Help Choosing the right car...

The choices have been narrowed down to the 2006 Honda Civic Coupe EX and the 2006 VW Jetta 2.5 Value Edition.

My family has never owned VW or Honda. If anyone drives one of these cars (any year) or knows a lot about one of the other then please share. It appears the Jetta is very safe with all the air bags and side impact rating but the civic gets 10 more mpg than the Jetta.

Thank you for any help. BIC

I drove both cars, and I have to admit (I really don't like Civics) that I had more fun driving the Civic. It's got stylish interior, and it looks better than its predecessors. At that price, you won't get a better car.

I will always choose a Honda over VW. Better car all around, and, generally, spends more time on the road (not in the shop) than the Jetta.

My 1st car was a honda crx and I loved it. Excellent gas mileage and no mechanical problems. My hubbie had a honda accord when I met him and we've always had a honda with no problems!! There were only a couple of recall notices through the years with our various hondas. I got a recall notice on the windshield wiper motor and ignored it. I think it bit the dust a year after the notice & took it in expecting to pay. They fixed the recall item no charge.

We bought a Dodge Caravan 9 years ago, because at that time Honda didn't have one. We'll never make that mistake again. We've had sooo many problems with our minivan and it's on it's last leg. We will be switching back to Honda with our next purchase.

Just tossing my few crumbs out there. Hope it helps.:)

From a law enforcement standpoint the Honda, especially the Accord, is one of the most popular vehicles for car theft in the Sacramento area. They seem to be targeted a lot.

Buy a Ford Focus no one wants to steal one. Heck I even left the keys in my mother's Focus hoping someone would take it. What a piece of junk.

I currently drive a 2000 VW Beetle, and previously had a 1985 Honda Civic Sedan, and I've been happy with both.

The Honda had tons of miles (and a new engine and clutch) but ran like a tank. During the time I owned it, all it ever needed was regular maintenance. I am very impressed with Honda's durability.

The Beetle has spent more time in the shop, but that's mostly because its newer -- newer cars = computer chips/power everything = someone has to be paid to fix little stupid things. The amount of work needed on the VW has certainly not been excessive. And, I'll say one thing about the new VWs, they're sturdy as hell. For as silly looking as the Beetle is, it does not feel like its on the verge of falling apart (many of the new cars have so many plastic parts that it feels like driving a Barbie car). They hold up well in an accident as well. My aunt had a Jetta wagon and got in a pretty bad accident -- the other car looked like a crushed soda can -- but my aunt's Jetta didn't even have a scratch, and she walked away without even the slightest bit of pain. If the body shop hadn't pointed out the broken axle, you'd never guess it was totaled.

My dad, for some unknown reason, has three Fords.

At least there's usually one to drive while the other two are in the shop for some sort of recall.

Please don't get a jetta..... unless you're a girl that is. It just looks like a nicer corolla haha. I'm most likely gonna get the civic SI that's coming out(ya'll mightve seen the thread). I've seen the regular civic and for its price I'd rather get the civic. Hondas reliabilty is way better than VW. VW's are always in the shops, while hondas drive forever.

Eh, you would choose the Accord over the Passat ? Come on now, the Passat is a better car hands down. I see how some people can prefer a Civic to a Jetta, but VW, AUDI is greater than Honda, Acura...and I own an Acura myself.

Funny you should say that. I bought my first car about 8 months ago and it is a focus. I never lock my doors and I don't live in the best neighborhood but no one seems to try to steal it even though many other cars in my complex get thier windows bashed in. I am contemplating trading my focus in for another car (not a ford) but I am also considering keeping the focus until I move out of my complex since it's of no value to anyone but me.

Here's what ya get with a Jetta: you hit the accelerator and wait till it decides to go. Hondas are WAY better.

Thanks everyone for your help. Ive had some trouble switching email address' here and then the site was down. I'm leaning towards the Civic now. The most important thing for me and making this decision is the durability and if its in the shop every month. Thanks again everyone!

I had an 89 honda. You talk about great gas mileage, I went two weeks or more w/o having to fill up. To put it in perspective, I went from reno to san fran, went all around the city, drove all the way back to reno and filled up when i got back to town.

I love the Triumph Spitfire! But, if their cars break down as often as their bikes, I'll pass.

My dad used to have a dark green Spitfire that he spun out on the Bay Bridge. I think of that every time I see that car.

Well fortuantly The Triumph car company was a compleetly different intity from the bike manufactuer... My Spit has actually been prety reliable but then again I tinker with her a couple times a week. Love her but it's more like a street legal go cart than a car. At 90 mph you feel like you are flying over 100 and it's just palin scary.

absolutly go with the honda.

honda's have some of the best repuations in cars, those japanses carmakers really know what they are doing.

smaller, better gas milage, and you will get much longer life out of them. also, they are much easier to work on, on the VERY rare occasion works needs to be done.

my dad is an autobody man and says the jettas are really hard to work on, especially mechanically.
