Kings interested in Russian guard Dmitry Kulagin (Yahoo)

I wasn't following VTB league this year as no israeli players were playing there this time, but while this is strong league by European standards, "Triumph" is not one of best teams there (it was eliminated easily on 1/4 finals) and 7.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 2.3 apg is not very impressive in this case.
Also, Kulagin was very fringe player averaging only 2.7 ppg for Russian NT which was very weak in this Euro Qual. tournament (they will probably qualify after 72-68 win over Italy , but in process they even lost to Switzerland!).
As israeli I'm not neutral, but in this forum I don't see much support for signing Casspi which was leading with 19.0 ppg our team which played pretty well, so I don't see why to support such strange move as bringing player which didn't succeded even in middle tier VTB team and Russian NT.
Also, it seems that it's not about "not afraid to mix it up" but more about "having problematic character" as he was ejected in one of Euro Qual. games after punching opponent.

Don't read too much into responses to any of the threads here. Most Kings fans are very familiar with Casspi. So what he brings is understood.

Now this relatively unknown Russian with spiked up hair peaks our interest. Sometimes a player needs to be seen with NBA talent around him to appreciate how his skills will translate. There is an upside for a 6' 6" 22 yo guard who can handle the ball:)

The Sacramento Kings got a first-hand look at Dmitry Kulagin at this year’s Adidas Eurocamp in Treviso, Italy.
Prior to the 2014 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings front office made the trip to Italy to scout the annual international showcase. Kulagin was among the participants this summer, having last played in the 2012 Eurocamp.
Brett Pollakof of NBC Sports’ Pro Basketball Talk was there and had this assessment of Kulagin: “His activity on both ends of the floor was immediately noticeable, and he was in attack mode from the moment he stepped on the court. Kulagin finished 6-of-10 from the field in his two games combined, and his athleticism and effort was a joy to watch.”

I thought Kublai Kahn was a singer?

Ooops sorry that was Shaka

Maybe a geneticly enhanced basketball Warrior that traveled back from the future?

Kirk: "Kaaaaaaaahhhhhnnnn!!!!"

Aha! Jokes on you with Google translate :)

At any rate, I'll just copy my response from our other minor moves thread. Likely doesn't do a single thing for our roster, but doesn't hurt to bring him in and compete in training camp to see what he's got. The more of these sort of warm bodies we bring in, the better chance we have at one hitting and finding a rotational player on the cheap.

I will say with Omri, Sim and flirting with this Russian Sensation that the Kings bench is taking on an international air.

As far as the OP it looks like Dmitry wants guaranteed playing time: http://chernykh.wordpress.com/

What is Pete supposed to do? "You see Mike we promised Kulagin playing time so he has to be in your rotation?"

Dmitry, we love you man. But the truth is this. Come to training camp and earn your spot on the team. If you are good enough and work hard enough there are minutes for you in the NBA. Otherwise stay in Europe and "develop".

Don't be a spoilsport. I even investigated authentic Kazakhstanian names!
Your plot was obvious to anyone after you wrote "aitmukhambetov" instead of "aitmukhametov". And Kublai Khan in Kazakhstan, really? His kin was bitterly hated west of Mongolia!

almost forgot :p

this new regime is nothing if not thorough. of course, chasing every player who will never rank any higher than 12-15 on the depth chart doesn't have even the tiniest fraction of the impact that cementing players 1-8 tends to have on the win/loss column. personally, i'm just assuming that there is no "epic move" coming this offseason; it's already september, after all. nik stauskas and darren collison seem to be the major acquisitions of the summer. thus kings fans get to cling to mid-season trade hopes once again...

Well Even if Kings like this guy, are they really going to guarantee they will take minutes away from RayMac, I don't think so
Plus I think there has to be some sort of buyout paid?

I have no problem with the buyout, a 1 mil guar contract cause Im sure he wont come as a training camp invite.
If they feel he is that much better than Deonte Burton then I am ok with that.
And having a third PG on the roster is important.
But guarantee of rotation minutes? Hell no , you got to prove in practice you deserve minutes, that's the same
with pretty much everyone on the second/third string.

His agent should sit him down with a bunch of film on RayMac
and tell him " If you are sure you can take RayMac's minutes
based on your offense AND DEFENSE then go ahead take
the contract and earn your minutes"

Therefore I guess it's OK to approve PDA's vacation request for the rest of September. Brick, we don't have to watch the wire anymore or until after opening tip-off.

Everyday i come here wanting to see/read something cool about Kings FO making a big trade/signing , everyday i'm a little more disappointed:(

Even better would be for Dmitry to visit Sacramento and work out with the guys. A handful of scrimmages could help all parties make decisions and Dmitry gets a free trip to the USA to do what he loves to do:)

Dmitry Kulagin: 'NBA is my goal, it is the reason why I play basketball. And I am sure that sooner or later I will end up there. Right now agents are in talks with Sacramento about my role on the team. It is a matter of principle for me what the final offer will be like. If I get guaranteed playing time, I will take the offer. But to go to the NBA and be a benchwarmer there – I don’t see a reason to do it. I don’t want just to make it to the league, I want to play there. I don’t rule out that in order to better prepare myself I will have to stay in Europe for some time longer.'

Q&A with his agent:

What is the possibility of Kulagin signing with the Kings this autumn?

'It’s 50/50. It all depends on Dima himself. He has to choose what he prefers: to play a decisive role on a strong European team or to fight for becoming one of the main players on an NBA team.'

When will it become clear?

'I think, before the end of this week.'

If that is truly his attitude, he can stay in Europe AFAIC. We just got rid of someone who too often put his own game and ego first. Sorry, Dmitry. You don't get guaranteed time on an NBA team. You fight for it and earn it.
