Suns assistant Marc Iavaroni is expected to nab a head coaching job next season, and he’s not opposed to having a job interview during these playoffs.

Iavaroni said if Phoenix has a break between playoff series and a team asks for an interview, he’ll do so. Five teams currently have openings: Charlotte, Indiana, Memphis, Sacramento and Seattle.

Iavaroni stressed, however, he has not been contacted by any team. He said his agent is talking to GMs and relaying the information to him.

“My goal as an assistant coach was to help a head coach get a championship,” Iavaroni said. “That’s the way I want to leave.”


I like the idea. He would utilize our players better(alot better then Muss that is for sure) thus increasing thier trade value.

There aren't tampering rules about that???

I don't think it's tampering, as long as:

1.) The team he's negotiating with is OUT of the playoffs (sounds dumb, but go with it)
2.) He is not offered the job during the playoffs
3.) Phoenix gives him permission to interview
4.) He is not absent from the team during an active playoff series for the reson of negotiation.

I think these are the rules, please someone correct me if it doesn't sound accurate...

I do not like the smell of this at all - does not seem like a classy thing for a guy to be saying in the midst of a potential championship run. I don't want to overreact but this takes away some "character points" in my book. I'm sure he could still be a fine NBA head coach, but I wish he had his eye on the ball right NOW. I like the idea that the guy running the show is a CLASS guy. This comment to the press seems just a tiny bit Larry Brownish to me

Actually I don't understand what the fuss about Iavaroni. Yes, he was integral part of Amare's development but that's about all his coaching achievements.

In part, I think it's the same thing you see with job applicants or members of the opposite sex -- this consensus develops that the one who is being pursued/claimed by others is necessarily desirable.

He starts being talked about as a candidate for one team, then before you know it we get this scene where he's like a rock star gesturing to the waiting groupies.

It does seem a bit much.

I have heard that rumor many times, and while it wouldn't surprise me, it definitley isn't a done deal. I would definitley like to see Iavaroni coaching us next year.

Well, Colangelo seems to think he can turn Toronto into the Phoenix of the East so it would seem likely that he would be interested in Ivaroni. Only problem is if he doesn't bring Steve Nash with him the "system" ain't gonna work.

no link unfortunately, but you only get link when deal is done. I'm in Toronto, so I'm just telling you what is rumour here (and those rumours that some of you heard), started from here.
It is known that Raptors GM and coach Mitchell were not on the same page, and Raptors departure from playoffs will just justify decission do dismiss Mitchell.
And from the people that come in contact with Colangelo, this rumor started out.

I don't think Iavaroni would have come out and said he would interview with teams during the playoffs if it were such a "done deal" for him to go to Toronto. If he already has his ticket he wouldn't need to say that.

There's speculation in Indy (Pacersdigest) that Mitchell will be heading there to replace Carlisle, leaving the vacancy in Tor.

I would be very surprised if Iavaroni is not a Raptors coach next season. I just get the feeling that Colangelo has been aiming for him ever since he took over.

Mitchell did a good job this year, his stock is high and he will get a very good deal from someone out there. That someone appears to be Indiana.

There is a bit of that Detroit Carlisle to Brown feel to the Raptors right now. Grass is always greener and al that, even with the award winning coach.

I am having a hard time seeing Rick take that Seattle job -- they are a mess, and may be moving within a year. They might very well want him, but might have to settle for taking Don Casey or some other more desperate party back instead.

I have a hard time seeing Petrie bring in Rick Carlisle. I think he's just way too similar to the recently redundant Eric Musselman. If I had to hazard a guess today, with the proviso that Petrie is looking for more than a stopgap coach, I would honestly have to give serious consideration to Scott Brooks.

Still have a hard time seeing that move given his empty resume and association with a failed regime here. One of the riskiest choices on board. Have no idea at all how you'd convince the Maloofs to give him more than a one year minimum test the waters type of deal.

I'm with you, I'm just happy for a change and someone who can LEAD the team and actually have control and a consistent game plan.

I really don't see Carlisle coaching the Kings. It's like repeating the same hiring mistake as last summer. None of the players who play for Carlisle like the guy. He's a control freak and players don't respond well to his style. It's not just Artest that had problems with him. There is a reason he keeps getting fired from good situations.
