Jerry Buss Pulls Off Talks With Lamar Odom..

Lakers team officials, who were not authorized to speak about the negotiations, said Buss offered Odom a deal for $9 million a season for four years at $36 million, or $10 million a season over three years for a total of $30 million.

...

Many in the Lakers' organization believe that Odom wants to accept Buss' offer -- and so do those close to Odom -- but he has failed to convince his agent.
Incredible.

Odom pulls a Bonzi? He better fire his agent now and run back to the Lakers asking forgiveness if he can't get his own agent to take 4/36M at his age and this economy.

i hope he pulls a bonzi and leave the lakers w/o a 'ship next season. odom and ariza were the x factors for the lake show last season.

Uh...doesn't his agent work for him? I'd be telling my agent to call and accept or be fired. If the rumors are correct that teams interested can't offer him more than the 5-year MLE, that's only $29 million. What's up with agents?

I don't think it's the money that's a problem for him (though he could be holding out for the same contract Hedo got). I think the bigger issue is playing time. With Artest coming in, Odom is probably expected to be the sixth man for the next 3 years and he's probably not happy with that. I think he'd like to get his 10 million a year, but he'd prefer to get it somewhere else -- like, say, Portland where he can stick it to the Lakers in the playoffs next year and make them feel sorry for not making him a priority.

You'd think Portland would have given Odom a call as soon as Hedo said no, but maybe they really don't want Odom. Or maybe the Brandon Roy contract situation is making them think twice about using all their cap space.

Unlikely: even untalented bigs get contracts; Wells didn't get signed because, when you come down to it, swingmen are two-a-penny in the NBA.

I'd say it's far likelier that Odom is holding out for a guaranteed starting job. Which would be ironic, because he's spent his career not wanting to be the man, and didn't start to thrive until he went to a team where he no longer had that responsibility, and now it seems as though, now that he has a ring, that role is no longer big enough for him.

Odom doesn't fit the profile of what they truly need. The Blazers already have two tall long-armed athlete SF/PFs (Travis Outlaw, LaMarcus Aldridge) and the rebounding work is already filled by Pryzbilla, Oden and Aldridge. Instead, they have been focusing on veteran stretch 3's with basketball IQ and passing ability (Turkoglu) or bruiser 4's (Millsap). That being said, with any chance to screw the Lakers over, the gamer Pritchard would probably jump at the opportunity to offer Odom a huge contract. It's not the right way to build a team (taking into account other teams instead of your own), but I can see him doing it.

They get rid of Ariza and Odom, acquire Artest and think they're better off?

Reading the article, I'm totally confused at why Odom would have to convince his agent of anything.

I personally thought the Lakers were much better with perenially over-hyped Bynum on the bench. Gasol, Odom, Artest, Kobe and a PG impress me a LOT more than Bynum, Gasol, Artest, Kobe and a PG. But hey...I'm not complaining. If Odom's agent wants to ruin the rest of his career and Odom lets him do it, that's his problem.

it seems that miami wants to get odom and boozer now. they want to trade for boozer and give the full mle to odom.

So how do your Laker fan friends feel about Odom? They glad to see him go or not real happy?

^^Dial-up means never having to watch YouTube, even if I really want to.

:(

Really, watch it. Very funny. Let it go for an hour if it takes that long. It can run while you are cooking dinner or something. :D

Regardless of whether or not Odom is a great fit with the Blazers, I'm still surprised that they aren't showing more interest. Wasn't Paul Allen the one that was trying to talk teams out of helping the Lakers in the summer of 2000? I remember him being angry that the Sonics helped facilitate a trade that would bring Horace Grant to the Lakers from Orlando, with the Sonics getting Patrick Ewing from New York.

The title runs through LA. Weaken them and you improve your own chances. Theoretically, Odom could miss half the season and it would still make sense to sign him. Throw in the fact that Portland has a hole at backup PF and it makes sense.

Oh well, it looks like they want to throw their money at Andre Miller. Let's keep our fingers crossed that Miami can come away with Odom.

the lakers lost alot of versatility for the triangle w/ Lamar Odom gone.. if he is indeed gone

After waiting 1 hr. 17 minutes, I was able to view the clip. Thanks, Gargy! And Warhawk, you were right.

:)

AriesMar27 - Is that a guess? A prediction? A rumor? Or late-breaking news?

Well, it looks as though the source realGM used was wrong. If you check back to the site of origin, I think you'll see it's nothing more than a rumor posted by some self-proclaimed sports expert on his own blog. Comments subsequent to the posting call him out on it and it's pretty much discredited. The guy didn't even have Jerry Buss on the correct side of the Pacific Ocean at the time this stuff was supposed to be happening...

Free agent forward Lamar Odom will return to the Los Angeles Lakers, an NBA source said Thursday.

Odom will sign a four-year contract, with the fourth year at the team option, the source said. One source with knowledge of the talks told ESPN.com the four-year deal is worth $33 million if the Lakers exercise the final year of the contract.
Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak declined comment and Odom's agent, Jeff Schwartz, did not immediately return a voice mail.
Odom's signing was the most significant free agent move left to play out this summer, as it restores a pivotal piece to the Lakers' championship team. The versatile, 6-foot-9 Odom averaged 11.3 points and 8.2 rebounds during the regular season and 12.3 points and 9.1 rebounds during the playoffs, despite injuring his back in a fall during the Western Conference semifinals against Houston.
Odom's destination for the 2009-10 season had remained in doubt after the Lakers pulled an initial offer of a reported $27 million guaranteed over three years off the table. As the other franchises with significant salary cap space spent their money elsewhere, the Miami Heat emerged as a serious contender for Odom's services. On Tuesday, the Portland Trail Blazers also got into the mix, offering a five-year, $40 million deal, according to a source close to Odom.
With Dwyane Wade publicly lobbying for Odom to rejoin him in South Beach, the Heat offered a deal worth up to $34 million over five years. The fact that Odom didn't jump at it despite the cooled tone of negotiations with the Lakers indicated his desire to return to Los Angeles, and the longer the saga dragged out the greater the chances seemed that he would be back.
With Odom back in the fold the Lakers would have their top five scorers and top four rebounders from the 2009 championship on the roster to begin the title defense. The only significant loss is forward Trevor Ariza, who left to sign a contract with the Houston Rockets after the Lakers signed former Rocket Ron Artest.
