Hockey sucks ... or does it? (split)

Kings moved to my home town. Instant fan.

Before, I was a semi-Warriors fan but hadn't been to a Warriors game in years.

I'm 100% a fan from geography. I root for all NorCal teams, some more than others. Kings over Warriors. Niners over Raiders. Giants over A's. Monarch's a little. No hockey. Hockey sucks.

So not TRUE !!!!

Awww, cut him some slack. He probably doesn't even know what timbits are, let alone a hat trick.

For those who aren't interested in hockey, know that it's a chance to see a Northern California team (San Jose) beat the living daylights out of the LA team, consistently.

There. Bet you like it better already, eh? :p

Unfortunately, that means we can add hockey to the list of sports "the Kings" get beat up in. ;)

Its funny, I was a lot bigger hockey fan til the middle 90s when Bettman started mucking up the game, in part because I can hit the hockey nets much better than I can shoot a basketball. The Kings down turn has given me a little chance to get back into hockey the last few years. Hockey most definitely does not suck, but its not for everybody. If only Bettman had gotten that.

Hopefully the Sharks can pull off the comeback!

You lost my respect when you said that you watch the Monarchs over any Hockey (let alone championship quality hockey from the only hockey team in NorCal). :p

Most people I know that don't like Hockey either don't understand it or never gave it a legitimate chance (usually both).

[minor anal retentive nitpick]

This expression is written backwards. I know what a hat trick is, but I've never heard of timbits. Since "hat trick" and "blue line" are probably the two expressions that the average non-hockey fan has heard of, this statement should be written the other way around, i.e., "He probably doesn't even know what a hat trick is, let alone what timbits are."

[/end minor anal retentive nitpick]

And, as for this:

You lost my respect when you said that you watch the Monarchs over any Hockey (let alone championship quality hockey from the only hockey team in NorCal).
I like the Monarchs over hockey, too. In fact, since the NBA and NHL seasons overlap, I won't even consider getting into hockey; I damned sure don't drop $300 a year on League Pass to spend the winter watching any sport other than basketball. I have always said, as a general rule, that I like basketball at any level way more than I like any sport that ain't basketball, and that includes "championship quality hockey." If that is going to be a problem, just let me know, and I'll be happy to let you know what you can do with your respect.

I don't think hockey "sucks," even though I haven't followed it since before many of you were even born. It is, however, my least favorite team sport (of those readily available in the U.S.).

I am a basketball fan, first and foremost. I follow the NBA, WNBA, men's and women's NCAA and even local high school ball. If respect means watching hockey over WNBA then "phooey" on respect.

Women's basketball does less than nothing for me. And that is not being sexist. I can watch womens tennis, soccer, golf, volleyball, and even figure skating (don't tell anyone), but watching women's basketball is just pure torture to me.

We obviously don't see eye to eye on this topic. That is fine. But I found your last comment to be disrespectful and snide. There is no need for any of that.

Anyway, have fun with your Monarchs/High School/CYO basketball and I will enjoy my playoff hockey.

I usually, if not always, will watch a game in which the cup could be or will be skated...to me, there are very few better traditions in sports. I also will pick up the Sharks during the playoffs because playoff ANYTHING is worth watching.

You know what, if all you had said was "Women's basketball does less than nothing for me," then I would have stayed out of it. But this is a women's basketball-friendly board, and you've been here long enough to know that. So, when you imply that someone who likes women's basketball better than hockey (and on a basketball message board, imagine that!) is not worthy of respect, well... you reap what you sow.

In other words, from my point of view, you were the one who started it with the disrespectful and snide comments and, AFAIC, you got what you had coming. Now, if you want to consider the matter dropped, then I will do the same. If not, well... I'm sure you know by now that I ain't exactly known for turning the other cheek around here...

I noticed you did not mention women's hockey in your list.

I personally tend to agree - though not to the extent of it being torture. But I really enjoy watching a number of women's sports a number of which I find more compelling than the men's versions, basketball happens to not be one of them. But I'd watch a full season of the WNBA over anything other than a USA-Canada women's hockey gold medal match.

Hockey is a great game to play and watch ... of course, in my opinion. There are so much passion and energy in hockey.

I think this season in NHL was great; we have many young exciting players like Crosby, Malkin, Phaneuf, Kane and The Great Ovechkin. It is almost like Gretzky and Mario time.

I usually watch 1) NBA, 2) NHL, 3) MLB, 4) NCAA Basketball, 5) NFL. But this year I think hockey is #1. It was that exciting for me.

I truly respect people's opinions but I truly can not understand HOW people like WNBA more than hockey !!

P.S. Please, do not say that hockey sucks if you are in Canada, Russia or Sweden. It might be dangerous (Just kidding :)).

Hockey has won me over tonight.

I have always respected the sport and thought the guys were probably about or even more skilled as any other brand of athlete out there.

But tonights San Jose/Dallas matchup (Which is now heading into triple overtime) has had me on the edge of me seat for the past two hours. Every shot, every check, everything has had me talking/yelling at my TV.

This, my friends, is a game tonight!

Amazing game. Marty Turco was standing on his head. I knew the Sharks were done about 3 minutes into the final OT, it looked like the Stars came out re-energized after being flat for 40 minutes.

3 of my least favorite teams in the NHL remain... soooo, go Pens!

What a heartbreaker.

...Turco was unbelievable. He was a fricken brick wall...What a game though.

And Im actually going to be watching some Sharks hockey next year. And all playoff hockey! That was probably the most adrenaline pumping sports moment for me since the Kings days of old, or the Giants World Series appearance years ago!

O_O

The game was great ... actually, the playoffs has been great so far!!

And how about a Pitt-Philly war in the next round ?? it is gonna be nasty :)!!

P.S. Nabokov was VERY GOOD!!! I hope he will get his Vezina in June.

Had the Sharks won we'd all be talking about that first OT save. That was save of the year material. He scared the crap out of me every time he left the crease to handle the puck though. There's one guy who's benefited from the restricted area behind the net :)
