Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Believe it or not, a better team game was played tonight, at least for a half. However the lesson to be taken away is that we simply aren't going to score and aren't going to win if our starting backourt isn't filling it up. You could throw Cousins in as well, but his thing was a little different, as he has a history of problems against long shotblockers, and did again tonight.

BTW, Thornton got absolutely SMOKED by Ridnour, on both sides of the ball believe it or not. Should seriously be embarrassed about it. Also raises a question I haven't really paid attention to before: could his prolific scoring be due to his quickness advantage over bigger 2s? And if so can a quick PG cause him problems?

Alright, stretching here, but since this was kind of a bad sequel, Theme = Bad Movie Sequels.

Boxscore

Salmons ( C ) -- ok, well, truth was that Salmons played better in some ways, and problematically in others. Chicken and egg thign here, but for whatever reason he was a bigger part of the offense for whatever reasno. So big in fact that a healthy percentage of our called plays out of timeouts were run for Salmons, and we appeared to have a specific iso set just for John. No, really, I do not kid. And thing is, finally elevated to the primary option role which he knows he has always deserved, John had some moments taking advantage of Wes Johnson, who has been almost as bad as John (apparently has hit 2 of his lat 25 threes). Of course the problem is that if you call John's number, it never really occurs to him that maybe he could draw some attention and pass the ball. So he had hits. And then he had 1 on team forces into the teeth of the defense, and either way the ball is completely stopped. And while Johnson is 2 of his last 25 from 3, i think John is now 0 for his last 27, as he once again bricked them all and apparently has issued a public statement flatly refusing to hit an open corner three, no matter how nicely set up, until he is guaranteed at least 15 shots a game. Bricked one of those at the end of the first quarter that should have made the lead 1, but instead led to a Wolves breakout to push it out to 6. Had another with nobody within 10 feet in crunchtime. Nothing. With all our main gusy struggling, was reinserted in the early 4th to try to tide us over until Reke and Thornton got back, but was out of synch with a bench crew experimenting with that newfangled passing stuff. Did find Cisco in the corner for a late thre, and here's where we're at with John that an 11pt 3reb 3ast game on sub 40% shooting is one of his better ones in recent memory.

The Legend of Zorro (2005) -- 1998's The Mask of Zorro was actually a decent light action flick. Fell apart a bit late, but Catherine Zeta Jones was at her hotness peak, so it all balanced out. 7 years later (never a good sign when it takes so long) along came a sequel nobody particularly was calling for, except now the principle characters are squabbling, whatever charm there is is gone, the cheese is high, and added on top is one of those Hollywood-only kids who simply must die. Not a scene goes by that he does not completely ruin, and they weren't great scenes to start with.

Hickson ( C- ) -- started off the game pretty well, scoring most of his points in his early stint, and helping Love to have an ugly first half. But got weaker the loinger this one went. Got undisciplined on is Love defense in the third, and unlike similar mistakes in the first half, after hafl Love took advantage and began to rather unimpressively rack up his typical big numbers. Not being a good reciever for Tyreke, missing shots that were sent up and fumbling balls down the stretch of the 4th. While the obvious guy to replace in a lineup shakeup is Salmons, there is a second move that could be made, and that is moving Jt into the starting lineup in place of Hickson. JT who both Cousins and Reke are familiar with and work well with as a roleplayer, while JJ is on and off and seemingly constantly searching for the right tone to his game.

Ocean's 12 (2004) -- the Clooney/Pitt remake of the original Brat Pack's Ocean's 11 was of course a blockbuster. A fun, swaggering caper flick with more style and more star power than you could shake a stick at. A sequel seemed natural, although from the beginning the plot was going to be artifical given the first one's premise. that the sequel could go so far sideways though was a major disapointment. The plot was a mess, but the issues went beyond that. Stuck with a huge array of characters from the first movie, and now trying to add in even more to keep things fresh, many of them were given inconsequential makework roles by the plot just so that they could have somethign to do. Meanwhile the main characters/actors got kind of lazy and smug. Rather than swagger you got self-satisfied smirks as the whole thing seemed more party for the cast than movie involving the characters. In the end it ended up all attitude and no substance as eveybody forgot just how mcuh of the enjoyment of a caper flick is tight clever plotting.

Cousins ( C ) -- if you didn't see the game this one would be hard to tell from the numbers, but basically what happened here is for the 3rd straight games since DeMarcus went post beast in Toronto he has gotten his butt kicked inside, and this time he it was Darko freakin' Milicic who modest numbers aside, smothered, blocked, or stripped DeMarcus on everything he tried to do inside and so tramuatized him that for the rest of the game he went into full Hawesesque retreat mode with his skirts raised up off his ankles. Knocked down several long jumpers from out there and thus gave the moderately "efficicent" statline. But being an efficient jumpshooting center is not the way to make any sort of impact. Was notably more active as a passer in this one, early on trying several impossible passes for turnovers, and later notching several good assists. That's a good signmostly, unless its going to be accompanies by the Haweslite race out to the perimete. Almost makes you wonder if we once again gave him new directions on how to play in our ever changing system. If so, give him back the old ones, just with passing. On the other end got 2 early blocks on Rubio, but for some reason there seemed to be somethgin off with his hands tonight. Normally the great mitts are a big part of his game, but he was fumbling every rebound out there tonightto complete the Hawes impression, and only finished with 3. Had one moment of glory, going to the ground tied up with Love as 2 of the former top per minute rebounders in the league wrestled for one. But that was it for Cousins as he started to resemble another old Kings fave, Mikki Moore, on the glass, and was even dropping things that hit his hands directly. As I said in Houston, whatever sickness he was supposed to have, I hope it was serious, like flesh eating bacteria serious, because it seems to have stopped his momentum just dead in his tracks. Just having a sniffle wiffles isn't going to cut it for explanation 3 games later.

The Whole Ten Yards (2004) --back in 2000 the Whole Nine Yards was kind of a surprise sleeper hit finding a quirky dark comedy balance with a story of a hitman who moves in next door to a loser of a dentist. Everyone seemed to be having fun, with Amanda Peet adding to the festivities getting starkers and making you think getting knocked off by her might almost be fun. Then this...thing came along as a sequel and just...it was hold your nose bad. Failed at just about everything. Same cast, but now made to look like a bunch of amateur actors by lousy direction and writing. Everything was over the top, the lines were flat and unfunny, even in situations that should have been. And I would go on except I could stomach no more after about the 30-40 minute mark, and a PG-13 rating meant that Amanda wasn't likely to be running around shooting anyone au natural this time.

Thornton ( D ) -- I am glad I took a little time before doing these, because I was hot about this one last night and might have jut dropped an F on Marcus for spite. His ofense consisted of a couple of strong finishes on the break early, and two spalshed in threes off nice Reke drive and kicks late, but the story of the game could be summed up thusly: Luke Ridnour kicked his ***. Completely, and in all ways. And made him like it. Might as well have gotten Marcsu some kinky bondage outfit because Luke Ridnour (Luke Ridnour!) made him his female dog for the night, and I hope that sticks in Marcus's craw. Completely unable to stay in front of Ridnour on dirves, effect his threes, or in anyway prevent him from having one of his biggest career games. And the flipside was perhaps even more distressing, as Ridnour's quickness caused Marcus obvious problems all night long. Could not get around him, or generate much space from him, and predictably resorted to low percentage drives after while over 2 or 3 defenders. And this is Luke Ridnour, noted softy you are supposed to be able to light up.

Batman and Robin (1997) -- the infamous Batman with nipples that George Clooney deperately wishes they would burn. Its a matter of debate when the 90's Batman franchise jumped the shark, but it was long gone with this one.

Evans ( C+ ) -- tough to grade. When a guy is your best rebounder, passer, and probably defender on a night you can only make the grade so low. On the other hand when that guy was your leading scorer up until 2 games ago and now has put up back to back single figure outings, you can only go so high. Fact is we need Reke to be a scorer, and a good one, on most nights if we are going to win games. Part of the problem I think is that word appears to have gotten out that we are the worst shooting team in the league, and abruptly the lane has been completely shut down for both Reke and Cousins. Difference in this one was that Reke responded to that just the way you should, and as the defense repeatedly collpased on him he kicked passes to open guys all over the perimeter for assist after assist, and added a few nice drive and dishes to inside guys as well. That's always been his unique way to be a major assist guy -- he draws so much attenton from defenses that someboyd just HAS to be open. Wether those somebodies on our team will consent to hit the open shots they get from that situation or not is another question. Reke was also on the glass from the beginning in this one, and got his hands on several Rubio passes and shots. He was doing a nice job at all the glue things. But offensively he was still flatlined, and we just can't afford that. There were few easy looks inside, and when he did get them he was so surprised he missed them. Was out of rhtyhm on the jumper. And begant o get frustrated and force things, including picking up two charges trying to juke Rubio. So props for doing all the other things, but it still wasn't what was neeeded here. He didn't have to have a huge night offensively, just maybe a 17ppg night or so in order for us to be close at the end and have a chance to steal it. He didn't. And so we didn't.

The Matrix Reloaded (2003) -- another infamous letdown without which the original movie would have a bigger legend. Even though I have been assured this is not true, this one always felt to me like The Matrix itself was meant to be a standalone and they had to scramble for far less compelling sequel plots (how exactly do you continue after your hero has ended the first movie as a superhero capable of manipulating the time and space of his environment?) Like most comic books which get out of control that way, the answer is you get stupid. I was one of those who liked the Architect's techobabble speech at the end though. Was the high point of this one for me other than Monica Bellucci's cleavage.

Bench

Thompson ( B+ ) -- a real bright point as for most of the night Jason came in and did what very few Kings have shown themselves able or willing to do, and put on a "how to be a roleplayer" clinic. Was moving without the ball, providing help defense, filling lanes, fighting for loose balls, just very solid. On the disappointing side for Jason he just does not appear to be a great rebounder anymore. As he's too young for it to be age related I don't know the reason, just know that his rebounding fell off the secodn half of last season, and its been mediocre throughout this one. Part of it may just be his relative lack of strength, as he was overpowered at times in there by the Wolves thick bodied Love and Pekovic combo. Nonetheless Smart has to be smart here -- Jason is playing exactly the way you want a roleplayer to play alongside ball and shot dominant stars. We need to start him and try to fix what's broken with our starting lineup.

Conan the Destroyer (1984) -- going in the wayback machine here, and ignoring the debacle that was the sci-fi channel quality attempted reboot this summer, we come to a movie not so affecionately known as "Conan the Decorator" to those that care. The first Arnold as Conan movie, Conan the Barbarian, found a happy balance between brutality and beauty, taking itself seriously and mastering its own cheese, along the way helping to launch the career of a certain Gubernator. The sequel was taken over by different people and lacked any of the self-confidence of the first opus, instead in an old story PG-ing the premise for the kiddies, and turning it into just another self mocking cheesefest that even some fun casting of people like Wilt Chamberlain, Grace Jones, and one of my childhood crushes Olviia D'Abo could not save (indeed D'Abo far from saving it was terrible. Just terrible in a very cute way)

Greene ( C+ ) -- brought in in the first quarter to guard... Kevin Love! I need not mention that I am starting to squirm at some of these smallball decisions by Smart too. Looked bad on defense in his early minutes getting beat inside and out by Love, then beat by Williams off the bench in the early 2nd. Stablized though, and as per usual of late became part of the reserve crew of roleplayers who played much more functionally than our overloaded everybody shoot all the time group of starters. Saved us with a flying full court defensive interception to save a basket just before the 3rd quarter buzzer, and played prety good lively defense as the game wore on, just outmatched by Love and should never have been playing him.
HaLLOWEEN%2B3.jpg

Halloween III (1982) -- a bit of a cheat here, as Halloween 3 "Season of the Witch" was in some ways not a sequel at all, but rather just a cheapie direct to video level release trading off of the original movie's good name. Nonetheless, it was quite terrible, having nothing at all to do with the orignal storyline or Michael Myers character, and instead replacing it with some inane plot by a Halloween mask company to kill America's children or some such. Good stuff. Really.

Fredette ( C ) --- thre were kind of two distinct eras in Jimmer's not many minutes tonight. During the first era, Jimmer came in as the PG next to Thronton, and he was just killing us out there. Could not get the offense set up in time real, got overpowered by Rubio, but finally scored ona play out of a timeout. During the second era though, after we quickly got Reke back in the game to run the offense and Jimmer moved off the ball, he settled down and was much more steady. Just keep things siple until he adjusts to te speed of the game. Began to use his head, and smartly began going under screens in his second stint on Rubio. Several good decisions on passes to JT were probably his highpoint, although after again missing the long bombs he's supposed to be able to make, I did like his response as the crowd began to taunt him to shoot the ball, as he pulled up and drained a tough 13ft fallaway.
Star-Wars--Episode-I--The-Phantom-Menace-Manga.jpg

Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace (1999) -- can a prequel be a sequel? I say yes. IN any case, putting a Star Wars flick on here may be heresy for members fo the Star Wars cult, but I say the heresy was committed by the series' own creater, not me. Perhaps the greatest indictment of him as a director is just how amaturish and lacking in emotion he made a great cst seem just by poor writing and badly timed cutaways.

Garcia ( B ) -- and again, one of our truest roleplayers getting one of our best grades. Great great defenisve play blocking Love on the break. Hit a few shots, moved the ball. Rebounds were of the unimpresive pick them up of the ground when everybody else runs up court variety, but he, Reke and Donte still grabbed more than any of our actual bigs. Hit several late threes as part of our final gasp. Have heard rumors that he was beaten up in the lockerroom after the game for breaking our "shooter's" sacred pact not to take part in any of that 3pt shooting nonsense.

I don't know if this counts as a blowout but, just in case, I'm going for the hat trick:

Christina Hendricks... Christina Hendricks... Christina Hendricks... Christina Hendricks... Christina Hendricks...

Hickson = Black Hole in Post (turnaround jumpshot)

Jimmer = very very poor defender and almost useless when shot isnt falling

Salmons = Makes team worse when steps foot on court

Cousins = Does not play under control

:/

Yeah. I thought the ball movement was alot better this game. At least for a while. C- to the team there.

3 point shot is still awful teamwide. 4-17. Bleh.

Salmons played fairly contained until he made 2 shots in a row (one good one off a pass, one hero shot.) I cringe every time he touches the ball.

Somewhere along the way, Evans picked up 10 assists. He missed a double double by one point.

Wow this team just can't shoot. And we have Jimmer! In comparison, Minnesota was shooting the lights out, esp Ridnour.

how do you stay innspired to make these grade threads?lol jesus christ i feel like drinking antifreeze just watching the kings play these days.

Salmons streak continues, he is 0-26 in the last 9 games from 3PT. The last game he made a 3 pointer was against New Orleans on January 1. At what point does Smart say enough and bench him or tell him to stop taking three's? It looks like his philosophy is to shoot through the slump but this is more like a drought than a dry spell.

Been through a lot of rough years around here, but I honestly can't remember a time when this team was just so unwatchable as an on court product. The entertainment value of this team is nill.

I'd say it's not quite as utterly hopeless as Kings team under "leadership" of Kenny Natt - but close to that unwatchable debacle.

i'm shocked that salmons is still starting. i'd give donte the nod over salmons. bigger defender and doesn't mind passing the rock.

If there is one team Adelman would never go to, it would be the Kings. Why would he come back after our owners screwed him over?

What if Gavin and Joe offered to mow his lawn? Because they don't have enough money to pay him big bucks as a coach.

the owners are morons and could have mended fences. petrie and adelman have history. who knows if petrie could have helped the cause.

Maybe if Burkle was the owner......one can always dream, right?

Where the EFF was Isaiah Thomas tonight?!? C'mon, he's the only true PG we have on our damn roster!

Edit: this really IS starting to look like the 'Major League' of NBA franchises...hope there's some sort of happy ending for us like the Indians had in the movie

Smart just said theres going to be line-up changes for the next game. Here's to hoping no more Salmons and more Donte/Cisco tandem...

It's just sad when we're getting excited about starting Donte Greene or Francisco Garcia
Well, I was sad anyway so, for me and I think the team, starting or playing Garcia more is very appealing to me. I think it will be an improvement. And I think it would be an improvement at either the 2 or 3 position.

I think our biggest problem is shooting which will cure itself. The biggest problem that won't cure itself is the inability of our frontcourt, particularly Evans and Thornton, to pass the ball well and in a timely manner. One could make the point that it is the system but I think it starts because they are not initially inclined to pass and they don't know how. You can point out that Evans had 10 assists tonight but I would point out that they all came only after he started a head long drive to the basket. He really needs to develop the passing or team him with somebody that can. This problem is there whether we win big or lose bad. Always. One answer is to try starting another pair at 1/2.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind starting IT next game just to see how it goes.

To the other poster, I'm more excited about getting Salmons out of the starting lineup.

Now that we've seen what this roster can do (or is it, can't do?) it's time to start thinking trades. In the meantime, Salmons has to sit and Thomas has to get some minutes. The team is in dire need of a real point guard. This team is an embarrassment waiting to happen and a major underachiever.
