Jason Thompson

Thompson is in a major slump.

My biggest fear is if he never comes out of it. He lets every foul, every bad shot, every missed layup get to him. He is very mentally weak. I hope he snaps out of it, but I could see this one snowballing. More than it already has.

#33
Anyone notice that his footwork seems uncoordinated? He places his feet so far apart. He just seems somewhat goofy out there. (Especially when he chucks up one-palmed 'hook shots' that barely hit the front of the rim).

We need more bigman coaches!

Bring back Vlade, and Webber! Call up the Mailman! Use dark magic to summon the ghost of Wilt!

Look, I don't post here much, but I hate watching Jason Thompson play so much I had to log in and vent. The guy plain sucks and ruins any momentum that the team may have going their way. Whenever he gets minutes, he commits silly touch fouls that often result in and-1s. He complains about every single call; plus he isn't strong enough to match up against about 80% of the other bigs in the NBA. He misses so many open layups, too. If he is what we can call an "asset", please, let's make use of this "asset" by doing what we can by fooling other teams into a trade on the basis that he can improve -- which I highly doubt. As far as true assets go, the Kings have lucked out in this year's draft. Let's be clear: Casspi and Evans are the Kings' foundation.

Thompson can put on muscle and MAYBE add IQ (I highly that), but I think his skill set is pretty much what it's going to be for the rest of his career.

PS -- Does he ever close that mouth of his? It's annoying as heck. I find it offensive.

as a person with a big nose im insulted everytime i see him. its like he's deliberately trying to use up all of the oxygen. lol.....:D

but yes, he sucks... who was he trying to post up yesterday and airballed the shot like 5 feet from the basket? i cant remember but it was so funny. i think it was turiaf.. thompson sucks as a starting pf, he'd be a nice back... he's lucky that he's the only pf on the team... for some reason westphall likes to punish hawes by putting brockman or may in the game for him. but thompson gets a free pass, its like reverse racism.

again, thompson sucks... hawes is just weak, he has game and we all know it. thompson is scrappy sometimes and crappy the rest...

I have never felt the need to kick someone when he's down. And I abhor making fun of someone. Thats what bullies do. Or people lacking self esteem, who can only feel good about themselves by putting someone else down. Its one thing to be critical of how someone is playing. Its quite another to make fun of how someone breathes or how they look. Especially when you would never have the guts to say it to their face.

Now having said all that. I think Thompson is playing terrible right now. I don't know why, but its not because he doesn't have talent. Martin is playing terrible right now, and he certainly has talent. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Its whats between your ears that makes you a good player. And, I'm not talking about intelligence. Ben Wallace was a very good player, and I doubt he'll ever win the Einstein award.

Thompson has a college degree from a pretty good academic school. He's also pretty well spoken. Not a surprise since he wants a future in broadcasting. My point is, he's not stupid. He's no more stupid than a hitter in baseball that goes into a slump and can't hit a lick. I do know something about that. Or the golfer that suddenly starts shanking everything. So he's in a slump. A bad one. And then you have to add that he's not a finished product by any means. So he has nothing to fall back on. No previous experience. So he's floundering. And its hard to watch.

So he's easy to beat up on right now. Just like Beno was last year. Or like Martin is right now. But he hasn't been a bad player all year. Maybe because I watch so much college basketball I'm used to looking at the big picture and try not to have kneejerk reactions. And trust me, is difficult at times. The truth is that Thompson averaged a little over 16 points and almost 10 boards for the month of december. Nothing to sneeze at for a player in the first third of his second season.

But in this, what have you done lately society, he's the current, and probably deserving pinata. And thats fair. But I try to be critical from the point of view, that said player is going to overcome the problem. Maybe even grow from it. I'm not willing to just throw him in the trash can. Remember, one man's trash is another man's treasure. And thats happened a lot in the NBA.

Offensive numbers? Fine. Remember the intangibles - how much does a player complain? How much does that complaining pee off paying fans? You don't want to pay $100 for tickets to see a 6 year old throwing a temper tantrum on the floor, game in and game out. I am hardly exaggerating with Jason. It is a slap in the face to paying fans such as myself. He is making millions of dollars; why the hell does to have to be a complainer?? Get over it. Don't give me that 'he just cares so much about getting better'. It is absolutely atrocious. Sometimes it's made me embarrassed to be a Kings fan. Sometimes with him it's like watching a middle school game with a pouting player. No excuse for that, I don't care how many college degrees he has.

NOTE: Posts about Thompson's play, attittude, etc. are cool. Posts about his breathing, his looks, etc. - especially when it's clearly a personal attack - are NOT cool.

It strikes me that your throwing a tantrum. You need to get a life if your going to get that upset. I mean do watch other teams in the NBA. There are players that throw much bigger tantrums, as you call it, than Thompson. Most of the time Thompson isn't even talking to the ref, he's just having an emotional reaction to what he just did. . If you took the time to notice, he's been making an effort to not react.

Look, he dug himself a hole with the ref's last year. So now he's still paying a price for it. In the Warrior game on one play Turiaf spun to the basket. Thompson trying not to foul him actually tried to get out of the way. Turiaf went into the air with his right hand and shoved Thompson backwards with his left hand. They called a foul on Thompson. Now you can be as sanctimonious as you want. But I doubt you would have been a happy camper with a smile on your face if you were Thompson.

Now maybe your idea of helping someone change thier habits is to beat the hell out of him. Wouldn't work with me, I know, because it didn't work with me. So if thats your mentality, then we have nothing to talk about. And by the way. I was a season ticket holder for more years than I can remember. And I paid good money to watch players much worse than Thompson drag their butts up and down the court.

I believe the only solution for JT is to slow down with everything and if he does he would probably perform better but not good enough to start in the NBA. He cannot use his hands well when he moves quickly - he fouls, he loses dribbles, he misses the easiest of shots, he passes poorly. I hope its curable, coachable but I'm not sure it is, certainly not enough to allow him to start in the NBA. Even in his 20/10 performances he had these problems. My observations. Hope I'm wrong.

Ummmm, no, I don't think so. I think it was more of a suggestion. Sort of like, calm down, and don't get your panties in an uproar over a basketball player. I'm suggesting that your applying a lot of negative emotion to something that suspossed to be entertaining and enjoyable. You seem to have a lot of anger over something you can't control. Which makes it wasted energy. Your certainly entitled to feel anyway you want. I just hate to see people get that upset over a sporting event, or a particular player.

Now if we were talking politics, well thats another story...

As bad as Jason's been the past few games, he is still our best frontcourt player (which isn't saying much). We really do have one of the worse frontcourts in the league. It's an area that Petrie will need to make his #1 priority. Jason will eventually make a good backup power forward because of his height, and hustle. If he wants to to be starting material, he needs to learn to play smarter, and be more skilled, and at least develop a good consistent jumpshot that he can rely on.

You telling another member to get a life and not take this so seriously is laughable. You patrol this board as though you are the resident enforcer. It seems to me by reading some of your posts that if someone dare make a statement that you disagree with, your answer is to post a snide or condescending remark, whether conscious or not. Maybe you are just that arrogent. Maybe you should be the one to get a life and not take things so seriously. As far as your suggestion to focus energy on things more important in life than sports, I will counter with this: Yes there are far greater things in life to focus one's anger/energy on. But that is the great thing about sports, it allows you get away from the more serious, upseting things in life. I think that is why many people do take sports a little too seriously. You become invested in something to take you away from the harsh realities of world for a couple hours. If you didn't care you wouldn't have damn near 5,000 posts. I myself have been guilty of taking sports far to seriously, but you know what, who cares? If someone wants to do that then let them. Nothing he said was too over the top or "tantrum" like anways IMO. Now if you'll excuse me I need to go get my panties un-bunched.

getting away from the pissing contest for a second, I sure hope that JT starts to get back on track. There was a time when he was playing among the top 20 or so bigs of the league, right now, you'd be hard pressed to find 20 players struggling more than him.

I just had someone tell me that I was arrogant and condescending. The two things that I despise most in people. The last thing I want to be is one of those people that fall into that catagory. I've always felt that there's a difference between arrogance, condescension, and having passion for what you believe in. If I've crossed that line, then I'm truely sorry. One of the problems with the written word is that there's no inflection of feeling. Therefore it can be misunderstood.

There are a lot of new posters on this fourm. Its great that interest in the Kings seems to be renewed. But there's also a lot of anger and what I call hateful things being posted. A lot of name calling of players. Making fun of how they look or breathe. Someone suggested that someone should put an apple in Thompson's mouth. Creating an image of a roasted pig on the table. I not only don't find those things funny, I don't understand that mentality. If that makes me arrogant or condescending, then so be it.

I know that several posters have left the fourm because of current environment. That thought has occured to me. But at the same time I'm amused by the image created of me, flying in my little plane patroling the fourm from above, just waiting to dive down and strafe an unsuspecting poster. I think I'll just go back to my college basketball thread and the draft thread.

Valid point that written word can often be misinterpreted as something that it is not. So if I was off base then I apologize. I do agree that many posters have gone over the line with the personal attacks on JT and that is not called for, and I have no problem with setting people straight who stoop to that level. I am perfectly ok with someone being upset by his inability to finish point blank shots or his propensity for whining, but to go any further is not called for.

Give Him a break....

I might be new but a big fan of My Kings, and just want to say that you guys that rag on him all the time, just remember he is on his second season on what was a horrible team last year. He did started the team this year on a high, but the league adjusted to his play. He still has room to grow for being a sophomore, but he still has energy and hustle, all be it alittle too much of energy to control. Just let him develop his limited post game for this year, and I still have confidence in him that he will turn out to be a 15 and 10 guy. :)

Quite all right. Sometimes I need to rethink my position on things. And, I try to be open to someone else's ideas. At times its hard not to attack in kind, and I have to remind myself to be careful lest I become what I abhor. Anyway, were good! And welcome aboard..
