Kings coaching list

According to FOX 40's Jim Crandell, the Kings have between 8-12 possible candidates to interview. He didn't give any names except to say Geoff Petrie will take charge and the Maloofs will not get in the way.

According to the Chicago Tribune:

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune...2501057.column?page=2&coll=cs-bulls-headlines

Former Bulls head coach Bill Cartwright and ex-assistant Scott Brooks are leading up the Kings' coaching search. … Nets President Rod Thorn admitted last week in an interview he was close to trading Jason Kidd to the Lakers in February, but the Lakers wouldn't give up Andrew Bynum. They will now. …

According to the Los Angeles Times:

http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-lakers15may15,0,2379920.story?coll=la-home-sports

The Seattle SuperSonics and Sacramento Kings have received permission from the Lakers to interview assistant coach Kurt Rambis for their head coaching jobs, a league source said.

Lakers assistant coaches Brian Shaw and Jim Cleamons are also being interviewed for head coach positions, Shaw by Indiana and Sacramento, and Cleamons by Seattle.

====================

So, if the Kings have 8-12 on their list and if what is being reported is true by the above sources, the list would look like this so far:

1. Bill Cartwright

2. Scott Brooks

3. Kurt Rambis

4. Brian Shaw

I hope the word about the Lakers being open to trading Bynum is true and the Kings can deal for him.

Good news on Shaw. Isn't cartwright a triangle guy?

So for some reason every assistant, film guy, and waterboy on the first round and out Lakers is getting interviewed to be a head coach?

Given the nature of that list (assistants/relatively inexperienced guys, but guys with NBA coaching experience), I would imagine that:

5. Iavaroni
6. Porter

Are also safe bets to be in the 8-12.

I would guess that SVG and Carlisle are also there, although that would not have to be.

According to Grant Napear this afternoon, add these names to Petrie's list:

Tom Thibodeau (Houston Rockets assistant coach)

Stan Van Gundy

Terry Porter

Marc Iavaroni

Reggie Theus*

Petrie will interview everyone by himself in the first round. After that, the Maloofs will want to meet with the candidates that Petrie selected for the next round of interviews.

*Just wanted to add that Theus did sign a new deal with New Mexico State.

http://msn.foxsports.com/cbk/story/6797460

He added: "I wouldn't tell NBA teams to go away if they called. I would listen and talk to all of them because I think I owe them that respect."

The new contract provides a financial package worth $466,000 per season and includes bonus opportunities. It also provides a continuation of the five-year roll over term and a buyout clause of two times Theus' base salary if he leaves for another position in the next two years.

How can we interview Iavaroni and Porter while they're still in the POs.

I don't think there's a time limit on interviews. In fact, I believe Petrie said it will take as long as it takes, whether it's a week or six weeks.

If this is the list, its a solid one full of younger guys, but guys with a lot of NBA experience:

1. Bill Cartwright

2. Scott Brooks

3. Kurt Rambis

4. Brian Shaw

5. Marc Iavaroni

6. Terry Porter

7. Tom Thibodeau (Houston Rockets assistant coach)

8. Stan Van Gundy

9. Reggie Theus

Most of the names you would hope would be on there. No Carlisle is a bit of a surprise, but that may be a technicality because of the Artest situatin -- coould not hire him unless Ron leaves. Only one experimental college coach, and even he an ex NBAer.

If Rick Carlisle isn't on there, it could also be because he's way too similar in style to the recently dismissed Musselman.

I'm not a big Rambis fan (as a head coach). I like the guy and I think he has a lot of good qualities, but he really hasn't shown me anything as a head coach.

Well, so far as I know he hasn't been a head guy in 10 years, and that originally was just a short stint early in his coaching career. May have learned a thing or two in the intervening decade (not that a guy wiht a career 24-13 record was doing too TOO bad).

besides: No Rambis no rings baby! :D

Okay, someone help me out here. Why do I keep thinking of Ghostbusters whenever Kurt Rambis' name comes up?????

Add another name to the list: Chuck Person (Indiana assistant coach)

Kings get permission to interview three assistant coaches
By Sam Amick - Bee Staff Writer

If the early stages of the Kings' coaching search are any indication, they may be looking for a 40-something assistant coach with a background as an NBA player.

That's the similarity between Indiana assistant Chuck Person and Lakers assistants Brian Shaw and Kurt Rambis, all of whom are of interest to the Kings.

A Lakers spokesman confirmed that the Kings have requested and received permission to speak to Shaw, 41, and Rambis, 49, while a Pacers spokesman said the Kings have also been granted permission to speak with Person, 42. Kings assistant Scott Brooks, 41, is also a candidate and a former NBA player. Former coach Eric Musselman fit the age profile but never played professionally.

According to Kings co-owner Gavin Maloof, the team has yet to conduct any formal interviews. The search is being run almost entirely by basketball president Geoff Petrie, who met with the Maloofs in Las Vegas last week.

"(He) just calls us up and keeps us up to date," Gavin Maloof said from Las Vegas. "He's really out in front of the search. ... There's a lot of talent, a lot of good coaches. But of course there's several teams looking and a good coach is hard to find, but we believe there's a lot of talent out there. ... We shouldn't have a problem finding a good quality person."

Hey, I just think any list which includes BOTH Marc Iavaoni and Kurt Rambis, two of the ultimate working class heroes of the 80's and sources of endless standing jokes around my house growing up, is just excellent. :D

So now:

1. Bill Cartwright

2. Scott Brooks

3. Kurt Rambis

4. Brian Shaw

5. Marc Iavaroni

6. Terry Porter

7. Tom Thibodeau (Houston Rockets assistant coach)

8. Stan Van Gundy

9. Reggie Theus

10: Chuck Person (who would instantly be our best trash talker and an easy candidate to lead the league in Ts as a coach. :p )

Almost TOO MUCH due diligence at a certain point. Much better than the procedure last year, but many of these guys are not unknown entitites. nto like a normal job where you interview a bunch of complete strangers and have to make calls off of the interview. With the majority of these guys, the very LAST thing that should matter is the interview, and at some point you should have some clue of what you are lopoking for going in. No harm I suppose, and infinitely better than the alternative, but we are moving beyond "targeted search" here at some point and headed toward "throw stuff on the wall and hope something sticks".

Petrie schedules six interviews for Kings vacant coaching job
By Sam Amick - Bee Staff Writer
Last Updated 6:58 pm PDT Tuesday, May 15, 2007

Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie confirmed Tuesday afternoon that he will interview six candidates for the team's vacant coaching position beginning later this week.

Petrie said he plans to sit down with former Kings point guard and current New Mexico State coach Reggie Theus, former Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy and former Kings assistant coach Elston Turner.

The Kings have also asked and received permission to talk with three current assistant coaches - Houston's Tom Thibodeau and the Lakers' Brian Shaw and Kurt Rambis. Petrie said he's also received permission to talk with Indiana Pacers assistant Chuck Person, but has not scheduled an interview.

Each coaching candidate fit an early profile: All men are in their 40s and -- except for Van Gundy -- have played in the NBA.

Kings assistant Scott Brooks, has yet to have a formal interview, is also a candidate and a former NBA player. Former coach Eric Musselman fit the age profile but never played professionally.

Of the early candidates, Van Gundy and Rambis are the only ones with NBA head coaching experience. Van Gundy coached the Heat from 2003 to 2005 before resigning to spend time with his family.

Rambis, who played briefly with the Kings toward the end of his playing career, coached the Lakers in 1999 during the shortened lockout season and compiled a record of 24-13 before being eliminated in the Western Conference semifinals. He moved to the Lakers bench when Phil Jackson hired in his first term in Los Angeles.

According to Kings co-owner Gavin Maloof, the search is being run almost entirely by Petrie, who met with the Maloofs in Las Vegas last week.

"(He) just calls us up and keeps us up to date," Gavin Maloof said from Las Vegas. "He's really out in front of the search. ... There's a lot of talent, a lot of good coaches. Interesting that Mario Elie is not on the list considering he was given a very hard look last year...they must not have liked what they saw, or at least GP didn't.

Grant said today that some others would be added later. This is just the first round of interviews.

I'm really encouraged that Van Gundy is all scheduled and ready to go. Can't say that I ever believed that "time off with the family" would last much more than a year, but this makes it official.

I'm still down with a defensive focus inspite of where people think the league is going. I hope the team don't just kick the idea because of this last season.

I'm not down on the idea of strong defense, but I have come to the conclusion that, no matter who is coaching, we only have 4 decent defenders on the team, and that number is likely to be lower by the time the season starts. So in the short term, I don't think a defensively-oriented coach would be very helpful. I'd be happy to see a balanced approach, so at least we'll score some points while we shop for defenders.

Are they interviewing John Whisnit (sp?, former Monarchs coach)? Or did they burn that bridge? I just assume they would since he seemed so close to getting the job last year.

As soon as Jeff Van Gundy leaves the Rockets I would assume that we will hear murmurs of him being interviewed too.

My prefered choice would be:

1. Kurt Rambis - Sat at the feet of Phil Jackson and Pat Riley. Did not do well as a head coach, because the Lakers were a mess at that time. That was 8 years ago.

2. Terry Porter - Did well under the circumstances in Milwaukee. Learned offense from Rick Adelman. Plus was a hard nosed defender as a player.
