Joey Crawford SUSPENDED!!!

Strongly suspect that was it for Crawford -- this is a man with a very large ego, and very hard to imagine that he would be able to take such a public rebuke and come back next year having taken such a hit in credibility.

How long do you figure until he gets a daytime talk show?

I just hope that this will make the officials realize that we pay to see the players play and not the officials blow their whistle....let alone eject someone for laughing.

agree 100%. Granted, ejecting players from games can be warranted, and even necessary when things get out of control on the court because you have to keep the game safe. However, what is it coming to when a ref can kick a player out just because his feelings are hurt?! I think that Stern took the right action & I sincerely hope that the result would have been the same regardless of the player involved.

Finally something good to come out of this season :)

Now if only Bevetta could announce he is retiring......
Bavetta can STILL go to hell for 2002 Game 6...Bibby fouling Kobe's elbow with his nose. Anyways...as far as Crawford is concerned, I doubt this will change the way he officiates, he is what he is, and always will be, no matter how many times Stern gives him a slap on the hands.

Oh please. No he isn't: I can think of five worse off the top of my head (Violet Palmer, Zach Zarba, Tim Donaghy, Monty Mccutchen, Scott Foster)

What's so horrible about them? Joey Crawford, Bavetta and Javie are the most infamous in my book. Tim Donaghy is bad but not on the level of those three

Infamous and bad are mutually exclusive: Crawford, Bavetta and Javie are all great referees. I'm inclined to suspect that the only reason you probably think those three are bad, and the other ones are not is because you don't associate them with contorversial calls that went against the Kings.

I've had League Pass for four years now, and I watch hundreds of games a year that aren't Kings games. When I take my homer glasses off, I feel quite confident saying that Crawford, Bavetta and Javie are all good referees, and the five guys I named all suck.

Dick Bavetta was the head of a crew that participated in one of the worst screw jobs in the history of the NBA. As far as I'm concerned he should have been suspended for that pathetic display back in 2002. What a disgrace, I almost stopped watching the NBA altogether. Now when it comes to Crawford I keep hearing he is one of the best referees in the NBA except for his hotheaded, power trip displays... sorry but IMO the two are not mutually exclusive. It's because he thinks he's more important than the players, than the game etc... and that he's capable of giving unwaranted T's and ejections in very big games that makes him a bad ref in my book. It was great to see one of those smug refs that have never been held accountable get taken down a peg. I hope he never comes back and because of his attitude which is atrocious even now when you see his post suspension quotes, I doubt he will be back.

Eh? Joey Crawford isn't a great ref, and I never said that he was. I just said that he isn't the "WORST official in the league, bar NONE."

I started feeling that way after watching the first round Minnesota-Lakers series in '03.

I like the Kings, but I'm an NBA fan first and foremost. :) You're implying one thing I agree with, though; a ref can make hundreds of great calls, but it's the one controversial one he gets remembered for.

It's not fair to discount Bavetta's reffing against the Kings in the Lakers series, though.

I may be off-base, but there seems to be a pattern of you considering officials who refereed series that went the Lakers' way to be bad refs... coincidence?

They are when we're someone like Violet Palmer takes his place. You have to take a practical view of this situation. A new wave of younger refs started to come along in the late 90s and early 00s -- some older refs retired, others got into trouble w/ the IRS. It's not a coincidence that fans seem to notice a general decline in the art since 2002 or 2003 (the two years you cited).

2003 is a non-issue compared to the 2004 and 2006 Finals. Look at the two teams that lost those series -- a former 3-peat team and a team that has won 66 games this year. Goes to show you how prohibitive the refs can be over a series when they allow only one team to play physical defense.

All this bad ref talk... and Joey Crawford blasted Dick Bavetta calling it "a travesty" if Dick ends up as the crew chief in the NBA finals.
