JR Smith sentenced to 90 days in jail

Run a stop sign, kill a man (JR Smith) = 90 days

Drive drunk, kill a man (Dante Stallworth) = 30 days

Arrange organized dog fights, kill some dogs (Michael Vick) = 23 months.

Nice.

The American Justice system at work! I hate to be a cynic given my current profession, but I have to believe that if either JR Smith or Stallworth were not as affluent they would be spending some more time in jail. I was talking to some DA buddies here in Sac County and they both would have spent a LOT more time in jail normally.

Believe me, I know exactly what you mean. I'm clerking at Orange County DA right now, and wow... truly eye opening experience.

Makes you second guess the criminal justice system, doesn't it. I clerked for two years at the Sac DA's office. I'd still be there if the budget didn't suck, but the farther I get from it, the more I see the hypocrisy in it. Not that they are all bad, just sometimes justice gets lost.

Absolutely. The system is flawed, at best.

Didn't mean to hijack the thread. Back to the topic, I really hope he can put this behind him this summer, stay out of trouble, and be a key contributor to the Nuggets this season. They are one of the few teams in the West, along with San Antonio and Portland, that can keep LA out of the finals, and I want them to have their roster fully loaded.

The criminal justice system is a tool of the rich to keep the poor in check, thats why rich people never do major time (unless they are named Madoff! But then again that guy preyed on the rich).

God Bless America

Cynical much folks?? :)

Lots of people run stop signs. Should they all be sent to jail for long sentences? In this case it was coincidental (and unfortunate) that someone died. But there apparently was no malice involved, and the stupidity that caused the accident was the same as the stupidity that prompts thousands of other americans to run stop signs every year and get their slaps on the wrist...

I think people are making more of this than should be because there was a death involved.

If you can somehow set that aside I'm not sure how you can equate a momentary lapse in judgment and no intent with Mike Vick's huge dog fighting operation...

I should probably just erase all the above as to not start a flame war. :) Very sad for everyone involved in this case.

Yeah, I'm a little surprised by this for a different reason -- I would think that being responsible for the death of a close friend is punishment enough. Is 30 days in jail really going to make much difference one way or another?

There is a difference between making a California stop and driving 70 in a 35. Going that fast there's no way he even slowed down to look at traffic. Accidental deaths and tragic and understandable. This was negligent and reckless.

J.R. Smith has had a lifelong lapse in judgemnt. It started when he was born without any higher brain functions whatsoever. He would cut a more sympathetic character if he hadn't already had his license suspended half a dozen times for various idiocy, and if he hadn't been driving on a suspended one when he killed his friend. Rather than waste our time with a 30 day wrist slap we should offer castatration as an alternative -- would help the human gene pool if that one did not reproduce.

I thought I saw on ESPN news earlier the whole 90 days would be suspended based on 500 hours of community service and something else?
