Jianlian to Nets for Jefferson

The Milwaukee Bucks have agreed in principle to trade Yi Jianlian to the New Jersey Nets for Richard Jefferson, two league sources told SI.com.

The Bucks also are sending Bobby Simmons to the Nets. He has $20.5 million left on a contract that expires in the summer of 2010, when LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh could become free agents.

This trade could be seen as a sign that the Nets truly are interested in getting involved in the LeBron sweepstakes, based in no small part on his close friendship with Nets minority owner Jay-Z. As a result of this trade, the Nets are no longer committed to paying Jefferson $15 million in 2010-11.

Yi's camp was said to be ecstatic about going to the rebuilding Nets and playing in a major market, which was one of the original concerns when he was drafted by the Bucks last year. Yi threatened to not sign with Milwaukee in hopes of forcing a trade to another team.

The Bucks, meanwhile, are providing new coach Scott Skiles with a veteran player who can help him win now. The Bucks also retain their No. 8 pick in the draft to further revamp their team. The Nets hold the No. 10 pick in the draft.

Good move for the Nets, nice rebuilding move. This is what I was talking about in regards to the Kings. We should be making moves like this. Trading vets for young guys. It's pointless keeping them since we're going nowhere.

I'm severely jealous right now. Why can't we be making bold moves for young guys? :(

Why do people always assume that simply because trades haven't been made there were NO attempts?

Does this mean Joe Alexander is not taken by the Bucks if available? I guess the Nets are preparing to take on Gallinari if he falls to them.

Myself, I don't assume we have not tried, it's just saddening to see other teams able to do things and we have not been able to.

I didn't assume that. I just find it hard to believe there are no teams out there that could be trading partners. Who knows, maybe we'll see a trade soon. Maybe not. Either way I won't be surprised.

attempting is all well and good, but it's still a failure if 1) the trade doesn't go through or 2) it goes through and sucks. hey, being a GM isn't easy. :)

dime dropper - You can find it hard to believe but we do not have a lot of tradebait to dangle out there in hopes of a bite. Sure, we can hypothesize about trading Martin, but that's not gonna happen. Face it - our veterans aren't good enough to elicit wild offers from desperate GMs.

Exactly. It's not like we could trade Brad or KT for Yi.

I understand that. I'm not mad at GP, frustrated would be a better term. We don't have a lot of trade bait, but we have some. I don't want to trade Martin, was that in reference to something I said or just regarding the dream scenarios that go on over in the personnel forums? Hopefully the latter.

Anyway, I don't want to get embroiled in a pointless debate. I'm not disagreeing with you, it's just frustrating to see all this movement when we need a clear out too.

You mean like

Bibby - age 30

for

Shelden - age 24 + a 2nd round draft pick age 19-22

Man.

Here btw is why that assumption gets made: there is an essential diconnect between "Petrie is the god of GMs" and "we try and fail year after year after year to get things done while other lesser GMs pull off nifty maneuvers." Both cannot be true.

Seems to me like the Nets got hosed. Jianlian had better turn out to be a really good PF, otherwise seems like the Nets could have gotten better value for Jefferson.

well, milwaukee also gave them simmons and a whole stack of chairs.

Not to sure I want Jefferson and the 42 million he has left on his deal

I'm pretty sure he was refferring to what the rebuilding team got i.e Yi Jianlian, a very promising and talented young player. Nobody here would be pushing for Jefferson.

Jefferson is irrelevant if you believe that Lebron will be their SF starting in 2010. They just cleared a spot for him and brought in a temporary fill-in (Simmons) who's good enough in the interim along with a young prospect at a position of need with a huge international following. I think it's a great deal for NJ/Brooklyn. Devin Harris is already slotted in at PG, Vince Carter at SG, then you add Lebron at SF, Jianlian at PF and whoever they can pickup at C in the next two years. Sounds like a good start to me. Remember they're already going to be moving into a new arena in Brooklyn in 2010 as well, maybe new logos and jerseys that year too.

PS - The Knicks are fooling themselves if they think that Lebron is going to choose them over his buddy Jay-Z and a chance to kick off the Nets first season in Brooklyn. Think Lebron wearing a Yankees cap and getting special Yankees pinstripe Nikes was a coincidence? This is Lebron we're talking about. He's probably had this planned for 4 years already.

Where there's no smoke, there is no fire. Why in the world would you want to assume that there has been a legitimate effort at a draft day trade (not a steal, just a trade) when Petrie has never made one in his entire career?
