Grease! You're the one that we want!

Okay, I have to revise my previous comments a bit. I watched tonight, partially because there was nothing else on...

I was wrong. There are some talented people on there. I guess, as someone said, the week I watched must just have been an off-week or something.

I've voted for Derek. I like him. And I hope Allie gets the Sandy role.

:)

I still think its a trainwreck, but I still watch. I like the brunette Sandy. She's the only one on the show I like in a good way even though I think Sandy has to be blonde. I think Derek is probably the best Danny when you consider looks and talent although Austin is far more talented. Just soooo wrong for the part. I don't buy Max and the way he oversang Suspicious Minds bugged me but even though I think he's made to play a geekier role I still buy him as a greaser over Austin.

One thing that really bugs me about this whole show is that they made a comment to one of the performers tonight that they should be singing their songs "in character". I'd like to see that but they always seem to go out of their way to take them out of character with their wardrobe changes between the group sings and their solo performances.

This is an audition for the show Grease. You must make it your own yes, but within the character you are auditioning for. We must be able to see Sandy and Danny up there. Wardrobe, song choice etc....should have absolutely nothing to do with that. I have been to over 100 auditions in my life and yes, you try to dress for the part you are auditioning for, but the most important thing is that the director and producer see the role in your performance not in your clothes. That being said.....

Austin should've gone home last night. Autins comes across as someone who be more interested in Kinikie or Doody than Sandy. For me his performances are forced and completely unbelievable. They are almost creepy.

Max is by far the best on that stage. He is genuine and believable. He looks like a Greaser. He is the most consistent performer up there. He is extremely likable and yet can turn on the arrogance needed for Danny Zuko. His voice is perfect for the role. He has great acting chops and is extremely appealing in that unassuming way.

Derek is gorgeous but not consistent. He has the weakest voice left out of the 3. He has cracked 3 times and his voice is pure nasal. He will not be able to sustain 8 shows a week.

Laura-Oh my goodness. This girl is fabulous. Absolutely fabulous. What a voice and she is the best actress up there. And hello people they are called WIGS. I do believe Sandy should be blonde. But, you don't cast a role based on hair color. You dye it or put a wig on.

Ashley-Not believable in the tiniest way for me. She is "acting" the whole time. Best dancer, but who cares. She is a good little performer, but not starring role material yet.

Allie-Way tooooo young at this point and she is a terrible actress. She looks lost on that stage a lot. Watch the group numbers again and you will know what I am talking about. She just isn't strong. Her voice doesn't have the range and like Derek, she could not handle 8 shows a week.

IMHO-The only 2 people up there that will be believable AND capable of a Broadway run are Max and Laura. And if they do win, I will make my way out to Broadway to see them.

I didn't care for the way they handled the show, especially considering how much is at stake now for the remaining Danny and Sandy hopefuls. "I've Had the Time of My LIfe" was a horrible song selection, IMHO, as neither of the males could possibly sound like Bill Medley and the song just doesn't sound right without his type of voice...

Having said that, I think the right four are left. I would like to see Max win, because he is - as I think you pointed out - is the perfect "greaser." I think either Laura or Ashley could do the role.

I finally realized what I don't like about Austin. I didn't like him during his time on Days of Our Lives but didn't recognize him until they mentioned it tonight...

I was underwhelmed. I agree that the Dirty Dancing song was an awful choice, I also didn't like the way they arranged some of the performances as it seemed that Ashley got all the glory notes (or maybe she just reached harder for them because both my fiancee and I thought they didn't help her cause).

I thought the Max Belles Palsey sympathy bit was annoying but so was Austin's fat kid photo. I don't like either of them, not a news flash. I disagree that either are convincing greasers but that's probably my own issue with separating real-life greasers with make believe. I still prefered Derek as my make believe greaser, sadly the boy can't hold all his notes together and lip-synching on Broadway is frowned upon. Incidentally I do believe that I have seen Austin in Hairspray although I'd have to check the playbill and he was convincing as some kind of 50's rock and roll type, but more of a Buddy Holly.

I'm left still only truly liking Laura, so I hope she wins for Sandy.

It was a let down as far as final performances go. Nothing popped. The videos were corny on all counts. Fiance, repentful yet still bitter sister, fat kid, bels palsy......please.

I've Had The Time Of My Life and Endless Love?? BORING!!!

It's funny that you think Ashley got the glory notes PDX because I thought Austin did as well. I still don't see him as Danny Zuko in any way shape or form. He is way too pretty and I refer back to my post above as far as love interest goes. I can't believe there was only a 1% difference in the votes. Austin is just too La Cage Aux Folles for me.

Max for me is the greaser. Especially in the Grease setting. They are goofy, sweet, wannabe tough guys. They are not tough at all. Leo Balmudo and The Scorpians scared the heck out of them. Plus he is likeable, with a great voice and even better acting chops.

For me it has always been Laura. She is more believable. Ashley is "acting" all the time. Laura has a beautiful voice, and she can sweet one second and sexy the next. I like her.

So, Max and Laura, break a leg.

I guess that is my objection to calling him a "greaser". A T-bird, sure (although I still don't buy him as the leader of the T-birds). But aside from reality just about every other fictional portrayal of greasers has been juvenile delinquents from the wrong side of the tracks who may not be "tough guys" by nature but certainly become them by necessity. Even though Grease waters it down I've still always felt there was that element and I think I might even prefer a grittier modern interpretation. But that's just me and I'm sure instead we'll get some hideous new original song so it can contend for a Tony somehow (I'm a cynic, so sue me :)).

I agree that Austin did get the glory notes in his arrangement too although I find that both Austin and Max tend to oversing which is why it was less bothersome. Laura is so subtle compared to the others although she certainly has an annoying quirk or two. Sadly I didn't buy any chemistry between her and either of the Danny's nor did I see much with Ashley.

I totally forgot about Ashley's sister. When we were watching I made a mock comment about her being jealous because acting was her gig only to find out that's exactly where they were going with it. Ridiculous although at the time we had no idea how over the top they'd go with Austin and Max's videos. Also with my own wedding less than 3 weeks away I found the postponing the wedding angle to be rather ridiculous although I'm sure they exaggerated it by the way the groom was handling things. They both strike me as a bit young to be getting married but that's not my call. The groom seemed to be an actor too and hopefully Laura's potential move to Broadway won't create any fractures. Good luck to them as they seem to be a cute couple .

I get you, really I do. And that fits with the Outsiders and The WArriors (cool movie-Loved the Basball Gang), but like you said, Grease is the watered down version and they never try to hide the fact that the Scorpions are the real Greasers and the T-Birds are just posers.

I really don't think they will add a song to the show. Typically they do that for the movie versions of Broadway shows. Evita, Dreamgirls. Did Chicago have one????

The WArriors (cool movie-Loved the Basball Gang)
As did I... so much so that I named my dodgeball team in their honor. I strongly prefer The Wanderers as my greaser/JD flick of choice. And maybe Cry Baby to a lesser extent.

It seemed to be a trend in the late 90s that they would add songs for revivals. I can't remember which shows. But Grease has been bastardized so much from its original form I have no clue what's what anymore... Every time I see it its different. If the name of the show is any indication it appears that this revival will be based around the movie rather than the original as it is and a quick check of the website www.greaseonbroadway.com confirms that they even plan on using the horrid disco theme song in this revival.

Chicago the movie was nominated for "I Move On" at the Oscars and that is not in the original stage version. Not sure if they added any other songs.

I kinda got the feeling they were going to go more the movie route when Hopelessly Devoted was sung over and over and over again. That song is not in the Broadway Show. Also, You're The One That I Want, and Sandy are not in the stage show. It's Stranded At The Drive In and All Choked Up.

Adding songs from the movie doesn't bother me, but writing new ones does.

I hated the songs they added to Evita. I love that show. It is my dream role and they ruined it for me. They even had Madonna sing the lovers song. It drove me crazy.

The Wanderers??? Which one is that? Cry Baby-Loved it. What a brilliant, dark, crazy weird movie. Johnny Depp was great.

The Wanderers came out in 1979 and stars Ken Wahl of Wise Guy fame and Karen Allen in her first featured role. It also features the late Erland Van Lidth (the heavy set opera singer from The Running Man and Stir Crazy) as the menacing Terror of the rival Baldies gang and a few other minor character actors such as Meat from Porky's.

It takes place in 1963 smack in the middle of the transformation from the carefree 50's golden era to the socially aware climate of the mid 60's. Its got your typical ethnic and neighborhood centric gangs and the fights that ensue but it also contains an intelligent portrayal of a rapidly changing world and the youth caught up in it. The realistic portrayal serves as a good compliment to the over the top world in The Warriors making them an ideal double feature in my book.

Yes! I vaguely remember seeing it as a kid. Ken Wahl rings a bell. I will have to check it out again. Thank you.

Pretty much spot on with how I feel. I'm glad someone else said Austin is creepy. He's too slick and he looks like he's performing, not acting. Not only that, but he's too old to play a high schooler. Totally not believable to me. Danny is not only a wannabe tough guy, remember he, too, has a very vulnerable and not so confident side. I just don't see that in Austin.

Derek is handsome and likable, but I agree on the weak voice.

Ashley is like Austin to me. She looks like she's performing, not acting. While I think she's got a good and strong voice, for some reaon her high voice starts to sound like chalk on a blackboard to me, like screaming.

Laura is strong, attractive and seems to me to have a good ability to come across as both the sweet Sandy and the sexy Sandy. As to hair. Maybe most people see Sandy as blonde, but I'm not really hung-up on that. The character is more important.

Max.....I love Max. Of all the guys up there, I most bought him as a high schooler in love and also as a wannabe greaser. And while the videos were hokey, it did give me insight into why Max brings the "realness" to the role. The cockiness/bravado and the sensitive side. He never seems like he is just performing. He is the character.

Is he conventionally handsome? Of course not, although I think he's very cute. But that isn't really what attracts young girls like Sandy. Its that "bad boy" image. However, she eventually goes beyond that intial attraction, because she finds the person inside of the image. And Danny finds the same in her. He finds that there is more to Sandy than her "Sandra Dee" image.

Yep, Max and Laura are the far more believable as the characters to me, than Austin and Ashley. And to me they seemed to have the most chemistry. They seemed to have developed a connection a couple of weeks before the duet, too.

I have a hard time seeing Austin or Ashley in love with anyone besides themselves.

Wow. Great points. Having read that, I find myself totally agreeing.

:)

Kennedog-Remember when Sandy first meets Danny she has no idea he is a greaser. They are on vacation. She doesnt' find out he is a greaser until Rizzo sets up their first meeting and Sandy is shocked.

Ah, yes, I had forgotten that. :D

I know my Grease baby. I have played Rizzo twice. Love the show.

Would love them to write a Grease 50 years later and see John T. all bloaty and Jeff Conway all strung out. The girls would look so much better.

I love the show, too. Even, tho, the 60's is my teen era (and I love that time period) the 50's was fun and I like the music. Grease is just a fun, feel-good show to me. :D

Nice show tonight so far. Congratulations to Laura!! They just announced her as the winning Sandy. Now I can only hope that Max gets the Danny role. There is just NO chemistry between Laura and Austin.

I totally forgot to watch til now. I didn't find Max to have much chemistry with Laura either - she seemed to match up with Derek. That is something of a problem when you vote on individuals. Still Austin is so wrong for this part it doesn't matter. Max will win.

I set the DVR to pick up the whole thing on Bravo later in this week.

You're not missing much. If you turn over now, you'll see the Danny selection right after the commercial. The rest of the show has just been retro stuff to fill the hour.

Yeah I caught it as soon as I saw the thread. I'll still tivo the replay on Bravo but it will probably be backlogged since I head to Vegas in a week.

I don't know why but I still really hate the way they do Grease Lightnin.

The Rizzo they have reminds me of ChaCha from the movie for some reason.

Yey!!!!!!!!! I am so happy Max and Laura won. Max looked truly shocked. Humble till the end. I have to tell you he looked pretty good leading that pack at the end.

The Broadway cast was interesting. Where was Doody? Could perhaps, Austin play Doody???

Rizzo did look like Cha Cha. To harsh for me, but oh well. They all looked rather old, but they sound great and maybe from the stage it won't look to obvious. I sure liked Max out front. He does it for me big time.

Congratulations to them both.
