Kings Future Outlook Against Divison Rivals

#1
Right now, the Kings are the worst team in the league, period. But in a few years we should be vying for the top team in our division, probably against the Lakers. I believe the Lakers will still be a very good team in 2-4 years. Besides them, I don't think we would have much competition. There is the Suns, who are a complete mess with Amare Stoudamire as pretty much the only piece for the future. The Warriors aren't a very well run organization and lack any frontcourt or defense. The Clippers might be in an even bigger mess than the Suns with some high paid veteran players that aren't leading the team to where they thought they could be.

So where do you guys think the Kings will stand in our division in the next few years? What team will be our biggest rival?

Well..

Lakers - Will be top notch for next few years
Suns - are fading fast
Warriors - average at best
Clippers - >> Clippers...
Kings - Rebuilding slowly

If our rebuild is successful, we could be 2nd place soon or at least fighting for it.

This is easily one of the worst divisions in the NBA.

Our biggest rivals will be the Maloofs, GP, and their stupid decisions.
You know, at some point the ridiculous dumping on the Maloofs just needs to stop. If it weren't for the Maloofs, we wouldn't even have the Kings and we certainly wouldn't have had the years of THE TEAM. They're the ones that opened their wallets and spent big bucks to try and get us a championship.

This ignorant idea that it's cool to constantly berate them is embarrassing. Kings fans owe the Maloofs and Geoff Petrie a debt of gratitude. We may not always agree with their decisions and we have a lot of fun arguing about why they did something, even though we have no way of knowing all the facts that went into a decision.

You may not agree with what they've done or how they've done it, but I was a Kings fan before the Maloofs came along and I wouldn't return to those days for all the money in the world.

Now, about the topic at hand:

I think our biggest concerns will always be the Lakers. Other teams may rise and fall, but the main team from LA has the prestige, the titles, and the lure to keep them in the hunt every year.

Well when you are at the very bottom, there is nowhere else to go but up. So yeah, I'm thinking we'll get better - how soon I do not know.

I'm a fan through thick and thin, and right now we are scrapping for table slops. Reminds me of my crazy Anorexia days.

I don't mind staying where we are, we have a great chance at Lottery right now. But with the Kings luck... anyway, I don't need to say anymore.

I disagree with the punching bag of the Maloofs and their GP. They have brought some awesome years to us, and great memories. For that I am forever grateful.

Terrible things the Maloofs have done to merit their treatment on this board:
1. Paid off the refs to screw us in the infamous Game 6.
2. Refused to re-sign Chris Webber to a max deal when we were inches away from a championship.
3. Moved the Kings to Las Vegas, depriving Sacramento of its only major sports team.
4. Appeared in a Carl's Jr. commercial.

I only mention the very mild #4 because the first three things didn't actually happen.

Bashing the Maloof's and GP shows terrible ignorance as to what they have done for Sacramento as a team and a City. Pardon me if I repeat what others have said:

1) If not for the Maloof's the Kings would have been out of here and never would have gotten within a freethrow of the NBA finals.

2) If not for the fantastic work done by GP since 1996 we could never have came that close to the Gold Ring. That's why GP was voted by the league as Executive of the Year.......TWICE!!!

3) If you doubt the Kings situation, read 1) and 2) again and go back and look at the multiple 50 game and one 62 game winning seasons in the 99-04 time period based on the teams GP built.

I bash the Maloofs and GP all the time...because they ABSOLUTELY deserve it. The franchise as you see it today is 100% their doing, and the various excuses for how its not and living in the now distant past (hey, last century they made good moves!) is what is ridiculous.

But I bash them for their basketball acumen, or lack thereof. For their vomitous marketing department, their idiotic struggles to stay #8 baby!, their complete lack of appreciation and loyalty to the players, and yes it was the players, who put us on the map, their complete lack of understanding of the life cycle of an NBA team, for dumping Webber for "flexible contracts", canning Adelman because he wouldn't kiss thier butt, gold lame uniforms and giant cheesy gold #6s out on the front lawn, assuming we are idiots (or being idiots themselves) and forcing soft players down our throat marketed as saviors, favoring style over substance, pet college systems over results, pretty boy scoring over winners. We have met the enemy, and he is us. And this is relevant to this thread because the biggest hurdle the Kings have to overcome going forward is a complete change in their mentality. The Maloofs and GP created this mess by being idiots, they will only ge out of it by ceasing to be so (and the ray of sunlight is that there are signs that they may be turning the corner -- that they may have been humbled and are learning).

Now what I do not bash them for is that they are still there. After everything that has happened, all the insults, failed votes, being dragged through the mud, they are still trying to stay in the community. They do not get nearly enough credit for that, and people do not realize how lucky they are that they are not cold hearted businessmen, or they would have already left town. And they want to win. And again people confuse incompetence with lack of desire. They desperately want to win, too much actually for rational thought in many cases in the past. Unfortunately they do not get it, or have not gotten it, and while they have wanted to win, they are some of the last people in the world who should have been making decisions on how to do so. They are the enemy. they have screwd themselves over, and us in the process. But they still want to win, and going forward that might be as big as advantage as any over the meddling ownership messes in Golden State, Phoenix and Clipperland. The Lakers will always come back like a toenail fungus, but the other three teams are being visibly hamstrung by their front offices/GMs in a way that is hopefully past for us. I see nothing at all preventing us from being back in the mix 5 years now except the stupid mentality that got us into this mess in the first place. I see all kinds of things potentially holding back the teams in GS, LAC and PHX, namely meddlesome, cheap owners, and weak overmatched GMs.

I wouldn't bet on that even if the odds were 20 to 1.
Me either, I don't see the Lakers collapsing right away, nor do I think that the Suns are unavoidably doomed. In a couple of years, we have a good shot at #3 in the Pacific, but that only means being better than the Warriors or Clips, so we could be #3 and still be a lottery team. If the Suns implode, we could be #2 and still be a lottery team. Barring unforeseen changes, teams from other WC divisions, like Portland, will still be kicking our butts and keeping us out of the playoffs.

In short - I don't think #1 in the Pacific will be happening, and there's no reason to care who is #2 in a division. Conference, yes. Division, no.
