It's Giants Season!!! (The Official SF Giants Thread)

One would think Morris would make good trade bait, but I think we could use his veteran presence for one more year. All those guys I mentioned do not have that much experience in their current role and can benefit from Morris's presence.
Keep in mind I posted this well before yesterday's complete game. And I couldn't feel stronger about my point. Matty Mo has been our stopper in virtually every start he has made. He's pitching better than what we expected when we signed him - maybe even to prove to everyone wrong about last year.

When you have this much talent you don't just throw it away because you can, IMO. You exercise patience until every team is chopping at the bit to make a deal with you. 'Till you can get the deal you want. Not to mention it depends heavily on what view your organization has on the year. I think we have been in the re-tool-on-the-fly phase ever since our letdown in the Dusty Baker years. We signed Filipe Alou and a bunch of veterans to make some final runs at the series where Barry Bonds was the centerpiece. We failed, and so now in the Bruce Bochy years we are going to rebuild through youth. This is why I think we should trade a Randy Winn, who also has inflated value, and let the OF kids fight for the open spots. Lewis and Ortmeier are battling, and one will rise above the other. If they both flop then we have flexibility - Shierholtz and Timpner in AAA.

Does that mean I don't think we can make a run at the pennant this year? Sure we can, but a lot of things have to fall in place for that to realistically happen. What we should hope for IMO is that the bats in our lineup can get us to the playoffs so our youth can get a taste of the future. What I do not want to see, is Sabean throw away pitching talent for some useless bat, like he has done before.

Morris and Zito are training our young pitching.
Roberts and Winn are training our young outfielders.
Omar and Ray are training Kevin Frandsen (since Niekro flopped).

Miguel Cabrera is available in free agency after this year so maybe we can use some of our $35 million to ink him in the offseason. What a great young centerpiece he will make.

I know we have Durham but maybe we can find a trade to get rid of Ray-Ray and bring in Luis Castillo who is a free agent. Or maybe we try to get a different Minnesota Twin in Torii Hunter.

Francisco Cordero is returning to his closing form that he had in Texas. Maybe we could snag him up in the offseason.

My point is that the free agent market is bright in the next couple years when we will have large amounts of cash to work with. So I strongly feel that we should just develop talent this year. I think Morris is key to said development and I don't think we should trade him until next year - when Sanchez is ready.

Who's tradeable: Winn, Durham, Feliz, Ortiz. Get whatever we can for those guys and prep for the free agent market.

If the Giants could get Miggy Cabrera, I would be the happiest person on the face of this planet.

My god what a great young player he is.

.............Timmah!

Franchise - Woot!

Tim Lincecum is now 2-0 and is about to break his ERA below 3.00.

His upcoming schedule:

5/29 @ NY Mets
6/3 @ Philly
6/8 vs. Oakland
6/13 vs. Toronto
6/19 @ Milluakee

He will not matchup against either Boston or the Yankees which I'm sure would've been fun to watch. Cain on the other hand will face both those teams. So at least we get to showcase one of our phenoms.

Zito, Cain, Morris are lined up to start @ Boston.
Cain, Morris, Lowry are lined up to start at home vs. the Yankees.

June should be exciting.

The Giants lost the last two because of defensive letdowns. A smallball team with great pitching absolutely cannot afford to have defensive letdowns. Freddie has been great, but he's been playing everyday. Now is the time to let him chill on the bench, and start Ortmeier for a little while.

Right now this team is lingering around .500. Aurilia, Sweeney and Roberts need to hit better. Vizquel, Feliz and Durham have just started hitting a little bit better, but they need to keep improving. Bonds is now back. I expect us to score some more runs in the near future.

Again, I pray that Sabean doesn't get an ichy-trigger-finger because of fan pressure.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I almost forgot. We lost yesterday because the UMP made an absolutely terrible call. Strike three in the 8th inning I believe was not called and turned into a rally-starting RBI double. It is amazing how one bad call can change the whole game.

I love Tim Lincecum.

I hate Armando Benitez.

And I 100% hope that Jose Reyes gets a fastball straight to the head tomorrow.

Prancing around like that...I wanted Mando (or any other Giant) to take him out when they were celebrating.

I could care less about the dugout, it was the prancing down the line in front of the entire team that got me.

You dont show up the other team, especially right in their face.

Plunk the punk.

That was one of the best games of the year. Zito more than earned his money in that start. Aurilia finally snapped out of it. Taschner and Hennessey locking down the 8th and 9th. Oh yeah baby. Keep it rollin'!

NEW YORK -- The San Francisco Giants traded struggling closer Armando Benitez to the Florida Marlins for reliever Randy Messenger on Thursday night.
Benitez was not in the clubhouse after the Giants' 4-2 loss and his locker was completely cleaned out.
"Maybe Elvis has left the building," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
Benitez was 0-3 with nine saves in 11 chances and a 4.67 ERA. His final game for the Giants was Tuesday night, when he balked twice in the 12th inning of a 5-4 loss to the New York Mets.
On his last pitch for San Francisco, he gave up a game-ending home run to Carlos Delgado.
Benitez is owed $5,066,666 from the remainder of his $7.6 million salary this year, of which Florida will pay $333,333 and San Francisco will pay $4,733,333.
The 34-year-old Benitez returns to Florida, where he set a team record with a career-high 47 saves in 2004. That was his only season with the Marlins, and he signed with the Giants as a free agent after that season.
A hard thrower, Benitez is prone to getting excitable on the mound. He has 289 saves in a major league career that began in 1994, but has had particular trouble in the postseason.
Last week, he caused himself trouble by blaming San Francisco hitters for not scoring enough runs.
Earlier Thursday, on his weekly KNBR radio program, Giants general manager Brian Sabean said the team needed to fix the bullpen.
"We've got to the point where we are going to have to do something, and hopefully within the next 24 or 48 hours we'll resolve it internally or externally," he said. "Right now we are exploring options."
Messenger was 1-1 with a 2.66 ERA going into the Marlins' game at Milwaukee. He is making the major league minimum of $380,000 this season.
In three seasons, the 25-year-old righty is 3-8 with a 4.98 ERA in 111 relief appearances.

Messenger looks like a crazy man on the mound!

Talk about an intimidating presence with the huge size and the cap pulled down to his eyelids.

And a nice fastball to go with it.

Yeah. He looks like he's still raw. I wanted to see him throw the slider as a strikeout pitch but he stayed with the fastball. He threw one beautiful curve too.

What a game. Finally some bad refereeing goes our way. Not that it would've mattered much. The guys were just rallied up tonight.

Taschner is awful.

At this point we should just give a flyer to Erick Threets down in AAA...He's a lefty who can hit triple digits, yet has pretty bad, albeit improving, control.

Why not?

You don't make rash moves until after your emotions are done running rampant (with the exception of Benitez). I wanted this win too. Taschner left that pitch too much over the plate. Benjie was pissed the second Howard made contact. And then keeping Correia in for the 9th was stupid -- almost as stupid as the garbage home run Victorino hit. The truth is, this loss goes for Timmy. He made a few mistakes and we got burned. Today is all part of the learning curve for these kids.

Taschner's not a kid though...He's 28.

If we're gonna keep a mediocre lefty "kid" in the bullpen, we may as well go with the 100mph throwing intimidating, 6'6, 26 year old "kid" from Fresno.

At least he'd be fun to watch!

I understand where you are coming from, but I'm not giving up on Taschner. And I call him a kid because he only has 70 game appearances. He needs to learn where he can throw the ball to certain players. That will only come with time. I know Taschner is 29, but he still has upside due to the fact that he just doesn't have much Major League experience. If he blows it a couple more times then can him, but give him a shot until that moment.

Threets lacks command. He gives up way too many walks. I suspect he will be at AAA until he gains command. And I've got to believe that Sanchez is next on the lefty picking order.

I'd get rid of Kline and Chulk and bring up Sanchez and either Giese or Misch.

Giese: 30.2 IP, 24 H, 7 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 29 K, 2.05 ERA

Misch: 39.1 IP, 29 H, 11 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 41 K, 2.52 ERA

;)

I think Tasch has been given enough chances.

He was good in his cup-o-coffee in 05.

He was completely terrible all of last year.

And he just hasn't shown enough improvement this year...He's not worth a spot in our bullpen, especially #1 lefty, and it's time to move on.

And on the note of Threets, I just realized Im horribly angered at Giants management...The team tried to convert him to a starter (WTF?) and it bombed completely...Im not sure how he's bounced back in relief, but hes thrown only 18 innings this year...And that's after he was lights out in the hitter-happy PCL last year...What in the world was happening there?

So maybe not Threets...But anyone but Taschner.

Kevin Correia - new whipping boy.

In one road trip we have discovered the inconsistency of Correia and Taschner. We should reduce their roles and try out someone new.

Messenger looked good.

Great work out there Hennessy...I think Im on the newly started by me "Messenger for Closer" Bandwagon...Who wants to join?

Man, how I wanted that game to go some more innings!!!

That was a wild loss.

And at this point it doesnt even bother me...It makes me realize our offense really is that freaking terrible!
