I have never felt the need to kick someone when he's down. And I abhor making fun of someone. Thats what bullies do. Or people lacking self esteem, who can only feel good about themselves by putting someone else down. Its one thing to be critical of how someone is playing. Its quite another to make fun of how someone breathes or how they look. Especially when you would never have the guts to say it to their face.
Now having said all that. I think Thompson is playing terrible right now. I don't know why, but its not because he doesn't have talent. Martin is playing terrible right now, and he certainly has talent. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Its whats between your ears that makes you a good player. And, I'm not talking about intelligence. Ben Wallace was a very good player, and I doubt he'll ever win the Einstein award.
Thompson has a college degree from a pretty good academic school. He's also pretty well spoken. Not a surprise since he wants a future in broadcasting. My point is, he's not stupid. He's no more stupid than a hitter in baseball that goes into a slump and can't hit a lick. I do know something about that. Or the golfer that suddenly starts shanking everything. So he's in a slump. A bad one. And then you have to add that he's not a finished product by any means. So he has nothing to fall back on. No previous experience. So he's floundering. And its hard to watch.
So he's easy to beat up on right now. Just like Beno was last year. Or like Martin is right now. But he hasn't been a bad player all year. Maybe because I watch so much college basketball I'm used to looking at the big picture and try not to have kneejerk reactions. And trust me, is difficult at times. The truth is that Thompson averaged a little over 16 points and almost 10 boards for the month of december. Nothing to sneeze at for a player in the first third of his second season.
But in this, what have you done lately society, he's the current, and probably deserving pinata. And thats fair. But I try to be critical from the point of view, that said player is going to overcome the problem. Maybe even grow from it. I'm not willing to just throw him in the trash can. Remember, one man's trash is another man's treasure. And thats happened a lot in the NBA.
