Hornets Discussion

Hall of Famer
They are pretty good team with no bench. 22-11 for the season 13-5 on the road. Playing great BB. Tonight they disposed Warriors.
Chandler with 22/22, Paul had 24/13/5, Pedja 24/7 and West had 20 pts. If they had any bench whatsoever - they would be contenders. Tonight only 11 pts off the bench. I lobe Bobby but he has benn horrible as of late - he might be getting too old.
I figured that they might be in a PO hunt but if they stay healthy and that is a big IF - the will be a tough out for any PO team especially snce they play well on the road.

Chandler is a monster and Paul is one of the best young PGs in the league. I like them a lot. All they really need is a good SG IMO that can D up, handle the ball a bit, and hit 3s. Peja is playing like they thought he would when they signed him also. West is having a good season too. I like the Hornets a lot.

And what amuses me is that New Orleans is precisely the sort of team that should have made an offer to Salmons, instead of us. But, then again, maybe they didn't anticipate being this good this quickly...

I'm still astonished that he didn't want to play for Phoenix; I don't know what the hell he was thinking...

I'm not too sure that John Salmons is the kind of player that the Suns need. He's not too terribly good and efficient off the bench like Barbosa and Diaw are, and he's not a gritty, "lock down the other team's best swingman" defender like Raja Bell has the reputation of being. He's certainly not a great long distance threat. I get the feeling that he'd be sitting on the bench behind Grant Hill.

Speaking of the Hornets, Chris Paul is, in my opinion, the best point guard in the League right now. I know Steve Nash and Jason Kidd are still there at the top in most people's minds, but they both have weaknesses (Jason Kidd is slowing down and has never been a very good shooter, and Steve Nash is poor defensively, while his offensive game is virtually flawless for a point guard). I don't see any weaknesses in Paul's game at this point. He's only a third year player, but improves some critical aspect of his game each season. The dude's serious about his, man.

And with Peja showing that he can still contribute, and Tyson Chandler quickly making a fan out of anybody who ever said they didn't like him (count me in that group), the Hornets are just a couple of pieces away from making a good playoff run in the West.

I'm guessing you would have turned down my offer of Derron Williams and Ben Gordon in the Kingfans O-league..

Don't forget about David West.

what a win by Hornets in Phoenix without West and with no bench since 111 of 118 pts was scored by starters who were all great.

I don't really understand the preconception that the Hornets have no bench; to put it in a nicer way, the Hornets are more heavily reliant on their starters as opposed to having no bench. Looking at their bench, you can definitely see that they each have individual talent and/or accolades - for his career, Bobby Jackson puts up career sixth man type numbers (10 points in 23 mpg, on average) and he was sixth man of the year for us during the '02-'03 season; Jannero Pargo has made his name in the league through scoring, shooting, and gunning, and even had the audacity to average 9.2 ppg off the Hornets bench last year; his name, and his game, is completely contradictory to lack of bench scoring. That's already two gunner type guards off the bench. Rasual Butler's claim to fame was his part-time starting gig last year with the Hornets in which he averaged 10 ppg; he's also supposedly a good three point shooter, so his scoring punch should always be there. Melvin Ely's more a scorer than defender, and three young prospects (Wright, Vinicius, and Armstrong) round out the roster. The bulk of their roster's bench is self-made for scoring, it's just that they are not getting the minutes (none of them get more than 20 mpg) to produce, and that's why their (lack) of production is magnified.

Their bench is a bunch of mismatched pieces. I love Bobby Jackson but he is not what he used to be. He is no longer a spark plug he was for us. Pargo is just a gunner and nothing else. He scores his but at the expense of the team game rather than being a sparks that gets the team going with his scoring.

Their starters are great though. Paul is the best young PG in the league and he makes everyone at least a notch better. Peja is their long range threat, West does his best work from mid range and Chandler is a beast defensively. Their starters mesh pretty well. They are matched to complement each other's strengths and weaknesses. Their bench on the other hand is just too one dimensional. They are not getting minutes because they are not producing. Simple as that really.

Tonight - they have disappointed me bitterly. Tonight's loss in my eyes is worse than a 20 game losing streak. They were pathetic. Luckly, they will play Heat next

Awsome game by Bobby tonight. Finally ! Heat sux and so this win means nothing but if their bench can keep playing like this - they will be okay

What a fun game to watch if you like Hornets :)

they are playing a Adriatic League level team.

Bobby Jackson makes me very nostalgic. Tonight, he ignited the crowd almost as much as he used to do at ARCO. Has had bad season so far but he could play on my team any time

You'd get more cheer in a graveyard as Gimli would say. Perhaps he feels more nostalgic than you nights like that.

Easy win tonight against the Sonics. Horents are 26-12 and in the crazy Western Conference where 5 teams are all on a half a game distancem they are right there. Bobby has played really well over the last couple of games or so. Only pathetic thing is that there weren't even 10000 people watching them which is pathetic. If we had a team like this ARCO would be rocking

WOW - what a demolition of Spurs in San Antonio. Hornets are the best team in the West right now and it is not a fluke or schedule. It seems to be for real.

Not sold on them. Which teams do you think they could beat in a playoff series?

Jazz and Warriors not so much, but I dont think Lakers and Nuggets would fare well.

I doubt LA would have much of a problem w/ NO as long as they have a healthy Bynum. They have nothing to stop him or Kobe, which = an inside out attack. I think the major chink in their playoff armor is Peja unless they have their screening down to a tee (strategy in a 7-gmr for any team will be to hone in on him specifically; Chris Paul or not, draw and kicks become harder w/ a shotblocker in the middle).

Nuggets have more trouble winning on the road against comparable teams than any other team in the WC playoff hunt, imo. I don't know if they'd beat anyone right about now.

I'd give Utah the upper hand too. They can buckle down defensively in a team sense when need be (and slow pace). Utah's always tough to beat in the playoffs. Toughness is institutional there, hate them or not.

Bynum wouldn't be a factor against the Hornets. He'd be in foul trouble practically every game. I think that's the strategy to handicapping the Lakers, until Bynum gets more disciplined defensively.

Pedja hasn't practiced whole year and takes loads of pills just so he can play. He's been hit and miss the whole year, even shooting better 3pt percentage then 2 pts. If your strategy against NO is to stop him, just wait until West drops 30 on you, and CP3 is still running the show whether Peja is 1/9 or 10/15 (as has been the case this whole year).

I was very surprised when I saw Serbian National basketball coach saying this today. What the heck?!How come that he can't even practise because of pain,I thought that operation would give him that chance.Congratulations to the guy if he can score 20 points 3 games in a row with no training and with pills. That sucks

Kings and Hornets are my favorite teams, as I have to support sac automatically since they are my 'home' team, and I've supported the hornets since their days in Charlotte. I went to a kings v hornets game last season, and was one of only 3 or 4 people in ARCO wearing hornets stuff. I will be going to the game this friday, and look for the yellow Paul jersey. I also might bring a sign, as I have very close seats.

I don't think it's that unusual for a player coming back from major surgery to play games without practice. He probably could practice but he would have missed even more games then he did so far this year. But it's obvious that he is not 100% - some games he looked like a shadow of his former self, although lately he's played much better.

I thought he sat out all of last year so he wouldn't have to be super-careful about his back. As much as I loved to watch him shoot, I'm certainly glad we didn't give him the $63 million contract. It runs through 2112, right?
