Considering the amount of time he spends a day on craigslist the result isn't that impressive (basically 3/4 a full time job). Particularly since he dumped a 75 Bronco for a $9000 dime a dozen Porsche.

I've done similar things on eBay. I've started with a $25 book and stashed the earnings in Paypal, spent about four hours a day hunting down stuff that is uh... less than accurately represented, and flipped it for ten times what I paid for it. Start with something on your shelf, end with 900 bucks. It takes an extraordinary amount of search skills and screen time. Not always worth it.

It's easier to get to work.

He spent 5-6 hours every day for two years doing that? Yikes, he gets an F from me.

Let's say he averaged 5.5 hours a day at minimum wage.

If it was actually 7 days a week, he would earn $31,031 in two years.
If you said maybe it meant 5 days a week, he would still have earned $22,165 in two years.

More like he turned Dwight Howard into Jon Brockman. ;)

I'm sure he made some swappers happy, but what did he actually produce or contribute for those two years of work? Nothing.

Yeah that's what killed me about the Harvard Business School watch out line. If I had 5.5 hours to spend trading stuff online it would probably be stocks. Even though I'm a bit risk averse I think I could make more than 9 grand in 2 years with that kind of time sync and I went to one of the crappier schools across the river.

I think you guys are missing the jovial point of the article.
Well, it was somewhat amusing, but I wouldn't give this guy any kudos for what was an excellent timewaster. And then he doesn't even want the car he did all that work for. Hopefully he learned that some goals are bound to disappoint when you achieve them. ;)

I have an old water bottle I'm willing to trade...any takers? I will gladly exchange it for a set of unsharpened pencils, or a bmx.

He turned an old cell phone into a car. That's impressive. I understand that it might not have been cost-effective, but he still turned one hell of a profit. Assume the phone was worth $100, that's 90 times the original value. If I gave you $1000 and you gave me $90,000 back in two years, I'd be very happy. What changes the cost of the investment is the time he put into it. But still, that's pretty good performance.

Unfortunately that change becomes pretty significant even when calculated against minimum wage. The how he got there is kind of cool and exciting but in the end the fat kid working at Cinnabon eats better and can put gas in the car which he bought a year earlier.
