Kings getting ready to apply for relocation again?

I'm pretty sure they're going to apply for relocation this year, it's just where they're going that hasn't been decided. The amount of bridges that George Maloof burned in Sacramento last year make it inevitable. I'm also pretty sure they would have applied for relocation last year if they hadn't gotten strong signals (to the tune of David Stern openly mocking them in his press conference) that it would be voted down. The Virginia Beach deal sounds like a long shot, who knows what else is brewing. If recent history s any indication though, I would be shocked if this group of people manages to put together a plan coherent enough to impress the NBA Board of Governors within 4 years time, much less 4 months.

KG4 said she heard him on a local sports show today - it wasn't CD but I don't know who it was - and that Lukenbill was upbeat and positive, talking about doing things to keep the Kings in Sacramento. I'll try and find out what show he was on.

Yeah, I understand that. I think they're scrambling to put the numbers in place right now on multiple fronts, this Virginia Beach plan is just the one we know about. If they had a plan in place they'd be gone already. You're right though that if their plan A involves goading some as-yet-determined state into bankrolling their business with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of taxpayer money, they're probably staying put whether they like it or not. If Virginia is stupid enough to make that deal, there's nothing we can do about it, but I'd put the odds of that happening at 5%. Maybe 20 years ago you can sweep that under the rug, politicians get paid, people buy jerseys and everyone forgets about it, but not anymore. Not with the way news is disseminated this century.

Filing for relocation is close to the last step of the process. Basically VB has to line up all their local and state funding. Comcast has to negotiate with George on all things revenue when it comes to the lease. These deals have to be more or less final. The relocation committee has to review all of the agreements and debate the situation to decide if relocation is the best solution. If there is no firm deal, there will be no filing.

Yes it all comes down to a vote. But keep in mind that part of the reason Anaheim didn't fly was because their deal had some very serious questions that were not settled. Also recall that the Maloofs had to pull back their request - it was not voted down. Probably at the strong urging of the committee. So it might be a good assumption that if it goes to a vote, it's a foregone conclusion they move.

Side note on VB. I watched their meeting live on the web. They have a couple of council members none to thrilled with some of the reports they have been provided. The hotel tax was a blind side for most as well. And yes the 42 million for the Maloofs after relocation and moving costs was questioned. They might be able to wrangle their own house to get funding, but I think they have a tough battle trying to get the state to bail out the Maloofs. Bottom line is the tough scrutiny hasn't even begun for them.

Yeah, I think that's it. No wonder he sounded so upbeat and optimistic. I couldn't figure out how Lukenbill would have come back into the picture.

I don't think VB is going to have anything nailed down in time for a relocation request this year. Frankly, I'd be surprised if the league woudl approve such a move at all. They'd surely rather see a sale to Hansen in Seattle first, if Sacramento was still not an option. However, with at least one serious buyer for a team to stay in Sacramento and build a new arena, I'm still seeing a good chance for the Maloofs to be forced to sell and sell to a Sacramento buyer.

I hope it goes to a vote because when the state of VA turns down that terrible deal for it's citizens I want to see where that leaves the Maloofs. That deal puts all of the onus on the citizens and in deals that size the risk it way too great from one side to take. I can't even see the NBA being OK with an arena deal that involves ZERO funding from the ownership. The NBA's model has always been public/private share of the burden. If the deal goes through and the city of VA Beach goes belly up the NBA will look bad, very bad.

It appears to me that VB is nothing more than pie in the sky. No money has been approved by anyone. The city of VB or the state of Virginia. Good luck with that. Seattle can be appeased by telling them that they'll get a team through expansion, which would be a hell of lot cheaper than blowing the budget trying to buy the Kings from the Maloofs. Until I have a reason to think otherwise, I'm still putting my money behind the Kings staying in sacramento, and with new ownership. The only thing that could change that is Joe and Gavin parting ways with George, and finding a way to re-enter the arena deal. Doesn't seem likely right now.
