Kings can count on energetic Songaila

Kings forward Darius Songaila is a given, which makes him a coach's delight.

Rick Adelman knows the second-year pro from Lithuania will give his all every game. Adelman normally uses Songaila at his natural position, power forward. But with Brad Miller out because of a fractured left fibula, Songaila has spelled starting center Brian Skinner.

Never mind that 6-foot-10 Peja Stojakovic says Songaila, listed at 6-9, really is about 6-7.

"You pretty much know what Darius is going to do every night," Adelman said. "He's going to make open shots. He's just one of those guys (opponents) have to worry about all the time he's on the floor because he's going to bust his tail.

"The only thing he does consistently you don't like is he picks up cheap fouls. He reaches too much, and he gets himself in foul trouble. But he's such a solid player, and you can use him in so many spots. He's perfect for the way we play."

Songaila usually is right in the middle of the action. But that has a downside: At least at this stage of his NBA career, referees seem to point to him when they are unsure of whom to give a foul.

The only time mild-mannered Songaila really seems to become peeved is when he is called for a foul he doesn't believe he deserves. Ask what gets him heated, and he has to think hard.

"Not a lot," Songaila said. "On the basketball court, pretty much the same thing that gets everybody else worked up, the calls and things like that. One cheap shot will not do it. ... repetitive (ones), yeah."

Off the court, where there are no officials, it will take a lot more to rile up Songaila.

"On the court, I'm not going to let anybody push me around," he said. "Off the court, it's going to take me a lot to get worked up."

Songaila had to go back awhile to remember the last time he was fighting mad.

"I'd have to say it was my freshman year in college," said Songaila, who met his wife, Jacquelyn, while they attended Wake Forest. "It was actually a funny story. Jackie and me had just started dating, and she told her mom she was dating this basketball player.

"She told her to turn on the TV and look. He's No. 25. And we were playing Virginia Tech. I was going up for a rebound, and the guy just bear-hugged me. And he was about 6-5, not a big guy. So I picked him up and slung him down on the floor.

"Her mom said, 'Oh, no. He's a wild guy.' "

Adelman hopes Songaila can make an impression on Dallas star Dirk Nowitzki should the Kings and Mavericks meet again in the playoffs starting next weekend. Counting his international experience, Songaila has seen as much of Nowitzki as anyone.

"Darius is used to playing him," Adelman said. "He's comfortable playing him. He's done it a lot. He knows he doesn't leave him. He had that experience last year, and if we play Dallas, Darius is going to be huge. And not only with Nowitzki but with (Keith) Van Horn."

Stojakovic marvels at Son-gaila's hustle.

"The way he plays, you would never think he is so quiet," Stojakovic said of Songaila, the Kings' third-leading offensive rebounder this season with 120 despite averaging just 20.6 minutes. "His personality is so calm and laid-back, but he plays so hard. He brings a lot of energy. He plays tough. "He's an undersized big guy. He's going to push and set screens and get offensive boards. Most of the points he scores are off those putbacks, and having a guy, what, 6-7, get offensive boards is pretty amazing."

I would have guessed a shortish 6'8", but interesting to hear a King acknowledge that Darius has been somewhat inflated in the media guide.

Songalia was a huge pickup 2 years ago in the draft through trades. He brings us a lot of energy , hustle , and also good mid range shooting. I think he will be the x-factor along with house in the playoffs.

Let us assume this is the starting lineup for next year , we still have a darn good team .

miller/skinner/tag
thomas/song
peja/c-will
mobley/evans/martin
bibby/bobby/house

This is a deep team , people outside of the sacto and kings'fan realm have no idea about the importance of miller to kings offense . He is the best shooting center in the league , he can even hit three's if we need him .lol . Hopefully we can resign mobley and sign peja for a long term deal .

IF we don't win this year due to injuries to 2 key players, i am sure we willl have a GREAT chance next year with full health and a year of gelling for this "new " team. "Knock on wood..."

No defense. No rebounding. Too small.

There is more to the game than shooting + looking pretty. Its a potent offensive crew, but when has that EVER been enough by itself?

who do you think we should go after this offseason for adding some physical bodies down low in the post?

Well, I don't want to totally hijack a Darius thread with offseason talk again, but there are a LOT of big (as in "Big") free agents coming out this summer (Swift, Chandler, Gadzuric, Brown, Evans, Big Z etc. etc.) and of course trade possibilities are infinite.

Hahaa good ideas, good players. We gotta keep this a songalia thread , not a topic that induces offseason talk in the playoff madness.

So Apparently Darius is not a Hokie fan. :) I guess I'll let that slide.

"The way he plays, you would never think he is so quiet,"

That IS Darius Songaila...he easily has the most quietest points and rebounds on the whole team...I know on Sunday Al mentioned Kenny he definetly is pretty quiet when it comes to getting rebounds and perhaps getting a trible double...but I still think Darius does everything much quieter..

Neptune gettin it done!

GO Darius keep up the good work!!!

Great article! I'm so glad we have a player like Darius in our team!!! Keep up the good work, Darius!!!

In my own opinion I never paid much attention to Darius, he had some nights where he got good numbers and some where he barely played, but this is the first article I've read that gave a tiny peek into his personality. To me he didn't seem to have that same charisma as Bobby, Brad, or Webb but he is slowly growing on me as a player who can be counted on to go out on the court and give you his best no matter what. Keep it up D-Song!

Isn't his contract up by the end of this season. I really hope we can sign him again. He may not be the best player on this team but he is one guy that I would never want to lose. He's the perfect roleplayer.

He has a player's option. And I totally agree with ya!

Well, I'm glad Darius...or this article made you notice him! ;) Darius is a quiet player that just does what he needs to do. I like those kind of players more than superstar players.

Oh, never mind. We resigned him last year. Gave him two years, second year his option.

:D

I'm thinking he's gonna exercise the option and stay ... ;)

He's a good fit for our team and you certainly can't fault his hustle.

Just put in high heels like the ones Shaq wears. He'll easily be 6'9" then.

First off, I hope very much that Darius excercises his option but I would seriously doubt it if I were him. He is worth 4-5 million a year. Some team would sign him for that.

Yes but with every person you list there are serious draw backs in other areas. One dimensional, stone hands, unathletic, etc. But hey maybe thats what we need. I would love to see Tyson Chandler in a Kings uniform!! Lets just hope that Adelman and co. wouldn't try to develop his offensive game, because they would have better luck finding Jimmy Hoffa. :D

I really love what Song has given us - you all have spelled it out already.
We got really lucky that he went to Wake - I think it goes to show that NBA GM's fall in love with a lot of Euros cause of the mystery. The scout will find a prospect and tell the GM "he's 7-feet tall, is really mobile and can shoot," and that kid will get drafted despite no one seeing what he can do in a game situation, just as with a high schooler.
Darius, meanwhile, came to the US, busted his rear at Wake, put together a great college career, and he was still really undervalued in the draft. Had he stayed in Lithuania, he might have been drafted 10th overall based on the mystery factor. Then again, he might not have been drafted at all cause he doesn't fit the standard Euro mold and wouldn't have caught a scout's eye. Either way, the only reason he wound up in our range is cause he went to a U.S. school.

Darius is a system guy! He could probably only play for a handful of teams in the league. Sac is a perfect fit for his game. He should stay here As Long As Possible!
I disagree. He could fit in anywhere - hustle, grab some boards, hit a few open J's and give the starting PF a break. That's not really a system thing.

I know what would be a good trade a resigned Big Z for resigned Cat and Tag. All we need then a SG with MLE

Yeah those players have done wonders for their respective teams. How many times are you going to bring up the fact that our Front Court is not that tall. We had Vlade and Webber and Miller. They did not win a championship. Hell Dallas has had Dirk, Bradley, Lafrentz, and they didn't win a championship. Memphis has the much talked aobut Swift and Gasol and lorenzen woods. yet they have no ring as well. So maybe just maybe you sir are going down the wrong pat. don't ASSUME that just because your 2 or 3 inches shorter than your opponent that you are going to get outmaned.

You say our current lineup is to small has no defense ect..ect.. does this mean you are giving us 0 chance to win anything this year??? if so then why in the hell are we even watching.

Good read... I love his energy and hustle, and I love watching him out on the court (save for the cheap fouls, I guess). Love him! I hope he stays a King.

You know, being a fan does not actually REQUIRE jamming your head in the sand and sticking your fingers in your ears. But here, let's deconstruct this silliness:

1) Yeah those players have done wonders for their respective teams.
-- those teams as a rule have a fraction of our team's overall talent. We have a specific need, a specific weakness, that NEEDS to be corrected. The player or players who correct it do not need to be superstars carrying their team. They need to have the traits (size/length/athleticism/defense/intimidation) that we lack. Doug Christie played for a lot of terrible teams up in Toronto. But he was the perfect fit for what we needed and along with Bobby helped bounce us from a 45 win team to a 55 win team.

2) How many times are you going to bring up the fact that our Front Court is not that tall.
-- our frontcourt is not "not that tall". It is short. Painfully so. Which is fine on defense if the short guy is Ben Wallace. But we're short, and we play shorter. Here's a fun stat -- Mike Bibby, our PG, blocks more shots (0.38) than Peja (0.18) Darius (0.21) or Corliss (0.08), and nearly as many as KT (0.45) (in fact Cat DOES block more shots (0.54) than any of our PFs). Gee, wonder why everyone sees a red carpet right throught the paint?

3) We had Vlade and Webber and Miller. They did not win a championship.
-- now that's a silly point since we were quite obviously one of the true elite teams of the new millenium based at our peak in precisely our combination of the always potent offense WITH size and defense. Now if you are talking about last year's team let's see, Brad is part of the interior defensive problme, Vlade's legs were shot, and Webb was struggling to recover from a devastating knee injury. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see what happened.

4) Hell Dallas has had Dirk, Bradley, Lafrentz, and they didn't win a championship.
-- and now we are getting desperate. You will note I did not mention trading for Dirk or Bradley or LaFrentz to solve our interior problems. I mentioend a few of the physical forces that will out there this summer.

5) Memphis has the much talked aobut Swift and Gasol and lorenzen woods. yet they have no ring as well.
-- and obviously that is because of their defense???? Duh. Memphis is twice the defensive squad we are. They have that part right. What they lack of course is star power and the ability to score. One dimensional teams rarely win no matter the dimension (defense having a better shot at it than offense).

6) don't ASSUME that just because your 2 or 3 inches shorter than your opponent that you are going to get outmaned.
-- I don't have to assume -- I have seen it with my own eyes. As have we all, assuming the eyes have been open. We are Dallas right now. That's a slur. Our big hope is that we can just outscore the other team every game out.

7) You say our current lineup is to small has no defense ect..ect.. does this mean you are giving us 0 chance to win anything this year??? if so then why in the hell are we even watching.
-- I've seen this argument raised several times now, and I'm not sure it says what the people making it think it says. Because I for one would (and will) still be watching. Which makes which of us really the bigger fan? There are always smaller goals for every team that's not a true contender. Some quick speculative math: First Rnd v. Dallas -- 40% chance, 2nd Rnd v. Phoenix -- 40% chance, WCF v. Spurs -- 20%, Finals v. Detroit/Miami -- 25%, so .4 x .4 = .16 x .2 = .032 x .25 = .008. So let's say a 1% chance at the title. Winning any given round is possible. Winning series after series with a team built to do nothing but score is highly unlikely.
