Jason Williams retiring

Although the team grew up faster than he did, he sure was a joy to watch. The elbow pass will always be one of my favorite memories from a time when everyone was talking about the Kings. Glad that he matured over the years and was able to contribute on some good teams.

I think he matured a little too much. Hubie messed with his game a lot. I think his game needed to be toned down a bit, not all the way. He essentially erased the part of his game that made him great to begin with. The dude is the main reason I became a kings fan when I saw his stuff on Inside Stuff back in early '99. Damn I was in the 8th grade. Those were the days.

Long live those Kings.

He is truely an inspirational player! Miss him and that team, they made me proud to call myself a Kings fan.

Look at my screen name....That's all you need to know about me.

Jason Williams is my favorite basketball player and athlete, EVER. I'm just 23 years old....Jason Williams inspired me to pick up a basketball (and sports for that matter) at age 11....I have countless memories and times that I cherish, thanks to J-Will.

I remember back during his three years here....He'd pull off another amazing pass, shot, or dribble move....As soon as the commercial break would hit, I'd sprint out to my driveway and emulate the moves. And after years of wanting to pull off the elbow pass in a game, I was able to do so in a pick-up game up at Sac State back when I was 19. I've never felt such elation on the basketball court. I felt like I finally was able to thank Jason for being the reason I fell in love with sports(Oh yeah, my teammate actually made his layup, unlike Raef Lafrentz haha).

As a 21 year old when he retired in 2008 due to the complications of his wifes' pregnancy, I have no problem admitting that I cried. Just like I cried as a 13 year old when Petrie traded him to the Grizzlies for Bibby.

Today though, I'm not. I feel like Jason has done everything he could despite his knee ailments. I always hoped he'd return for at least one season here to Sacramento, but with the impending relocation, this seems only fitting.

Thank you Jason. For everything.

Oh J-Will. I'll never forget the first time I saw the Kings play in the pre-season against the Warriors right after the lockout. After a full court baseball pass to Webber, followed by a thunder jam, my dad turned to me and said "Who are these kids?!" Great memories.

And now, here's a little shameless YouTube promotion. Half a million hits and counting, baby!!

Ahhh thanks for the memories.

The one and only. If you love King's basketball you've got to love J-Will.
My all time favorite basketball player. Thanks for all the great memories, white chocolate.

It's too bad Jason let his emotions and Herbal habit get the best of him. At the end of his last season here he went on TV and said he didn't know what the Kings wanted from him and said maybe he should be traded. He got his wish. It was sad. He was never the same on any other team. There was so much excitement when he was here with his passing skills.

I watched J. Will play in college. He was a special talent, and was compared to Pistol Pete many times. My favorite memory will always be the night he froze Gary Payton and went right by him for a layup. Payton never even moved. He just stood there with a smile on his face. J. Will's temper was his worse enemy. He could be a very unpleasant person at times, which I witnessed up close and personal. I always felt he should have had a greater career than he did.

It could be argued that he almost singlehandedly put the Kings on the map. It seemed as though he was on the ESPN highlight reel almost every night. I wish him nothing but the best, and he'll be missed.

I still have the VHS tape the Kings sent out after drafting him.

He went to being one of the most efficient guards in terms of Assist to turnover ratio under Hubie didnt he?

The haters will always say he was taken before pierce and dirk but if we had our time again i still would be pulling for us to take j will. You cant put a price on the excitement he brought to the League and Arco.

Im all for us retiring his jersey, perhaps another way the maloofs can mend the bridges with the fans if they decide to stay

I think we all love and appreciate what J-Will brought to this team and his style of play certainly help put the team on the map but retiring his jersey is a little bit too much. If you retire J-Will's jersey then you have to consider retiring jerseys of Bibby, Christie, Peja and B-Jax!

By all means appreciate what he has done in his time here but retiring someone's jersey is a pretty big deal and there should only be select few that should get that honor. Don't think J-Will's contribution in 3 years in Sacramento was so "off the charts" to have his jersey retired.

I don't care about assist to turnover ratio. He wasn't the same player. He wasn't the player that made him a threat. He became just another guard in this league. That honestly really ticked me off and as his career unwinded I literally hated watching him play.

....I always get confused at about 1:51 where the audio doesn't really match up with the video. Marv Albert seems to be calling a three pointer but J-Will is actually making one of his most memorable passes ever to Corliss Williamson.

I didn't have the audio for that clip so I threw in a random sound bite. Also, it's Kevin Harlem, not Marv Albert.

The rumor at the time was that the Kings thought they could get Williams in the second round, because of his past history in college. He was on his third college at Flordia when he was permanently suspended. This was after a couple of other suspensions because of drug violations. As a result, he was suspossedly droping like a rock in the mock drafts.

The rumor continues, that Petrie got wind of Jerry West being very high on Williams, and was thinking of taking him when the Lakers turn came at the bottom of the first round. It wouldn't have been the first time West took a player with a troubled past in college. So Petrie took, what at the time was considered a reach.

You have to agree that J. Will would have fit in with the Lakers at the time, and might have been the second coming of showtime.

Just went through my archive. I found video of the first regular season game from the lockout season. It's mostly highlights of J-Will, but still very entertaining. If you don't get nostalgic watching the video, then you don't like Kings basketball. The video is currently being uploaded to YouTube.

Jason is retiring? It's official. I am no longer merely old...

And yet I can still remember the excitement of watching his passes - either right or target or rocketing into the third row. Either way, it was KINGS basketball and it brought us to life.

Good luck, J-Will.
