On Wednesday, March 15, Sacramento Monarchs guard Kara Lawson was flying high above Sacramento with the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels. The Blue Angels were in town to perform at the California Capitol Airshow at Mather Airport and they selected a few VIP’s for a once in a lifetime Blue Angels experience. Lawson was paired with a pilot to fly in one of the flight demonstration team’s F/A-18 Hornets.
Upon arrival at the airport, Lawson had the opportunity to check out the plane she was going to fly in and changed into her flight suit. Once dressed, she was briefed by the Blue Angels for her upcoming flight. She learned various maneuvers to make sure her fight went smoothly. At this point, Lawson said she wasn’t at all nervous. It probably helped that she was told, “they don’t eject on Wednesday’s,” even though she was briefed on how to use a parachute.
After the briefing Lawson had some time to kill and seemed to be getting antsy. She informed everyone that her flight suit was lacking a name badge and created her own homemade badge with some tape and a pen. Lawson admitted to not putting much thought into it, as it read K. Lawson. She was trying to think of a cool ‘Top Gun’ code name like Iceman or Maverick, but nothing came to her.
Finally, it was Lawson’s turn to fly. She walked out to the plane, climbed the ladder and took her seat. After getting strapped in and briefed again, Lawson took a few minutes for some final interviews and photos. Before taking off, she told the pilot that they needed code names. Ko-jack informed Lawson of his already existing code name and asked for hers. Lawson answered, “K-Law, the Klaw (claw).” She was all smiles and ready to go.
The plane took off and Lawson was out of site. While on her flight she said they flew through a canyon and she saw lots of snow and trees. Thirty-minutes later, they did a fly over to let everyone know of their return. Shortly after, Lawson was back at the airport, glad to be on the ground again.
As Lawson got off the plane she admitted to feeling a bit woozy from all the “tricks,” but all in all had a great time.

I work at Franklin Templeton in Rancho and saw and heard these planes all day yesterday. WOW.......A couple of times it sounded like they were right next to the building. It was amazing. I could see them outside my window. Very cool.....
