Kidd staying with Mavs

Yeah that's a long contract for a old player. Especially if they are developing Barea. Cuban must believe that their championship window will still be open over the next 3 years.

Call me stupid, but I find that a fair contract. After all, I believe we have Beno for 5 years at $30. I'd much rather have kid for less years and less money.

Possibly they're going for the last attempt. They have $40 million in expiring contracts to get another star in a trade and even if they don't, they still have amazing financial flexibility after this year.

You know what, stupid? I think that's a pretty reasonable contract, too. ;)

I was wondering if Kidd's reputation alone (despite his age) was going to get him into the $10M+ per year range. What he got was only a touch over the MLE at this point. Would I have paid that for Kidd? No. Certainly not as the Kings. But the Mavs need a PG, and they've locked up a good one who can still play and he'll be the fifth-best paid player on their team. He'll probably be the second or third-best player on their team for the length of the contract. I'd also say that at that salary, he's tradeable as an on-court commodity as opposed to just an expiring contract, too.

I just have to wonder if part of the reasoning behind the offer was Cuban's reluctance to repeat his error of letting Steve Nash get away.

Yup, he did let Nash get away. Kidd, though, is 37 and very much toward the end of his career. Outstanding PG in his day - I think his best days are way behind him. Nash still had a lot of gas in the tank when the Mavs lost him.
