It IS Skinner (title edited)

Sampson/Garcia as our two shot-blockers. ;)

What about Bibby?! The guy is a shot blocking machine!

Remember that game where he got 5 blocks? Yeah ... me neither. :D

That's real bad when Garcia is your shotblocker ... and he's on the bench. Ouch!

Then why pick up potopenko if we're not going to use him as back up center??

Think the deal was about Monia. We'll likely "use" Vitaly about the same way we used Brian.

I remember I was really really high on monia comming out that year

everyone though he was a lock go to #11 to Utah, but he didnt

I remember being in shock praying he would continue falling to us..

I'm just glad to see that one of the Philly three was "flexible" enough to turn into Vitaly Potapenko.

woot.

This really seems like the kind of deal you make when you're not very worried about the playoffs this year and are thinking two and three years down the line. Size will have to be addressed in the offseason, and I still have to wonder whether this is an early sign of the end of the Bonzi Wells era in Sacramento or just insurance in case the Kings can't get Bonzi to stay.

I disagree with everyone hating on garcias shot blocking ability...the man is lenghty......his arms are like.....yea..well they are long

Deal was mainly about Monia, indeed.
And what about Wells? If Petrie re-signs Gawen in the off-season, Monia has to be the fifth swingman in a four-swingman rotation.

I'm still hoping that we'll be able to S&T Wells in the off-season, packaged with Thomas and Hart for a star/superstar PF.

Don't sleep on Monia. The kid is very skilled. He is aslo very young and will only get better. I believe the over used word would be "upside".

Think you are misunderstanding. Garcia is an excellent shotblocking swingman type. But that doesn't make him a shotblocker of the type that you need to anchor your defense. Means he'll get surprise blocks, fun blocks, the occassional block on the perimeter. But 6'7" Cisco Garcia isn't and can't shut down a lane to opposing big men and penetrators. And so while its cool he blocks shots, its very very bad that he is the BEST shotblocker on the team.

Well, like I've said, that's not a good possibility for Bonzi staying, thus Monia would have the spot.

alright, i understand the monia part....that all but seals bonzis departure....

what i dont understand is the kings apparent disdain for a physical, defensive presence in the middle...its like theyre bound and determined to not have or play a guy like that....

You just caught onto that huh? :p

Yep. A major MAJOR question about the current regime. You have to wonder sometimes, do they actually get it?

I think Petrie understands the team's needs more than we do. Attaining a talented 7 foot young shot blocker is easier said than done.

There is no misunderstanding.

I understand our interior defense is pathetic, and that a shotblocker is needed. I see garcia blocking shots as an upside to his position.

I never thought I'd see the day when Brian Skinner was on the "1" end of a "2-for-1" deal...hey, whatever's clever....I guess?

Definately an upside to his position but no matter how many swats he gets, players still aren't going to be scared to drive the lane.

The reason why is that the Maloofs needed to wring out the money from the remaining Ukrainian and Russian residents in Sac. Why not go for this? Makes perfect sense.

You know what? I don't.

People treat the business side of basketball like its magic. Its not. Being able to assess talent? Yeah, maybe. Being able to assess a team's needs? Hardly. Blantantly obvious to even a casual fan. And Geoff is basically just a fan up in his office. A fan with power over the roster, but nothing else. No magic.

The question isn't just about now. And its not just about Geoff (Rick as well -- Geoff has traded for or signed Keon, Tag, Skinner but none lasted more than a year). Long time trend.

Oh god, here we go again. Brick knows better than Petrie, where have I heard this before?

It's not like Skinner was very good defensively. He blocked some shots, but he was also not a good one-on-one defender and gave up a ton of size to centers. I don't see how this is a defensive downgrade.

I'm guessing it's juuuuuust a tad easier to play armchair GM than to be an actual GM. But some people around these parts don't seem to get that.

Also, the last time we had this argument you were saying Petrie would never move Peja because of his supposed fondness, like a son, blah blah blah. Who knows more, Brick, you or Petrie?

nevermind...

Yep, not much of a salary dump. Really think its just about moving a seldom-used piece for an acceptable seldom-used repacement and then getting a spare kid to look at in the process. When you're rebuilding, stacking up young guys with some potetnial is always a good thing, and the fact that he's supposedly defensive minded fits with what we want to do as well.
