Second verse, same as the first. Which in this case kinda sucks since the first verse was fugly. Anyway, the starters suck and get no minutes. The scrubbies come in and play for contracts and glory. Cole Aldrich has another career game. Sound familiar? Well here's something that changed: only 1 game of Smart left to go.

Salmons ( C- ) -- This was quite an underwhelming performance, and that's probably being a bit kind. When you're starting SF scores 4 points on 2-8 shooting while giving up 29 points on 10-16 shooting to the guy he was guarding most of the night, it's going to be tough to find anything positive to say. John was pretty much invisible on offense while not having any impact defensively on Durant. Hit a jumper early, then added a dunk late in a second off a pass from Jimmer, had a couple assists early as well and that pretty much sums up his offensive contribution tonight. Came out trying to force the issue a little more in the 3rd, probably in response to Reke being out and nothing came of it. Missed 3 FGA's, forced a bad pass, fouled Durant on a jumper and picked up a tech all in the first six minutes of the 2nd half. Also gave up 7 points to Durant in that span. At that point OKC's lead had jumped from 11 at the half to 20 and it was cruise control for the Thunder from there on out. He did have 5 rebounds which was third on the team and was tied for the most assists on the team with 3, but in my opinion that's more an indictment on the team's overall performance tonight. John did have spurts of good defense but the results just weren't there, both because he had little help from his teammates and because sometimes the offensive player just has more talent, which both Westbrook and Durant have and good defense isn't enough. There's a reason they are All Stars, and even though John did compete against them at times when guarding them, they got the best of him tonight and neither John nor anyone else was able to really even slow them down. --Rain

Thompson ( D ) -- The good news is that JT did a great job on PnR defense and rotated very well on help defense. He had a good number of defensive plays. He also hustled on the offensive boards and though he was only credited with 1 offensive rebound, he worked to keep the ball for the Kings on a few other plays. The bad news is that he consistently found himself out of defensive rebounding position and was beat to the ball multiple times and ended the game with an abysmal 3 rebounds in 26 minutes of work, which is unacceptable. In addition, he shot the ball poorly. He knocked down his first attempt (a wide open 18ft shot from Tyreke) early in the 1st quarter and wouldn’t make another shot till 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter. He missed multiple gimme’s around the basket all night long and only hit half his free-throws. He was re-inserted with about 5 minutes left in the game and had zero impact. He knocked down his 2nd field goal, but missed a number of shots including taking a 3pt shot which he clanked. If JT is taking 3pt shots you know that there isn’t any sort of accountability out there for these guys with the season winding down. An inefficient (2-8) 7 points and 3 rebounds from your starting PF isn’t going to get it done. --Uncia

Cousins ( D- ) -- My my, where do I begin? I'm a huge fan of Cousins, but he just stunk the place out tonight. Actually, most of the starting unit did, for the second night in a row. Its starting to smell in the kitchen! Let me see, what can I find thats positive? Well, Cuz grabbed the first rebound of the game. So there you go! Good start, no? Unfortunately he followed that by getting his shot blocked on the other end. He avoided getting his shot blocked the next time down by cleverly traveling with the ball. I must admit, I rewatched that play over several times in slow Mo, and I didn't see a travel. But Oh well, it is what it is. But bear with me, he wasn't done yet. On his next possesion, he tried to pass the ball over Thabeet, and forgot that he's 10 feet tall. Another turnover. He managed 5 on the night in 25 minutes. Lets see, on his next posession, he drove from the right wing, and had the ball stolen. At this point, he got angry! Probably at the ref's for not giving him some calls (he was fouled a couple of times), and at himself, for playing so poorly. It all came to a head with him dunking the ball and then firing the ball to the ref with a lot of heat on it. Lucky he didn't get a tech at that point, but the ref bit the bullet and let it go, probably knowing it was just Cuz releasing his frustration. He did make another basket in the second half, when he wove his way through 4 defenders and laid it in. Probably the only time in the game he looked like himself. The rest of his points came at the freethrow line. For the most part, it seemed that if he wasn't getting his shot blocked, he was traveling and turning the ball over. I'm sure this isn't the way he wanted to end the season, so I'm hopeful that wednesday's game will be better. I don't know if this is his worse game of the year, but its certainly in the running. --baja

Evans ( A-/INC ) -- For 10 minutes, Tyreke had a heck of a game out there. Two shots in transition, one of two on jumpers, and a nifty layup...that cost him the rest of the season with a quad strain when he went down awkwardly. Fortunately it wasn't anything more serious. Tonight Tyreke spent the first quarter playing more on the ball than we have seen for most of the season, and he did a pretty good job of it - only one assist, but he had at least five good setups (twice to Cousins for a drive into the lane) and saw his recipient come up empty. On the defensive end, about half the time he was playing well, like the time he hustled back in transition and bothered a full-head-of-steam Westbrook into missing a layup, and the other half of the time Westbrook beat him but tended to come up empty. In the end, Russell missed six shots against Tyreke while only coming up with one hit and a pair of free throws. It's just too bad Tyreke didn't get the chance to guard him all game. --Capt.

Thomas ( B- ) -- This was a rollercoaster performance for IT. At one point I had him sitting in D/F territory but he did have an impact in the third scoring the ball and he fought all night on defense against some tough matchups. Started off on a rough note getting stripped near midcourt for a breakaway layup on the opening posession. He followed that up by passing on a three to drive into the paint and miss badly. To start the game Smart was hiding him on Thabo defensively and it seemed to be working out alright. He drew an offensive foul on him on one play but was forced to foul him to stop a basket the next time down. Had a humurous sequence near the end of the first when he lost the ball trying to dribble through Thabeet's legs it seems and moments later stopped a 3 on 1 Thunder fastbreak by standing still. It was painfully apparent all night that OKC was going to take full advantage of his size though with their big guard lineups and as the game went on, and our best hope in countering Westbrook left the floor with a leg injury, Thomas was a constant target for post-ups and drop-off dunks. He got hot in the third hitting two jumpers off of inbounds plays, a wide-open straightaway 3 after Jimmer got doubled and trapped on the sideline, and finishing it off by stepping into another 3 off a long rebound. He took and missed a number of threes during the same stretch as the tendency to go hero took over for a bit, but he was the only thing we had going offensively at the time and this never really turned into the full blowout many of us were expecting. The scoring was counter-balanced by a sloppy night handling the ball as the turnovers kept adding up and eventually outnumbered the assists 2 to 1. There's been a lot of discussion lately about Isaiah's heart and I'll weigh in with this -- there's no question the guy competes out there. He drew the Westbrook matchup in the third and while Westbrook inevitably went off as he usually does, Thomas was bothering him at times with his speed, slipping under screens and slapping at the ball. Durant, Westbrook, Sefelosha, and Jackson all took turns shooting over him and his limitations really stand out against a big athletic team like Oklahoma who utilize a lot of screens to create mismatches all over the floor. Unfortunately heart alone does not win basketball games. Earl Boykins put together a long career as a scorer off the bench who used his size and speed as an advantage to elude defenders. And that's probably what IT should be aiming for. He's not a bad PG, but as the lead guard his defensive limitations are magnified over the course of a game and like Boykins he's really at his best when he's aggressively looking to score. --hrd

Thornton ( D ) -- Thornton's season has gone down in flames for the most part as he's been completely marginalized, if not some night completely forgotten about by his coach. While tonight was better than the previous for Marcus it's still was nowhere near the Marcus we saw last season. With Reke going down with an injury and not returning we needed Marcus to come in and provide an offensive punch. Unfortunately, what we got instead was a largely ineffective 1st half where he went 2-7 for the field(no FT's on the night), while having trouble defensively staying with shooters, either from helping down too much and not recovering or getting lost on screens. The 2nd half was even less eventful as he was mostly forgotten about by Smart in favor of a Jimmer/Douglas/Outlaw lineup and scored a single 2nd half FG while going 1-3 from the floor. He did have 3 rebounds and 3 assists on the night but there wasn't any positive impact to his play for the majority of the evening, and it's a sad state to be in that we can't find more of a use for a guy who was not only very clutch for us late in games the last two seasons but also was a top three option on our team. But it was a rough night tonight for Marcus. When he's not hitting his shots he often times struggles to contribute positively and tonight was one of those night where his shots weren't falling, he never got on a roll and didn't have an impact elsewhere. --Rain

Douglas ( C- ) -- After a string of quality performances, Douglas fell back to Earth a bit tonight. It was more due to the circumstances though than a lack of effort on his part. He brought his usual energy on defense when he came in for Tyreke at the end of the first and did a good job distributing the ball, finding Cousins in the lane and Outlaw for an open three (both missed). Had a rare defensive lapse to start the second quarter as Reggie Jackson blew by him for a layup. This would become a running theme tonight with Jackson. Committed a good hard foul on Jackson to stop a fast break which would soon come back to haunt him as a bad rotation left the one guy in the league least likely to miss a wide-open three lining up with Douglas the only defender in sight. Douglas' attempt to contest took him close enough to Durant for him to fall and sell the four-point play and just like that Douglas' run of second quarter glory was over as his third foul sent him to the bench. I'm not really sure why though as he's not a big and he hasn't been foul prone in the past. He came back midway through the 4th only to watch the Travis Outlaw show along with the rest of our bench crew. He showed good anticipation getting himself in the right spot to pick off a backdoor pass and knocked in a garbage-time 3, his only points on the night, but he never got a chance to be an impact player in this one as OKC just dunked all over us while he watched from the bench. --hrd

Outlaw ( B+ ) -- Outlaw got pretty big minutes in the wing rotation with Tyreke out after the first quarter, and he made a pretty good show of it. His jumper was not falling (all of his five missed shots were jumpers) but he was working in transition, with two breakaway dunks and a rebound turned into a coast-to-coast layup. On top of that, he racked up three assists, which is his highest assist total in over two years (believe it or not!) On defense, Outlaw did a pretty good job on Kevin Durant, but remember that he IS Kevin Durant. Travis played some aggressive defense on Durant at times, denying the pass, but there's not much to be done about that 6'10" fadeaway jumper (I actually thought he blocked Durant once but he did not get credit in the boxscore). In the second half when Smart went to the zone, Outlaw was continually running all over the court to contest perimeter jumpers, and I think none of them fell. Ultimately, Outlaw allowed 11 points on 13 shots, mostly against Durant and in the zone but with a little bit of Ronnie Brewer and Thabo Sefolosha mixed in there. I suppose this is just vintage "late-season Outlaw" (remember his 20-point outburst at the end of last season), and if he could do this all the time he'd be the primary backup SF, but it gets a good grade anyway.--Capt.

Patterson ( C- ) -- Patrick started the 2nd Quarter and would play the entire quarter. Later he got in with 3 minutes left in the 3rd and played till about five minutes left in the contest. In this game it wasn’t that he played poorly, but more that he just didn’t have much of an impact out there tonight. In the full 12 minutes of the 3rd quarter he managed to knock down 2 shots (an open 15ft shot from the baseline, and a half-hook over Durant in the paint) and grab 2 boards. So he was out there, just wasn’t doing a whole lot. He managed a transition bucket and pulled down 3 boards in his 2nd stint out there, but it wasn’t much for the 9 minutes of work. He did set some nice screens and I did like to see him get the ball in the post where you can see that he has some skills down there, but his injured thumb seems to really have taken the air out of his game as he isn’t playing the same as when he first started with us after the trade. --Uncia

Aldrich ( A ) -- Thank god, a bright spot! Mr. Double Double Man returns for part two of his short saga. It would be easy to say that most of what he did, or at least half, was in garbage time. But the truth is, it wasn't. The Kings made a big enough run to make the Thunder just a tad nervous, and get all the starters back in the game. 23 minutes of playing time resulted in 12 points and 13 rebounds. Lets see, Cuz played 25 minutes and had 7 points and 6 rebounds. If I just came from Mars, I'd think that Aldrich was the starter on the team. At least based on performance tonight. No, I'm not implying that Aldrich should be our starting center. But I'am implying that just maybe, he deserves more minutes. Both past and in the future. He was fun to watch. He didn't force anything. He just let the game come to him, and he took what was there, and he did it well. All of his points came at the basket, either by way of offensive rebounds, and putbacks, or by cutting to the basket, recieving a pass and dunking. His only mistake of the night was on a cut to the basket he recieved a nice pass from Jimmer, which he took his eye of for a moment, and lost it. I feel he was robbed by the official scorer tonight. I had him down for two blocked shots, and was surprised to see the official stat sheet showed him with none. Tough scorer! Based on what I've seen in the last two games, and in several other games, I believe he's someone we should seriously consider keeping on the team. He brings something thats been lacking for quite a while. Post intimidation! Blocked shots or no blocked shots, he changed a lot of shots tonight. Good job Cole! --baja

Fredette ( D ) -- I'm going to pick on Jimmer a bit here, so you might want to avert your eyes. Smart asked him to check Westbrook after he subbed in midway through the second and the resulting possessions pretty much set the tone for his night. First possession - Westbrook gets space to work at the free throw line extended with Jimmer in a defensive stance. Serge Ibaka comes in and Jimmer is screened into the next zip code as Westbrook drives into the lane unimpeded. Second possession - same play, same result. Third possession - Jimmer anticipates the screen this time and attempts to cheat but Westbrook cuts back and Jimmer is lost on the play again. At this point Salmons switched onto Westbrook and Jimmer switched to Sefolosha. Fourth possession - Jimmer gets killed on an off-ball screen this time as Thabo is wide open cutting baseline but Westbrook opts to shoot the three instead. The poor guy is in desperate need of a coach who teaches defense. His lateral quickness is good enough but he just gets lost on almost every screen. Thomas and Douglas in their minutes were maybe not targeted as ferociously, but they managed to contain the penetration more often than not either by going under the screen and recovering or sticking close enough to the ballhandler that they could slip the screen. Granted somebody should be calling these screens out and the switches are coming too late so the whole team needs coaching on how to play defense together. We can hang with half of the teams out there by outscoring them but going up against a well-run offense, we're just hopeless. As OKC built a lead and ran away with this one in the third and fourth it was IT and Jimmer in the backcourt together for a long stretch getting posted up and just generally abused defensively. Offensively he hasn't much better, at one point shooting 1-7 before a late burst. 8 of his 11 points here came in garbage-time including a ridiculous four point play with 7 seconds on the clock and OKC leading by 13. Alright, you can look now. Since that's out of the way, I should also be fair and point out that he's made some big strides this season as a playmaker and he set up some nice looks tonight which just weren't converted. He also had a pair of steals at the end of the second quarter, the first leading to a fast break bucket and the second breaking up OKC's last second inbounds play. This game was defined by OKC's ability to get to the basket over and over again though and unfortunately Fredette ended up being one of their favorite victims. --hrd

Haven't been to any games this year but you can bet your life I am going to be in the lower bowl in one of the top 10 rows for this last game against the Clippers coming up. This is the team I grew up cheering as a grade schooler Reggie Theus etc., the team who's Mitch richmond led playoff run against, ironically Seattle I supported as a high schooler. The team who I lived and died with in the glory years of my early and mid 20's.. and the team, admittedly, I mostly havent been able to watch in my late 20's and early 30's.. So now as a grown man in his mid 30's, I have to be in Arco (will always be Arco to me) and support my team for what could be (though I highly doubt it) the last time on Wedsday

Got to give Cole Aldrich credit a guy labelled as a "scrub" by most comes in and busts his *** every minute he gets.

no he doesn't have great hands or a high skill level, but just goes out there and does what he can.

No reason he can't come off the bench and give you productive minutes on a good team.

So I guess you would be interested to Meet Mitch Richmond in Person tonight?

He will be at LowBrau Brewery tonight Tues 16th for a crowndowntown event to promote his new charity

See www.crowndowntown.org for details

See ya all there!!!

Actually, I would take Aldrich every time over Ostertag. Unless of course, by "lite" you're meaning actual size.

Er...maybe the Tag we had. Maybe. But Tag was another one of those players that uunfortunately the Sacto fanbase just wasn't prepared to embrace from style to method of acquisition. He was however a long time borderline starter in the NBA, and enormous. He started for 2 Finals teams. Unless Aldrich suddenly wants to be who he has been the last two outings, he's a full class of player behind what Tag was in his prime.

To be fair, I've always despised Ostertag - from his time with Utah and even, admittedly, during his time in sac. So maybe that may have something to do with my response. However, I also feel like he benefited from Sloan, Malone and Stockton during his time in Utah, more than anything. They made him better than he actually was, IMO. I do feel like he knew how to use his size which, to be fair, is a talent in-itself. Pair the system he was in and him knowing how to use his size and I think that's what made him decent.

Either way, if Cole can do what he did the past 2 games, consistently, and I believe he can - then yes, I'd still take him every day over Utah-Tag. If we're comparing Aldrich to Sac-Tag, then I take Cole absolutely no matter what.

Thats the difference between what we've seen from Cole (so far) and James Johnson, who played himself to the deep bench, even under Smart by trying to be someone he wasn't.

Completely off topic but i noticed John Henson pulled down 25(!!) rebounds the other night with 7 blocks. He was someone i remember a lot of people being high on draft time.
