Kevin Martin

Very nice to see Kevin do well last night. It looked like he was just out playing his game and he looked comfortable for the first time in a long time. I have the same questions/concerns as Brick especially on his consistancy. This really was his only good complete game that I can remember. I am not ready to pronounce him King but I am not going to rain on his parade on a night that he had a great game.

We need him to build on this and continue to put together a solid effort on a consistant basis.

I liked what I saw last night and GG KMART!

As one who's been very critical of Martin's play, I was pleasantly surprised by his showing last night. Fit in well, no TO's, career night, new team dimensions of athleticism unfolding for the Kings with his performance. Nice to see - let's see if he can really build on this!

Kevin Martin
“The difference tonight was coming out and not pressing. I was relaxing knowing that a couple of games were not going to ruin (my) career. I can’t get down on two bad games and I certainly can’t feel Michael Jordan confidence after one game, but it felt good. It’s not Kevin versus (Francisco) Garcia from day one draft night – it’s not going to be that ever – it’s going to be Kevin and Francisco helping this team. So if he has a good game and we win I’m proud of him and if I have a good game and we win, he’s proud of me – and we just keep on playing. Getting rebounds and assists, steals – that’s what’s going to keep me on the court, not jacking shots. It’s just basketball, just get out there and play.”

I really like this comment about cisco and him playing together.

As a family-friend, I, too, have no compunction about sugarcoating anything to do with Kevin. He has both sucked and looked great and has not achieved the consistency yet that is necessary for having longevity in the league.

But you know what?

Calling out "family" and "family-friends" about their optimistic opinions rendered here on Kevin's play is inappropriate. The optimism expressed about Kevin's play and potential is no more than those that say Bibby will break out of that shooting slump, Cisco is making rookie mistakes but he'll still be great, and numerous other player comments here that paint a rosy picture when they have not performed at a high level.

EVERY fan has some sort of bias, and it's true that those closer to a player have a bias for that player. I just don't think it's right to try to call out a subset of fans here to try to discount their opinions. You could easily do that with the big-time fans of EVERY Kings player.

The family and family/friends are welcome, and of course are going to have rosy hopes for Kevin. As somebody who is on this board it does not bother me in the least because I know who they are and where they are coming from -- legitimate hopes and dreams for one of their own.

There are two places where it becomes a problem:

1) when f/f of ANY player take it personal and demand that their guy be treated better/special by non-f/fs; or
2) where an outsider asks for an opinion on Kevin without knowing that its his potentially his aunt, friend, or a superfan responding. Which was the case here that inspired my initial comment.

And no, a f/fs rosy assessment is CONSIDERABLY different from a an assessment based on purely basketball. It quite obviously involves much more than just ability/what you see on the court. There is a very personal interest in seeing things work out well, and a very personal belief in the player on a personal level that makes f/fs basically "homers" -- a very benign (normally) and completely understandable class of homers. But homers nonetheless. Its like calling up somebody's mom for a job reference. :)

I was pleased to see Kevin explode in the 3rd quarter. I have seen him play quite a bit now and think he's an above average player. He also appears to have heart, which is swell. I would be very surprised however if he could deliver like that on a consistent basis. Particularly in terms of scoring.

Then again, I could be wrong - after all I thought Milwaukee was gonna beat the Kings the other night. Tough team to figure.

Personally, I think the F and F's, as you call them, have taken the 'critques' of his game pretty well. The only time I've seen people get mad is when people make asinine comments like 'he just wants to look good' WTF?:D

Ask for an opinion on, say Peja, for example and you can get the same type of homerism and 'superfan' response, just not from his aunt;)

I'm biased, I really like the kid (and his family) and want him to succeed. I'm also critical of his game when he doesn't play well, although I don't feel the need to post it much, since every mistake is usually covered pretty well by the people who are biased the other way

To all player friends and family. :) Please note that Brickie is a level-headed and fair commentator. I am certain that he meant no insult or harm to any player, especially kevin. IMHO, he is the best basketball analyst we have, and I would not want to see him dummy-up just to satisfy those who may be more emotionally involved. Everybody loves Kevin and wants him to thrive. We like Cisco too.

All I can say, Brick, is that IF the friends and family of Kevin Martin (and other players) are truly welcomed here, then we should not try to discount their opinions as always biased (or try to distinguish our own opinions as being "non-family" opinions) when they involve discussions of those close to them.

With that said, I feel that you are amongst the most BALANCED posters on this board when it comes to overall evaluation of player and team performances, and I enjoy reading your very analytical post-game grades.

Family? Non-family? Friends? Non-friends? Fans? Critics?

I DON'T CARE!

I think Kevin did one helluva job last night and I think he deserves the major props.

Of course his family and friends are proud. Why in the world wouldn't they be?

This, to me, is detracting from what is REALLY important. Last night, Kevin Martin had a stellar game and, continuing the tradition I started last year, I devoted the "Any questions?" thread to him...

So, let's get all the silly stuff out of the way and just all have a group hug.

:D

Oh god, please. Kid has one good game and suddenly he is the second coming or something? He's getting all this love simply because he did't SCREW up like he has been? give me a break. this thread is ridiculous. maybe midseason if he starts to be consistant then we can have threads saying "any questions" because simply at this point there are alot of questions.. like can he duplicate those types of performances?

Always gotta be one.

The kid had a great game. He was an integral part of a much needed win. And no thread is ridiculous, by the way. If you don't like a thread, then stay the heck out of it, as I stay out of the ones that are big downers.

Well, actually I will continue to voice my truthful criticism where I feel it is appropriate. Thanks for the suggestion though. And actually, you know I thought the point of these threads was so people could offer their perspectives in their own right. I guess if one does not agree with the majority of posters then they should "stay they heck out" huh? Besides that you had no rebuttal argument to credit your statement. Sure, kid had a great game. As for the "much needed win" part, um... we did need the win. Ok, but we were playing the Carter-less nets. And after all the truly dissapointing outings he had prior to that im glad he finally did something out there. Show me every night. Actually we play Miami next Friday, MAYBE if he puts up similar type numbers against a team that is better than us and does it on a normal basis, I will be the one to start a thread like this.

Please Don't Feed The Troll
Well everyone else is doing it, so why can't I?

T'was a night like any other,
In late January,
I was bored of work,
So went to the 'Bak'ry.

An idea did I spy,
By the name "Animal Stunt".
The troll had been released,
So I had to be blunt.

I re-read the idea,
And all annotations,
The troll who'd posted
Thought he deserved congratulations

I picked holes in his theories,
And dropped a fishbone on his head.
"What an idiot!" He cried,
"He left out a 'squared'".

Other 'bakers joined in,
Deriding this Animal Stunt.
As [NeverDie] said,
"GTR's a sick *@#!".

A few days later,
Back came the troll,
With an "idea" entitled,
"Mandatory Reason To Vote No".

So incensed was he,
That genius he thought himself to be,
Had been proved fallacious,
By the Halfbakery.

And the fishbones still came,
As [StarChaser] told him,
"Please stop whinging,
Your ideas are dumb".

But worst of all,
A truly bad idea,
Was the one entitled,
"Breathalyzer".

The troll spake up,
"This DOES NOT EXIST!".
"Of course it does,
How else can cops tell when we're pissed?".

So take this advice,
Heed these words,
Or soon you may be taken,
By the trollster's curse.

When all's said and done,
This should be your goal,
When you see [m-f-d],
Please don't feed the troll.

Nice poem Sparky (even as a reprint and even if I didn't understand half of it). A grinning KingsFan saying, Any questions? sure ain't expecting a 3-pt rebuttal. Personally I'm happy that the Kings won and a young player got a chance to shine. Bibby had his typical great game vs Jason Kidd but we expect that of him.

Yeah, it's a wacky poem. It must have been written in response to some particular troll droppings (which is my term for troll posts). The gist of it is clear, however; there is no point in arguing with a troll. No amount of reasoned, rational argument will dissuade them. Unlike most problems, trolls will usually go away if they are ignored.

Go Kings!

Okay, I'll try and use small words so you understand:

The "Any questions?" thread is a tradition around here. I started it back before the board crashed. It is used to honor the Kings player that has, on any given night, done such a great job that he simply would get the game ball. Since we cannot actually hand the player the game ball, the "Any questions" thread was created...

Well, actually I will continue to voice my truthful criticism where I feel it is appropriate. Thanks for the suggestion though. And actually, you know I thought the point of these threads was so people could offer their perspectives in their own right. Um, no. You won't be the one to start the thread. That spot is taken - by tradition.

Before jumping in with both feet and making a fool of yourself, you might try finding out what you're talking about.

since when is atxrocker a troll?
kind of a bummer that when someone says they want kevin to show his stuff every night he/she is labeled a troll.

yeah. this is pretty ridiculous!!!! i guess my definition of a troll is ALOT different then some of the other members on this board.

first, i'm new so what i say will probably have no weight, and hopefully i too am not labelled a troll, a lurker yes(LOL) a troll i'm not.

I'm a little appauled that the term is being slapped on someone for 1. either missing the point on where the the origin of a phase came from. and/or 2. disagreeing and basically saying, in a relatively mature matter that, he would like to see it on a consistent basis, an everyday occurrance rather than 1 or twice in 10 or so game.

Nothing wrong with that, i think everyone would like to see it happen more often than not. To go on and single him/her out and call them a trol is a little much, don't you think. To mock and animate it is even ridiculous, it's a bit embarrassing as well when it's coming from a moderator too. His behaviour doesn't warrant "TROLL" or anything like. Honestly, like i said though my words have no weight i think the man or woman is deserved an apology for such actions. The man/woman is not a troll.

Again, he may have missed the point of why the phase "any questions" was dubbed, but that's no reason label someone a troll and then add more insult by poking fun with an animation. he didn't talk down to anyone, did he? Maybe i missed it.

I guess my meaning of troll is different as well.

well lets see...

"Oh god, please." "he did't SCREW up like he has been?" "give me a break." "this thread is ridiculous."

These were taken from his post... so where's the respect?

I have no problem with his view, but look at the way he presented it. It's no wonder everyone thinks he's a troll now.
