It sucks, but them's the rules. We can't pay more than he would have gotten on his rookie deal had Memphis exercised the option. So yes, we are potentially being penalized for Memphis's decision.

Can we sign him to say a 3 year $16 mil deal with player options after 1st or 2nd year? So we can re-sign him for more later and he has security in case of injury?

I really don't get why the hell MEM would decline his option. He wasn't as good the last few years, of course, but there's nothing I see where he was just a clear give up option. He's not putting up gaudy numbers, yet, but if you can sneak this guy another contract and keep him long-term... man. It's there.
All good stuff. It's that maximum contract ceiling that we can give him that has me worried.
This is going to be fun! Maybe he will stick around past June, even though "the rules" make it less likely. I could see LaRavia signing for the maximum permitted, with a promise to compensate him properly with a multiyear contract in 2026-27.
Assuming that is allowed, of course.
So if we had 30mm in cap space, we can only sign him for 5.x MM?
It does seem weird that we would be hamstrung by Memphis's decision and yet we were facing something similar with Giles?
It does turn out that Giles did not create a bidding war.
You just got to get him to ink the 2/10 with a PO in the 2nd season and then I'm pretty sure you can use your MLE or Early Bird rights gives him the bigger contract.
Still, I like the risk. LaRavia should never have been available; getting him in the building, getting him a real role I think could matter to keep him.
Hopefully they just become piece 8 and 9 that he trusts to play. Christie hasn't given anyone off the bench any sort of leash outside of Keon and Lyles. Now, he should be comfortable going 9, with ease.
Hell yeah. Love to see it! Maybe some of the guys will get together during that all star break and really get to know each other on the court.
They have GG Jackson and Wells (also have for super cheap another guy who broke out last year but is currently injured Vince Williams @SF)on 2nd round deals who are both current/potential starters and younger, he looked bad the the last few seasons basically he was a 3 and D who couldn't do either , now all of a sudden he got way stronger and does everything well but nothing elite. Memphis also want to extend Santi it was the right call at then time but Jake really turned it around and has been great this year in terms of winning impact. Some LaRavia stats:

I think Jake is a starting level player like a bigger better shooting Kyle Anderson in his Spurs/Memphis days.
I like that comp, just with more athleticism and speed lol. But a "good at everything, not amazing at one thing" sort of guy
But the reason they didn't pick up his option in the first place is that for his first two seasons he just couldn't stay healthy.
The fact that he’s only been healthy for 1 of his 3 seasons in the NBA may help the Kings retain him this summer.
With most teams in salary cap hell, not many teams will have the cap space to take a flyer on someone who has a long injury history.
