I'm Liking the Way Smart Thinks....

Kingster

Hall of Famer
From KHTK interview:

To create trust on the team - they must interact on a personal level off the court; not just see each other on the court. Then the player doesn't think he's not getting the ball because the other player is competing against him

On matchup play - let the players know ahead of the time what the deal is if he changes matchups.

On learning on the fly - actually use game time to teach something. For example, use the game to work on a match up zone.

So, he's seeing the problems trust/selfishness, players hurt feelings, little practice time, and he's coming up with the solutions to the problems.

Agree and can add after listening in:

Said very grateful for all he's learned over the years from Coach Knight, Coach Nellie, Coach Pop, seminar he went to by late Coach Daly.

Said Kings players will be expected to follow a set of team rules he'll have for everyone with no one favored over anyone else.

Said he likes the opportunity to coach in Sac not only because of teams potential but because he has home in Bay Area, where his family lives, and not too bad a communte on day off - like today.

Said he would like to see his team become more like a "family" so that even greater chemistry can be reached on the basketball floor.

Lastly, Coach Smart implied that his Kings may be playing more zone defense. He said since there's so little practice time they might put in on during live games just to work on it - assuming lead is safe.

Out of everything he said, I was glad to see the magic word - chemistry. It's what makes good teams great and it's what this young group of players really needs to develop. I think there's a potential for a lot of fun the rest of the year and I'm looking forward to seeing what changes Coach Smart is able to put into play.
