I think he expects to get a stupid offer and it will be too big to refuse and even though @iowamcnabb just went over why so many are bad fits, it just takes one team who missed on their first choice to turn to him as plan B, so I fully expect him to get it. I just hope it truly is a stupid amount of money and not like 1 or 2 million more per season than we can offer.

He may have overestimated his expectations then since not many teams have the cap space and a sign and trade can only get him what the Kings can offer.

Orlando, Detroit, Philly all expected to have money we can’t give.
 
I went thought the thread and I am really surprised some are saying they we have to let monk leave …
If this team ever wants to build a hard fighting playoff units that starts with resigning monk and making sure Fox Domas and Keagan are happy …
We all know the season would have gone different with Monk healthy in the last games …
I also don’t think that not staring is and issue in his case cause he gets stable 30+ minutes , which more then starter gets at many cases …

It's not a choice of letting him leave. Kings can offer him the early bird contract or a 1 year contract at lower salary then give him a bigger one or he can sign a bigger contract if one is out there.

I just hope he doesn't Bonzi himself, turn down the Kings offers then then the Kings move on and make moves only to have the other teams never make an offer. Now he's left taking a mid level.

I don't think the Kings are going to begrudge him if he listens to other offers the way they told DDV to shove it. I don't think they can afford to. I think Fox is good with Monk getting paid elsewhere but it would not go over well if they pulled a deal. It will happen in the first few hours of the signing period or won't happen at all.
 
IDK, after watching MM’s recent media interview, his body language and overall demeanor didn’t give me the vibe that he’s coming back.

One thing he said a couple times was “that’s my agents job”, which to me is a copout answer. Shifting responsibility/blame.

No, Malik, your agents job is to secure you the best deal once you’ve outlined what it is YOU want. Your agent negotiates, of course, on your behalf but does so based upon what you told them is important to you. Your agent ultimately presents the available options and YOU make the ultimate decision on what to do.
 
I think Monk will go to some other team where he will be promised a starting unit position. I think every player wants to be valuable and start the games, instead of coming from the bench (even if you are sixth man candidate).
Also, I have a feeling that management will have to do some serious changes and we will meet next season with quite a different people in the team.

I guess this comes down to what qualifies as a better offer. Maybe this is implied in your post but a "better offer" doesn't always just mean contract years and $$$. I think he said in an interview that he'll also consider things like:
  • overall role
  • minutes
  • team "fit"
  • team outlook (potential playoffs, etc.)
  • front office and coaching staff
  • other players on the team
I think what the Kings can offer in several of those instances may be better than what other likely teams pursuing him might be able to provide. I also think he may just be playing a bit coy to make sure the Kings offer the full amount he's eligible for here.

If a team comes in with a $25+ mil offer then, yeah, he'll probably bolt for somewhere else due to the significant pay discrepancy. I guess we'll just have to see and everything else is purely speculation on our part.

I know I personally have not always pursued the highest-paying job offered in my career due to other circumstances (I knew I wouldn't like who the VP above me would be, or that I wouldn't like the work as much, or the company fit wasn't as good, or whatever).

Not an ETO. ETO can only be done after year four of a five-year deal, but we can only offer a max of years with Early Bird. We could offer 3 years with a player option on year 4, but we can't make it an ETO.

But the difference between ETOs and player options are small and somewhat esoteric (ETOs allow reductions in salary not allowed in options, some extension rules) so really for all intents and purposes a player option is just as good.

Yeah but even if he doesn't take it if Detroit offered 4/100 if he expected to do a 2+2 on the early-Bird when he opts out he'd expect us to pay him 32m per on those final two years. Uh, not with this CBA.

So you know, I really hope nobody throws more than 4/80 at him because I think he'd take the 2m discount. But 4/90 or above? He gone.
 
I don't think the market for Monk is as hot as people on the board think. The only attractive team for Monk might be Orlando. However, if I was the Magic, Monk would be my 3rd choice behind Lavine and Klay for the cap space they have. Monk is nice, but it doesn't take them far.

The problem with this is the Bulls played better without Lavine and Klay is not the same player. The Kings record without Monk was bad.

From the Magic perspective, you want to use your cap to get an all star while Banchero, Wagner and Suggs are still on rookie contract, not a 6th man of the year candidate. I am not saying Magic can't use him, but there are better use for their cap.
 
Every year we as fans think we can squeeze some player we like in at a reasonable contract only for some team with 40m in space to go hog wild. 9 out of 10 times it is a terrible decision and years later we debate if we still like this player or hate the contract and should trade for them.

The only thing different today is this player is on our team, and was in fact, a pretty vital part of it. It really sucks that the rules are what they are and we can't match.

But I just don't see how a team that knows we have a maximum contract can't just bid comfortably over it without going insane to win his services.
 
from what i hear on Dlo and KC today, Philly will only have 2 players under contract and some major money to spend. And the magic have had major trouble scoring in the playoffs. Monk would look good in orlando. And it would be a great move for his pocket book.

It was clearly going to Reid in the final weeks. Vivek must be livid with all the funny treatment Kings are getting between officiating and being cheated out of individual recognitions (maybe that saves him some bonus money, though missing the playoffs cost him much more).

Cheated out of the individual? Last year we won and got pieces of a whole lot of individual. All/NBA, All/Star, Clutch Player of the Year, Coach, GM. The 1140 commercial bumpers would not ever let you forget about it! Lol

This season just wasn’t the same. The only blatant cheating (in regards to awards/recognition) this season was Domas not getting the AllStar.

The all star, 6th man, and inevitably I am prepared for Domas missing all-NBA.

Also when the guy that wins the award is promoted to starter, which padded the stats and bumped him into the award, it's effing dumb.
