Kings add to coaching staff--Hire Cousin's old highschool coach

If it helps, I'm all for it. Don't see how it can hurt. If Otis can help Cousins mature both on and off the court, why not?

There's nothing more important to the franchise than the development of Cousins. If this guy already has a rapport with him, can mentor him and focus on his development, then it can only be a positive. Also, the guy worked for over a decade at Pete Newell's Big Man Camp, so he's taught fundamentals to lots of NBA big men and so can be of help there not only to Cuz, but to Whiteside and JT as well.

Yeah, this looks patronagy and everything, but given Cousins possible maturity issues a trusted voice may help. Of course on the other hand to whatever degree Cousins has maturity issues he was developing them on this guy's watch, so who knows. As long as everybody else doesn't think this means they should get their own coach too I don't see how it could really hurt though.

Is this move to appease Cousins for making him start the season on the bench, or is it to support Cousins who will be thrown into the role of an NBA starter?

from things I have read Otis is almost like a father to DMC. this I think will be HUGE for his development.

This was the feeling I got before I even read your post. Cousins had no real father and this man appears to be the father figure in his life. I think it's a brillant move. I'm sure Cousins is very happy about it.

You really don't think of anything other than who starts, do you? With all the other possible reasons to hire this guy, that is the one you think of?

The team's strategy seems to be to supplement the lack of veteran leadership on the roster with lots of influential figures on the coaching staff.

The question will be who keeps things safe when the players are out on the town, alone in the locker room or out on the court? It sort of forces Evans to be more of a leader, but I wonder if leadership is something you must also learn from other players. Does it get passed down or do you just have it? Tyreke's quiet nature doesn't yell leader to me, but guys like Duncan managed to lead with simple, affable personalities.

As some of you know i am from Alabama. Hughley is without a doubt one of the top Basketball coaches in the nation.
BTW he only coached DMC 1 year his maturity issues came in birmingham then he moved to mobile where hughley was his coach.

Dude must have NAILED that interview. I have no idea why, but I have yet to pick my jaw up off the floor. This is just weird.

It sounds like this guy is well qualified to be an assistant coach in the NBA. And with his Pete Newell experience, it sounds like the real big man coach that most people have been waiting for. Reef is a good guy, but he's still more of an ex-player than veteran coach at this point of his post playing career. Looks to be a great move.

Thanks for the info! Sounds good to me!

Doesn't it also say somewhere that Hughley has worked for a number of years at Big Man training camps? I think he's an excellent addition to the staff.

Yup it said he's worked 10 years at the big man's camp.

Sounds like he's much more than just making sure Cousins takes the right path.

We've all seen what happens with guys like Lebron who have too many money grubbing, negatively influential voices in their ear, so I can appreciate that the Kings are at least making an effort to push our stars in the opposite direction. If he's able to bring that big man knowledge to the underdeveloped basketball minds of Whiteside and JT, all the better.

Speaking of which: anyone know what Hakeem the Dream is doing these days? I know he worked personally with Whiteside a while back, but man, I'd love to get him on the bench to be a rich man's Patrick Ewing. Between Hakeem and Bill Walton, you'd have your Yoda and Obi-Wan of big men to personally tutor our brand new bigs in the ways of greatness.

I saw him putting the post moves on Antonio Gates and Terrell Owens the other day on that Spike show, Pros vs. Joes, so I'm gonna hope that he's not up to much lately.

I heard that Hakeem is currently more comfortable working privately with players rather than being hired.

I think it was a good move. Tyreke has Team Tyreke to watch over him. Demarus just has his sister and mom. We tend to forget that these guys are still technically teenagers when they come into the league.

Does anyone else see how this will benefit Jason, Hassan and maybe even Landry? This guy is one of the top big man coaches in the Nation. He just HAPPENED to coach Cousins and have a strong relationship with him. THis is more about a big man coach to replace Gates who left, and less to do with 'baby-sitting' which is just an added bonus. The guy coached HIGH SCHOOL. He knows the age group. With the bulk of under 22 year olds on our roster, we have someone with the experience of handling immature players and turning them into men. How is this a bad signing?

I agree. The connection to Cousins may or may not have got him the interview, but he's certainly got a good resume to stand on. !0 years at the the Newll's big man's camp and he likely has connections in the NBA from being a coach in the NBA in China program, too. So it's not like he can't do a lot for all our big men. Hopefully, it does benefit all of them.
