Is it time to question mental toughness?

In any sport that is competative you need mental toughness to deal with pain, stress, fatigue, etc. It is clear that some bad calls have turned our season around. I do NOT blame the refs for this one. They made some bad calls, we lost some tough games. That does NOT mean we cant suck it up and play like we know we can against Chicago or New Jersey. I am questioning their mental toughness. What has happened to this season... right now, we wouldnt even make it out of the first round, let alone win a game in the playoffs the way weve responded to some bad calls. I can understand they may be frustrated, tired, sore, and emotionally drained but you play in the NBA and you for one better have some mental toughness to deal with little bumps in the road like this. The kings should have destroyed Chicago and New Jersey, Dallas, Seattle without Allen after the bad call against Pheonix. What does it show the world when we keep losing to sub-par teams? I give respect to Chicago, but cmon... New Jersey? and a Nash-less Dallas beat us at our own game? Maybe we are getting older but that should make them more mentally strong. I hope this turn of events corrects itself and this team can regroup and figure out what is important and what needs to be forgotten and focus on catching Pheonix and moving through the playoffs. I am not blaming anyone or bashing the team or even stating problems or "shouldve's". What happenend is done and we, as well as the players must move on. Thats all.

GO KINGS!!

Come on - Vlade is gone, DC is gone, Pedja did not play - nobody else is soft so that is not an issue

Bibby_Is_Clutch, I have no idea what should be questioned, maybe mental toughness is as good as anything. But, we all know that there are many things wrong with this team, not the least of which is their inability or refusal to play defense. No problem when you can outscore everyone. But, when your shots stop falling, as evidenced by our whopping 85 score, you had better find a way to keep the other team from scoring as well.

Thank God for the all-star break. And, as slighted as some have felt, thank God for the fact that no Kings will be taking part in the all-star weekend.

Recover.....recouperate....renew!! Then, come back after the all-star break and.....

Kick some NBA booty!!

we just suck. end of story. WE SUCK! i hope we can go back to how we used to play. the all star break is much needed.

I think this team is mentally tougher than it has ever been (not because of personnel as much as fighting through tough times and gaining experience). However, they have also gone through a lot of heartbreak, and even the most mentally tough person struggles if his heart is broken enough times. I expect this team to bounce back and play well again, I'm just not sure if they have enough in them to carry them through the entire playoffs.

New Jersey is a good team after Kidd's recovery and VC's arrival. I would say none of the following 10 games is easy, except vs Hawks at home. You can't assume you will get a W by stepping on the court.

SaCKingS24, you are a fan after my own heart ....

I feel you brudda ..... share the misery.

For some reason I felt like this the end of last year. Another thing I get sick of hearing, that somebody on the opposing team has a "Carrer High" in some catogory. I'm not going to give up on them. Lets hope for better things after the break. Brad was not automatic tonight. Maybe after he kills something he'll be his old self.

Does that mean ...

Yea Al, it seems its every Game. I'm really starting to buy into "Defence makes champions" thing now. We need alot more of it.

what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. if they keep playing like this they will be dead and gone by the time the playoffs arrive.

how would he help from the sidelines? isn't he still suspended?

um not right now playa, for next season. i dont think any trades are gonna be made until next season, but i would hope for a trade to get Pierce. i loved him in Kansas and i still think hes awesome. Although stern did say if Pacers make the playoffs he would think about letting Artest come back.

you know what we need? RON ARTEST! only if u guys knew.

Maybe we can get Dennis Rodman, Danny Fortson, Spreewell and a few other head cases out there. Artest is not the answer. Spreewell would choke Adleman and Artest would be in the stands either selling his new album or chasing Slamson to throwdown. Sorry 24 can't agree. Oh... I forgot, Spree would spend more time looking for food to feed his family

ahhh, why do i even try. we lack defense! thats all im going to say, you put the pieces together. just remember next year wherever artest goes/stays i will be here to rub it in your face when he has a standout year.

You know who I'd like to see, as much as I like Brad as player.......Theo Ratlif, not much of a offensive guy, But that guy can block shots and is a stud in the paint.

O.K. I'm ready to take the shots on this one..........

artest would be sweet if we could trade mobley for him.... maybe mobley and tag for artest and some scrub..... we couldnt lose with that kind of team.

We can't trade Mobley with any other King because he was acquired recently. Can only move him alone.

Theo is the world's most one dimensional player -- hardly a stud inside. Crappy rebounder, no offensive game at all. if Tag can't get minutes for us, doubt Theo could either.

Im not so much questioning their mental toughness as I am questioning their emotional output. I know this team has a lot of mental toughness to deal with what they have over the years with injury's and dissapointment but I do feel the whole attitude and as it looks now, the chemistry changed since these bad calls were issued and fines and suspension were given. I guess what I want them to do is exactly what I bolded in your response. They just need to forget about it, recover, regroup and come out of the all star break as the best team in the division or even conference. They, like us, are letting these bad calls and 'down' times get to us. I just dont understand why Ive seen this team fall apart lately at the end of games where last year they used to be the best 4th quarter team and earlier this year didnt let close ones slip away but over the past weeks they have. This team has been through a hell of a lot tougher stuff than this in past years so I guess it seems like something they should deal with easily, but they are human.

Either way I hope they come out of the All star break a new, refreshed team, and play well and prepare for the playoffs. We simply need to play Kings Basketball.

Mental toughness is the issue and will continue to be the weakness of this TEAM. BUT you cannot keep making excuses and ignoring the facts.Like with peja how do you go from 24+points per game and probably would have been more if other circumstances didn't hinder his play towards the end of the season He led the league in Free throw percentage shot an amazing high FGP all of this considering he was doing this all from the outside, 6 Rebounds per game and a early season candidate for MVP of the year. He was second TEAM ALL NBA finished second in MVP voting behind kevin garnett and was getting better and better as the season went on The TEAM had the best record in the league by this time last year, the offense was praised as a HOOP PHENOMENON those magazine people were raving how the kings OFFENSE was poetry in motion and VLADE at one point during this time was averaging nearly a triple double over a 5 or 6 game period, I mean he was playing like he was 20 and you can go back in the ARCHIVES and check the STATS,The TEAM was winning and having fun.

Not to blame it all on C-WEBB but his coming back had an effect on the whole TEAM, VLADE AND PEJA both were reduced roles after both playing so well before his return. Then all of sudden it was like Bench vlade and start Brad but no one was saying this before C-WEBB came back and Vlade was playing like a young dude averaging almost a triple double and the TEAM was winning. How would you feel if you already old and then you get rejuvenated to play basketball on a Big time level again and you are playing well and then your minutes and Role on the TEAM are put on the back burner in favor of a player coming off of a carreer ending injury. Then look at PEJA your playing at a MVP level almost the whole season. You are doing this in the same offense with Brad and vlade playing in the same sets the same system that right now CHRIS WEBBER is functioning with you in.Now C-webb takes control of the high post sets you starting now getting less shots the screens are not the same your scoring imput declines, you are now having mediocre games. The TEAM starts losing etc etc etc EARLY PLAYOFF EXIT.

This trend continues at the start of the season and up until now.Your shot attempts dwindle you are playing horrible. They don't consider you for all star consideration your game falls apart.I know I would feel way out having had that type of season ,you are a young player you reach that brand of success and then YOU have your fellow Team member and likewise fellow all star comes in talking about this is my TEAM I am this,I am that everyone must follow my rules, we need more HEART AND players like ME.You can be the best shooter in the world but if you are not like ME THEN YOU ARE WACK.How would you feel and I think all this was done because he felt Bad he got Booed and Peja was getting alot of props and he felt he had to come in and declare this is my TEAM. He did this at the expense of the TEAM he didn't care about PEJA BLOSSOMING as a young up incoming STAR,all he wanted was first declare himself the BEST on the TEAM and this has been his agenda from the time he came back last season and it was up until the all star selection of the coaches.

LOOK at how he has played since the all star selection process from when he didn't know who was going to be picked. He just knew he was going to Denver I just knew he was going. He gets snubbed and now all motivation has dropped he has know motivation right now and thsi what he was playing for up until that point. He has been playing for stats and personal glory. Now he's just going through the motions and nothing really to prove. He vibes off peja also to prove he is the best on the TEAM,But since PEJA has been AWOL he has no one to use as a measuring stick for motivation and he feeds off of this type of stuff.

PEJA on the other hand has his own ego and he was trying to elevate his own game.He felt last season he was stepping up his career he felt he was one of the top 10 players in the game. The legends and greats of the past were praising him people like magic johnson and even steve kerr went to sacramento and did and inteview with him on the court at the practice GYM raving about his game. These things will put a players mind on another level and How do you blame him for loosing his drive when he was at such a high level.

The kings have some real chemistry issues and Trading peja may be the solution.I mean you have cuttino mobley coming in here and all of sudden he's WEBB'S best friend and he is the vocal LEADER and he's the 3 point king on the TEAM ,we don't need peja anymore now.But does everyone remember when cuttino mobely tried to enter the 3 point contest a few years ago and bombed out first round, but peja ended up winning his second 3 point contest in row.If i were peja I would want to get out of town also, I mean what type of loyalty do the kings really have when you have your fellow TEAM MEMBER for 6 seasons saying he likes the scrubs and junk men on the TEAM and he is used to playing with players like that.Peja feels left out and the injury stuff is psychological you can see by the Body language. you got a dude in cuttino not even a all star calling the shots telling an all star all NBA second team peja what's up and what needs to be done.

Matt barnes and all them other dudes are cool but they have fallen prey to the hype. They are players that must must work hard for everything, they are not granted players in this league they are oppurtunistic players. They are playing like they have mistakes at freedom you don't see the hunger to stay in the league anymore, you see players believing there own little hype and cuttino mobley is a good role player and good 3rd or 4th guy,But he is not a prime time player or a player to depend on in CRUNCH TIME.He must adapt his game to be more of a role type of player and do more dirty little things the TEAM nedds.

The coaching staff must take intiative to assign everyone roles on the TEAM OR they may need to make some drastic personality changes for the good of the squad.Something must and will be done

Changes need to be made... either in the attitude of the team or in the personnel. I think the thought was that we'd be an offernsive juggernaut with the guys we have, but it's no good having a bunch of shooters and too few athletic players. When guys go cold from outside (happens often to us), we have absolutely no alternative in the paint.

Being one-dimensional makes us very easy to stop when the shots aren't falling. Add to that the fact that we will not play defense this year (haven't for a long time, don't see any reason why that would change) and I have a hard time believing anything other than another trade will get this club jump started. Never know what GP will do, but management may just wait and see what some rest during the All-Star break will do for us.

What's so frustrasting is that this team had every motivation to play for what with being shut out of the All-Star game. They should have played like they had something under their skin, but instead we come out and lose six of seven. I'm ready for this squad to step up to and overcome a challenge one of these days!!

Frustrating to have so much talent but to be falling so fast into mediocrity.

you're right VARIANT, we do need a change. the gel that used to be the centerpiece of the team has been demolished. vlades gone, as well as christie. something needs to be done. maybe the team needs a break. or it could be much deeper. maybe peja needs to go, maybe not. maybe webber needs to go, maybe not.
whatever needs to be done, i trust that gp or ra will make the right decision to correct the problem. i just hope this slide we are having will end soon. so we can get back to having fun on the court, start running that offense they were talking about last season. stop aruing with the refs and just start playing basketball.

that is an EXCELLENT point. EVERYONE needs to man up and play like they want to be champs. play some freaking D, get into the paint, REBOUND. this TEAM can do it if they try.

GO KINGS!

Nice Post....I agree with most of your thoughts.

I have said this many times before and it's appropriate to say it again...The team has tuned RA out and it's time for a change. I know that RA stresses defense, rebounding, etc, but when the message isn't received and apparently it's not being received then you need another voice to come in and say the same message. I'm not saying that they need to get rid of RA now, because a change in the middle of the season will only set this team back even more, but if the Kings don't make it out of the first round then I think a change will be in order. Yea, I know that RA's contract was just extended a year, but that doesn't give him as much job security as you would think. I believe that they gave him the one year extension more so to quash rumors of his future or lack thereof with the Kings and they didn't want a lame duck coach going into the playoffs.

That may play out that way, but Pat Riley, with an assistant coaching staff of Gregg Popovich, Jerry Sloan and Mike Tyson couldn't make these guys into a defensive or rebounding juggernaught. Nobody on the team other than Tag, who NEEDS to be on the floor if we stand pat, has ever, for any coach, been a stalwart in etiher area. First and foremost this is a personnel issue. Show me the great rebounder on our team who's not rebounding now. Show me the defensive stopper who quit stopping once he hit Sacto. Outside of Peja's boardwork, which may or may not be being caused by issues he's having, there is not a single core King who's rebounding/defensive ability is surprising or out of character this year. This is who they are and have always been.

Its actually more Petrie's fault than anything else -- we have built a team here around the Princeton high skill offensive concept -- passers and shooters first. But its just gone too far now. As is often the case high skill passers/shooters have a tendency to either be soft or unathletic, or both. And at this point we've piled up so much of those traits in our core players that we almost CAN'T be a top defensive or rebounding team. Chris is never going to be able to get off the floor fast enough to block large numbers of shots again, Brad is the world's shortest and least intimidating 7 footer -- plays closer to 6'8". Ditto for Darius as a 6'9" guy, except he plays at about 6'6". Peja shies away from anything that requires physical contact. Cat is undersized and offensive minded, Bibby is underquick and the same. None of those guys has EVER for ANYBODY demonstrated the traits we are looking to find more of (well, Webb was once a very good shotblocker, but physically that's not happening anymore).
