Houston to retire

Lets face it for all intents and purposed Houston has been retired for some time now. He jsut finly turned in the uniform and stoped cashing the checks...

Uh, sorry. I consider myself a reasonably good and honest guy, but you would have to shoot me to get me to walk away from $40 million. Twice. In the head. With hollowpoints. I'd be rolling out to practice in my wheelchair claiming I could still play.

As Brick stated... maybe a questionable choice finacial wise... basicly he had the contract, he could of just showed up, they wouldnt have played alot (if at all) he would get to watch free Knick games and collect the check :D

I heard about this...and I must say THANK YOU GOD...he should of done this along time ago...the wifey should of been on top of that a long time ago...its just a shame whats happen to his name...Allan Houston one of my favorite players of all time for his great play during his healthy years...its a shame what happened to him injury wise but it was time to walk away...money or not

Get paid to watch great bball, heck yea. I'd stay also.

It was likely a combination of him feeling bad, pressure from Isiah and everyone else in the front office, as well as an under-the-table buyout.

I think its ridiculous to say that since he was injured he's been stealing his paycheck, and that he owed it to the knicks to walk away from the deal.

He was payed for playing basketball, and he was injured playing for the team.

he *may* have owed it to the team to accept a mutually beneficial buyout (ie, the allan houston clause) to free up cap room for the team, but the team "locked him in" to a long term contract to alleviate the risk of player movement, and in doing so exchanged that risk for the possiblity of decreasing productivity (such as through injury).

Why, when he was under contract, should the player be the only one to suffer a fnancial loss due to an injury suffered while performing his contractual duties? I'm sorry, that is why you have contracts.

I noticed there's been no mention of the salary savings which would be a rather important angle to the story. Is it possible he's getting this year's salary or there was a negotiated settlement. Is that even allowed under the CBA?

I gald he finally let the knicks free and maybe in year or two they can be able to have a resonable tax luxury.

It is very sad to see how Allan Houston's career ended. He was an excellent player until he injured his knee. He was an amazing shooter and a good person for the community. You hate to see a good person go down like that.

Good point.

Whn players have to retire due to injury, doesn't the insurance the team takes out on the players pay their salaries?
