Kevin Martin Interview on KHTK

KNIGHTS OF NI: Ni! Ni! Ni! Ni! Ni!
ARTHUR: Who are you?
HEAD KNIGHT: We are the Knights Who Say... 'Ni'!
RANDOM: Ni!
ARTHUR: No! Not the Knights Who Say 'Ni'!
HEAD KNIGHT: The same!
BEDEVERE: Who are they?
HEAD KNIGHT: We are the keepers of the sacred words: 'Ni', 'Peng', and 'Neee-wom'!
RANDOM: Neee-wom!
ARTHUR: Those who hear them seldom live to tell the tale.
HEAD KNIGHT: The Knights Who Say 'Ni' demand a sacrifice.

ARTHUR: Knights of Ni, we are but simple travellers who seek the enchanter who lives beyond these woods.
HEAD KNIGHT: Ni!
KNIGHTS OF NI: Ni! Ni! Ni! Ni! Ni!...
ARTHUR: Ow! Ow! Ow! Agh!
HEAD KNIGHT: We shall say 'ni' again to you if you do not appease us.
ARTHUR: Well, what is it you want?
HEAD KNIGHT: We want... a shrubbery! [dramatic chord]

Oh, a nice shrubbery, to be sure! It's not too expensive, is it?

;)

The Holy Grail is my all-time favorite movie. I have worn out two VHS tape versions of it and finally got the DVD Special Edition. I still cannot watch it all the way through without having to pause while I laugh.

Hmmm! Much like me and this thread. Couldn't read it all the way through because I had to pause while I laughed. :D

Thanks for transcribing all that, 1K. I was trying to listen at work, but missed it.

Nothing in that interview surprises me. He's working his behind off, just like I thought he would. I think he is going to change a few minds this season.

This was arguably the best part of the whole interview:

Kevin: Before I was working out about 5 days a week, and then shooting 6 days (a week). I was working out with Al every morning around 10:30, and then I went out and worked with the 3 assistant coaches. And it was just me up in there, so it was 3 against 1. You can imagine what they were doing. And then 2 nights a week, me and Bobby were playing on the Summer League team…whatever that SPDL is.

Grant: I got ya.

Kevin: We were playing in that. So that was a pretty “active rest time”, that what Al called it.

Grant: All right, so what do you do after Summer League?

Kevin: After Summer League, I’ll probably take just a little bit of time off. Then I’m kind of undecided, because I’ve got a personal trainer in Florida, but my game elevated so much from working with our 3 coaches (here). They’re going to be around, and I’ve got a house out there (near Arco), so might as well not waste the rent money and just keep on working and developing (here)?

Mike: Kevin, you talked about working with the trainer a couple or three times here, what are your goals physically? Do you want to bulk up? I mean do you want to jump farther? What is it about that working with the trainer that you want to accomplish? Because, you’re thin, and there’s no crime in that as long as you can play, but is it something that you want to address? Do you want to add a little weight?

Kevin: Not so much add weight, because I’m going to add weight as I get mature. But I played in the Summer League last year at 172 or 173, and this year I’m playing at 186 or 187. So that’s a 13-pound difference from Summer League last year to this year. And for my size, I’m pretty strong when people just bang on me. So I’m going to keep on developing some more strength and get mature.

Grant: The one thing I think that you could provide that this team really needs is defense. I mentioned several times when we were in China last year, I was very impressed with the way you guarded Tracy McGrady. I know it was only pre-season, but you like playing defense, don’t you? And I would think that this is an area that you could really excel in.

Kevin: Yeah. I think I’m a good isolation defensive player, cuz that’s all the league is. Once the shot clock gets below 10, it’s just iso. With my quickness and jumping ability, I feel like that’s where I excel at. But then again, I’ve also got the offensive game to back that up.

I get the feeling, both from what it says there and from what you (1kingzfan) and KG have said that the Kings organization is giving Kevin a lot of attention to helping him be the best he can be. (Sorry for the corny phrase.) I think it's a two-way street, and both sides seem to be progressing in the right direction.

Thanks again, 1kingzfan.

thanks 1kf i really appreciate you takin time to post/type this out for us

I agree, VF21. You re-posted the greatest substance of what was learned.

Oh yeah, and although some of you know this already, the "Al" whom Kevin was referring to in the interview is Kings Strength and Conditioning Coach Al Biancani.

i really expect a breakout season from kevin martin... i actually kind of hope we dont land a shooting guard so we can switch kevin and francisco in their to get em going

When is Al's retirement effective? He is going to be missed...

Hope the team runs some plays for him this season, instead of letting him float on the perimeter and play catch and shoot. He doesn't look comfortable at all, probably because his instincts are telling him to slash but the system tells him to shoot or pass. The catching and shooting will come, but I want to see him play on the ball more.

the kid's got the skills. he just needs the comfort level. only way he's gonna get it is on the court. the summer league should do him some good. it will reveal a lot to the kings coaching staff about what they have in special k. if he's hitting the weight room, then i think he'll be fine. i look forward to seeing him in action come november.

Wish I could watch these games -- thing is, as I recall Kevin tore up last year's summer league too. As did Gerald before him. Its not always a great indicator of success. What I really want to see progress in his shooting stroke and his confidence/decision-making. He's got a lot of tools, but he's got to be able to apply them in a coordinated fashion against true NBAers once the season starts. Problem with summer leagues is often there is so little defense being played, and by guys who are not really NBA worthy, that players with significant holes/flaws in there game are still able to get away with it and put up big numbers only to find those things taken advantage of and holding them back during the real season. I'd rather he only scores 15 in summer league, but does it with a revamped actual jumper and an in between game, than have him score 25 on a variety of things that won't be there for him once the real games begin.

And I also agree with Padrino -- the quandry with Kevin is that he has the game of a primary offensive player, not a roleplayer. If put into a roleplayer's role, he is only going to be marginaly effective and frankly you could do better. What you need to do is give him the ball regularly to really get the most out of him. But that requires some faith from the team and coaches -- every play called for Kevin is a play not called for Mike or Peja, and everybody has to have confidence that it is worth it. Bit of a Catch-22. Hopefully will be resolved in training camp. That's going to be a real key 4 week stretch for Kevin's career.

Dennis: Oh but if I went 'round sayin' I was Emperor, just because some moistened bint lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away.

Okay. That did it.

I just may have to go have a Python-fest right now even if it is after 1:00 AM.

Something that I have learned about Kevin is that he is a very respectful young man. Last year, as a Rookie, he often felt it was his role to be supportive of the veterans. So, he was careful not to take on too much for fear of stealing any of the vet's limelight.

In the SPDL, he was a Sacramento King and a veteran to all the college kids. As a result, I watched him take over and "control" many plays, including defensive set ups. So he was the 2nd highest scorer in the league behind only Bibby (who played in only 2 games).

I believe that since Kevin is not a Rookie you will see much greater things from him this year. I also think the coaching staff think this and that is why they are so high on him.

As I said before in talking about the starting 2 spot:

You want it, Kevin? Then go get it, young man.

Thanks 1kf

I'm really excited about the whole physical traning aspect that he's been working on...and laughed out loud when I read that GO was the one that told him he's still a rookie even in the summer league after the regular season is over..I mean that totally sounds like something he'd say...lol
