts tagged the 6-foot 7-inch tall Garcia as a strong long-ball shooting guard with passing skills. They reported he's a good roving defender, able to both steal and bat away the ball. The 23-year-old Garcia is originally from the Dominican Republic. Today he said Kings were his favorite team and the draft experience was "intense."

"After my name was called for my favorite team, it was great," Garcia said. "Now that I'm here and meeting everybody, I feel even better."

With the speculation that Kings guard Cuttino Mobley will become a free agent, Sacramento appears to be looking for another shooter to complement point guard Mike Bibby and small forward Peja Stojakovic.

"I think he fits in well. We're looking to obviously add some length to our team," said head coach Rick Adelman. "He's multi-position player. What I really like about is offensively he really helps his teammates be better."

Garcia said he learned to love the Kings while watching them play on television and playing for the team is a dream come true. "I used to love watching them play -- the way they pass the ball, the way they set screens and moving up the ball," Garcia said. "They run up and down the floor a lot. I kind of enjoy it."

He seems like a nice young man with good credentials. You know, though, just once I would love to hear a new guy to the Kings say:

"I've loved watching the Kings play. I know I'll be able to help where they need it the most because I really love playing defense."

...

...

...

Just once...

...sigh...

If we get Matt Barnes back we'll have two guys playing for their favorite team. Actually, I hope that all the Kings are playing for their favorite team! There's something reassuring in that.

Can't wait to see what the guy can do at the pro level. What worries me though is that he got completely shut down(4 points) in the Final 4 when he was guarded by Deron Williams. I really really hope he's gonna turn out good but i'm worried cause if he couldn't score on Deron. What is he gonna do against guys like Artest, McGrady, Bowen, Christie, Bryant and so on...

any of you worried about that or is it just me being paranoid?

1 bad game doesnt alarm me, seeing how he carried the Cards, he was thier leading scoring and assist man, maybe they had a good game plan for him.... but thats what people fail to see, he doesnt have to be the number 1 guy here , he can be the 4th, so he wont have that much pressure on him ... we already have Bibby, Peja and Miller...

Ok I admit it, it's my first post here...
OK I admit it, i'm a chick :)

I REALLY hope Kings do sth about the defense. That 140 points a game crap- can't happen again.

On the private note- please bring Vlade back!
Good luck, Garcia, let's see what u've got.

Good night, gentlemen ;)

Obviously I have been one of thsoe pointing those issues out. We will see. Due to our system, he should at least be able to convert on open looks off of ball movement, and with bigger/better offensive threats around, the defense should not be keyed on him. Might be able to score in the shadows while the shutdown guys conentrate on taking away Mike or Peja. But I doubt his ability to create against a good NBA defender, and hence my concern that he is just like every other King and unable to help us patch our weaknesses.

P.S. he was an ok scorer in college, but not prolific (15.7pts). It would be his passing that might be more impressive and useful to us in the end.

FG comes from one of the top college programs (Pitino), was instrumental in getting them to the final 4, is a really good student, IS a Reggie Miller type and has a really GREAT attitude. If he in fact can play some D and bulks up this summer..... WOW do I look forward to him..... and all of the BBall sports pundits are giving the Kings, a day or so later at least, a B+ or A- for their picking him.

Outside of being skinny and able to shoot, I find the Reggie Miller comparisons roughly as amusing as Peja/Bird comparisons.

If I actually had to pick an NBA player it might be a less athletic Brent Barry.

Press Conference from Kings.com

You come from a country (Dominican Republic) where baseball is a big deal...

Garcia: “I used to play basketball a lot with my uncle. I used to play baseball and basketball. I just fell in love with the sport. Once I got to New York I just played basketball. I was intense before the draft. After my name was called (by) my favorite team, it was great. Now that I’m here, meeting everybody, I’m feeling even better.”

“I used to love watching them (the Kings) play, the way they pass the ball, the way they set screens, move without the ball. I kind of like that kind of stuff. Going up and down the floor a lot. I kind of enjoy it.”

Why the number 32?

Garcia: “I don’t know. That’s the number I wore at Louisville. I like it.”

What was it like playing for Rick Pitino?

Garcia: “It was great. He showed me a lot of things. He was like a father to me. I talked to him yesterday and he was really excited for me. He said it was best team for me, because of the style they play. He’s happy for me. I thank him for all the things he did for me. He told me to keep doing same things I was doing at Louisville – keep working hard and stay humble and stay hungry.”

“My family worked hard to get me where I am now. I worked so hard. It feels really good.”

How good a defender do you think you can be in this league?

Garcia: “ As good defender as I can be. I’ll work hard at it everyday. It’ll be a learning experience for me. I’m going to work on that everyday until I get better and better. If that’s what they need me to do, that’s what I’ll do. I’ll work everyday and I’ll be a good defender.”

“My goal would be every time I step on the basketball court to give it my all. I just want to take it step by step. I don’t want to think about what’s in the future. I want to think about now, what I have to do now to get better and help my team.”

“The first thing I want to do is get in the weight room, just bulk up a little bit more. I know they need my defense, so I know I’m going to have to keep working on that.”

RICK ADELMAN

How well does he fit into what you want to do?
“Obviously he adds some length to our team. Offensively, he can pass the ball, handle it. Defensively, the guy has an attitude that he’s going to work hard and try to learn. As a team defender, he’s going to be good because that’s how Louisville plays. I just think that he just plays extremely hard, he’s played for a very good program. He’s going to have an opportunity to play here.”

“He gives it to you everyday. Basketball-wise, like I said if you have another ball-handler, passer, he can to that. He’s a rookie – but it’s there. Our system’s good for him. I hope he’ll learn quickly. We’ll get the opportunity to see what he can do and we’ll take it from there.”

“He should step in and help you, not knowing what’s going to happen over the summer. We have a young piece, but we have a piece that’s going to be a good player in this league. His experience playing three years in a school like that certainly sets him apart .”

Garcia is a gifted passer/playmaker. That is what I like most about his game. With the defense keying in on Mike he should get a lot of open looks.

I'm starting to feel good about this young man, what does everyone look so unhappy in the pictures? This is supposed to be a good thing.
