Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Salmons ( C ) -- got the start in Muss's latest smallball experiment, and did little to begin as we were in trouble. So we went to the kids, and like a blind squirrel, we finally found a nut. Did little more after returning in the third, and this would again maybe be the Salmons unpredictability popping up I guess. Did not really hurt us, just did pretty much nothing.
Artest ( D ) -- came out and I was afraid he had just quit on us out there. Wouldn't shoot. Wouldn't run up and down the court. Was just standing there with his arms down at his sides while we played. And yet as the kids had the crazy 2nd quarter Ron's demeanor on the bench was positive and supportive. Nothing again after returning for the third quarter. Missed an open shot he should have taken, then missed a bad shot he clearly forced. Did not matter tonight. About all he did on the night was grab a few boards, and yet another totally ineffective night this time got swept under the rug by the general excitement over the kids.
Miller ( C+ ) -- slow start, but actually was one of the guys who first started to wake up as we made our huge run. But was pulled only a few minutes into it as we had just started to crawl back from a 22-16 deficit. In the second half had a few more moments working as a facilitator hitting the little guys on their cuts. But get this, 7'0" Brad Miller, in a game against the smallballing Golden State Warriors, managed to play 21 minutes and grab a grand total of zero rebounds. As in ZERO. Again...did not matter.
Martin ( A- ) -- back in the free wheeling run n gun, and scoring easily once again, albeit mostly from the line. Missed most of the second quarter with Douby and Garcia having such ridiculous runs. Came back to score some more in the third and obviously a guy who loves to play at the Warriors' pace. Led us in scoring, but had his thunder stolen by the Douby explosion.
Bibby ( A- ) -- off to a big big start being extremely aggressive. Hit a three, then drove inside at will. In fact in the early going before the kids blew up Mike was about the only guy amongst the starters really going back at the Warriors. As first Garcia, then Douby went off, Mike's own strong game became kind of an afterthought -- just not as fresh or new of a toy under the tree. But unlike the kids, this sort of game for Mike might actually be sustainable and something we could count on, so it might actually be more important. Just kind of did what he wanted and went where he wanted and had everything in control.
Garcia ( B ) -- came in for Artest early once it was clear Ron simply was not going to do anything for us. Hit an early three on what was probably a dumb shot, but went in, so its all smart. Then came back and hit a second one and gave us a big boost there. But perhaps not surprisingly given who we are talking about had an attack of the stupids, and just kept on gunning them and gunning them and gunning them. Despite the misses piling up, was still giving us a major shot in the arm with all court hustle. And while he may have tired late, and hwile I hesitated to stay this high with the grade on a 4-15 night
, it was the most positive impact he's had in a game this season.
Douby ( A ) -- obvious grade here as he had his breakout game, or rather quarter, as he and we went nuts in the 2nd quarter. Racking up 16 pts in 12 min and finally showed something in a regular season game. A lot of something, albeit as a scorer, not a PG. Not surprisngly, not nearly as hot after returning in the 2nd half, but continued to show a good nose for the ball as a very sloppy Warriors team threw the ball all over the court. So breakout game to maybe help him establish himself as an NBA player, and now the question becomes can he sustain? And to a lesser degree, where do the minutes come from if he can? Either way, night to remember for the kid.
Reef ( B+ ) -- had a big second quarter that was kind of lost amongst all the fireworks form the kids. Was scoring easily inside against Murphy, and Biedrins looked more like the scrub of years past against him then the double double machine of this year. End result was 10pts 6rebs in the first half. Slowed after retunring late for a lot of semi-garbagetime minutes and at one point got his shot blovked right out of his hands by Adonal Foyle. Thinking this may have been more A- than B+, bit with all the other high grades trying to estblish some sort of hierarchy here.
Corliss ( B ) -- or B+...again that hierarchy thing. In any case, did not shoot well, but scored well by getting to the line again and again, and in this game must have felt like a real true full sized big able to get on the glass without many of those pesky tall guys snatching the ball away. Got a lot of late minutes, and continued in kind of his semi-mentor role for the kids.
Price ( C ) -- played the whole 4th quarter with marginal results. We lost some of our lead, and Ronnie himself neither scored nor created particularly well.
Muss ( B+ ) -- and see all you have to do to suddenly become a "smarter" coach is win a game. Muss may have even helped in this one, although much of what happened was out of his control. The good/helped: he dipped into his bench early in this one to replace ineffective startes (basically the whole frontcourt) and was rewarded as (and here is the part he had little to do with) kids stepped forward to unexpectedly carry us. Rode them too, and came back to them early in the 2nd half. He also switched over to a zone after the Warriors looked liek they might run us out of the building again, and while frtom the outside that might be absolutely the stupidest coaching move you could ever make against a team of gunners like the Warriors, this time it worked. Or at least contributed. As good as the kids were, the Warriors were at least as bad as we were good, and could just not hit anything inside or out. So, a good looking win to close the year. And while the sustainability is dubious to say the least, it was a win on the backs of our kids. If rebuilkding is coming, that;'s what you would be looking for.
Dunleavy ( A ) -- we were doing plenty good on our own, but Mike Jr. was really our third best player in the 2nd quarter giving us a big shot in the arm with terrible bricks, worse defense, and general incompetence. Hey Mike -- you suck. That's all, thx.
