Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Okay -- first of all yay, and a very nice teamwide response to the potential chemistry catastrophe of the Cousins incident. Interesting to see Donte in particular, maybe still on a testosterone high, play his best overall game in months.

Secondly my main grades computer is still down, so if necessary I will do it off of this one, but would rather not, and the other grades caught in limbo will come when the other one recovers.

Casspi ( C ) -- came up with what is becoming his completely traditional 10pts 7rebs on subpar shooting -- check out his last 6 games during our losing streak against the elites and now Phx: 8pts 7reb 3-8FG vs. BOS, 10pts 6reb 3-10FG v. Spurs, 10pts 7rebs 3-11FG v. UTH, 8pts 6rebs 4-7FG v. DAL, 14pts 9rebs 5-13FG v. OKC, and now 10pts 7reb on 4-13 v. the Suns. Tonight was faced with a minutes challenge from a resurgent Donte Greene, but got his normal 30+ when we basically decided to plkay the game with no backup guards at all -- Reke and Beno both played 43 min, and for the minutes when they were out Donte or Omri slid over to give us a huge size advantage at SG. Early in the game it looked like we were going to make some attempts to get him going in the post against Carter, but not much came of it. Was doing a nice job moving the ball in the early going, which you don't always see out of him, but it was rarely rewarded as nobody but Reke could hit the broad side of the ocean before the break. Was active but never really effective after half. Got out on the break for several times as guys foudn him streaking ahead for leakouts, but kept missing his threes (0-4 on the night) and on one play drove inside and missed three short little flips within 6 feet on one possesison (of course the good sign was he got those 2 offensive boards between). He was not terrible, but it was once again the Omri stadard -- some crap, 10pts 6-7rebs and bad shooting. Not an F or even a D without getting burned on defense, but just a pretty low level start as he, Beno and Jason weren't the guys to provide Reke with support on the night (nor Landry for a half).

Thompson ( B- ) -- big flying dunk on the break early, and hit his first 3 shots. Started missing chippees though and after he had to swing to center for Daly, was having problems stopping Gortat. Worse for his minutes, foul trouble loomed once more, and with Samkeem dominating the middle and Landry's bad case of incompetence clearing up, Jason's hackitis again limited him to less than 20 minutes. Was not really a bad night for Jason though -- mostly seemed to be helping, in particular when teamed with Daly to give us the big frontline size advantage. We just didn't need him with both Daly and Landry cleaning up inside after half.

Dalembert ( A ) -- hey, who needs a Boogie when you have a Samkeem? Check out the video clip above from espn for samples of the fun. Immediately in there for defensive boards from the beginning, but the Suns figured out the only wat to slow a stud of his magnitude, and he quickly had 2 fouls. But he, and we were going well, and we left him in there to try to play through it and did not pull him until he had obviously lost his rhythm and forced up a bad too quick turnaorund effectively triggering the Suns break. But all the Suns managed to do was make Sam mad, and you DON'T want to make Sam mad. Started the second half with a spectacular drive through traffic for the reverse. Kept on avoiding the fouls that would take him out of the game, and survived long enough to come ip with some foot offensive boad work, and a series of partial blocks and deflections on defense as our energy picked up and all of a sudden you could see us competing again with yet another better by record opponent. Showed the Suns who The Man was in the 4th, starting off wiht a nice hook, then a baseline jumper, a spectacular follow of a Casspi airball flip on the break. And then made you laugh coming up with maybe the sealer to push the lead back to 7 with a drive all the way to the hoop form the top of the key (in the highlight vid above). Seriosuly who knew he had all this stuff? Should be noted that most, but not all, off Gortat's best work came against other guys, and for Sammy you had a game with no holes. 18pts 15 rebs, shot great (8-12), played defense...seriously, who knew he had this much junk to his game?

Udrih ( C ) -- missed several little chippees early as this game was a huge struggle for him through about three quarters. In fact maybe the most amazing thing about it was that depsite his inability to get anything done on either end of the court through three quarters, he, like Tyreke, again went over 40 minutes as we just entirely gave up on our backup guards and ran the two main guys into the ground, with Casspi/Donte filling in the rest of the backcourt miutes. Got one early jumper off of nice ball movement with every King touching the ball, got a second one to rattle in off a Reke kick just before half. Otherwise missed everything, and was getting rather easily torched by Nash as well. Kept on missing chippee after chippee as he and Landry were anchors around our ankles for us in the first half. Began to wake up a little in the 3rd -- only hit one shot, a three set up by Reke early n the period. But as the Daly/Donte/Landry crew began to bring major energy to the game, Beno again picked up on it and began hustling around and scrapping. And when Reke finally had to sit down after playing the first 38 minutes of this one nonstop, Beno stepped forward with multiple asssits to just about everybody and directed us out to a semi-commanding lead. But ironically he also played a part in tearing down that lead a few minutes later with back to back errors as he turned it over, and then fouled Nash outside the three point line to singlehandedly break the momentum he'd help us build and get it back to a 2 possession game. Stepped up in the clutch to hit his final shot, another three, at the 2:40 mark BVut then cntinued his foul the 3pt shooter in the final seconds reign of terror, sending Nash to the line again for 3 FTs with 28 seconds to go. Just duh Beno. I mean DUH. Overall not a good game for Beno as he continued his weeks long struggle, but he did pick the best quarter (4th) for his best play

Evans ( B- ) -- this game was about as easy to understand as any game by a player you are ever going to see. Started off the game with a blast, completely carrying a starting unit which was otherwise really struggling offensively through the first 15 minutes or so. He started off with a strong take to the hoop, but that troublesome jumper was on in the early going as well and he drained a midranger, and then stepped out to pop a three. Surprisingly Carter tried to work him in the post early, to mixed reuslts. Persistently aggressive in the early going, and was drawing fouls when he couldn't force his way through to the hoop. His scoring was all that kept us in contact until other guys sklowly begant to wake up. But he had played 45 minutes the night before, and in this one he would get no rest at all until the 4th quarter, adn you could just see the legs begin to go on him. Just not the same player by the end of the half, when he made 2 TOs and airballed a three, and in the third every jumper came up short until he stepped up to knock down a big three with 30 seconds to go in the quarter to cut the lead to 1. Turned the ball over up top in the early 4th on what just looked like a tired play, but did not give up on it and raced back and saved the hoop with a foul, his 4th. Seemed like maybe a futile play, but when Hakim Warrick stepped to the line and missed both FTs, turned out it had saved us 2pts. Also waved to Westphal afterwards and went to the bench for the first time in the game -- 38 minutes in. Didn't do much, or need to do much, down the stretch of this one with Samkeem and Dontenique dominating the cutely helpless little Suns. But made a final goof that fortunately turned out to just be something to laugh about -- a terrible terrible decsion to randomly throw an alley oop pass that turned into a turnover with 22 seconds to go and us up 5 -- just duh! Dribble it around, get fouled, hit the FTs kid! But Nash missed the three the other way, we went back to the line and sealed it, and a ggreat sign for the team was when an obviously embarrassed Evans shook his head and everybody came up to him and patted him on the head and had a laugh about it.

Landry ( B+ ) -- such a tough grade. Came in and with us needing interior scoring in the first half he just gave us nothing, inside or out. I mean nothing as in embarrassingly bad nothing. Started the game 0p-6 from the field, 0-2 from the line, missing inside, and missing out. Might have wanted to try to guard Channing Frye out near the three point line too. Finally came out of a timeout at the 2:20 mark of he half and just charged inside looking to draw a foul, got to the line and finally hit the pair. And maybe that was the breakthrough moment for him, because when he got into the game in the third he just attacked and attacked and attacked the still soft Suns interior. Slammed inside for back to back +1s, pounded the offensive glas, and scored 10pts in 2 minutes in the third. Was not as dominant as the the all star Daly/Donte duo in the 4th, but kept being productive. Nice post move out of the timeout at the 4:00 mark to push the lead back to 5. Made a smart play on the inbounds play at at the 37 second mark, refusiong to throw it to an open Donte -- our worst FT shooter, and taking the timeout instead. Of course Donte put the lie to suhc tactics as he stepped up and drained two shortly afterwards. How silly of Carl to worry about his 50% FT shooting on the season. So a true tale of two halves game. I find it virtually impossible to give out an A for a game like that, but Carl was so horid before half that it does just highlight that he came pretty close to putting up 20-10 in a HALF for us there.

Greene ( A ) -- good for Donte I say. A day after getting mugged by his own teammate, the mild mannered Clark Kent of the team came out and flashed a little of the SuperDonte that we haven't seen much of this year, and came up with one of his best games of the season. And it was really from the very start in this one, although his late charge in the 4th was a lot of fun. Came int the game and picked off an inbounds pass, then passed it back and forth with Reke to finally get the layup. Lively on the glass. There were some forces, but generally looked as aggresive as we've seen him for a long time, so maybe the confrontation could actually be a positive for him. Came on so strong in the 4th that it was effectively he, not Reke, who was the goto guy dwon the stretch. Canned the long three in the mid 4th to push the lead to 8. Hit a tough turnaround banker at the 2:00 mark to push the lead briefly back to 7. Followed that with a huge +1 at the 1:30 mark. Even came up with 2 clutch FTs at the 30 second mark to help us seal it. Only made one or two mistakes the whole way, and all those wild shots that would have gotten him benched on a normal day were falling as he was a major reason we pulled this one off. So good for Donte. With his status in the air, the trade deadline coming up, you never know when one of these might be his last as a King. Glad he could give us a show.

Jackson ( INC ) -- in at center in deperation in the first half with both Daly and JT out with fouls, and was no match for Gortat. Did however randomly hit a deperation buzzer beating three right at the close of the half to save our bacon and cut it to 7. So a moment of glory to keep us within striking distance.

in progress...

Have to vote for Dally. Did the dirty work, and hit some big shots. Donte was great. But Dally was the major difference in the paint, which changed the game, in the 2nd half. Landry played well to. This should make the next 2 days much easier for these guys, and maybe help smooth things over, and take some if the attention off what happened.

Great win!

My least favorite player (Landry), and the guy who I feel is extremely overrated around here (Greene), both came up huge in this one! Props to those guys. If they can give us more games like tonight, I might change my tune on em.

Dally going all Dwight Howard was fun to watch too. Suns have such a terrible frontline. And we thought we had a bad one a couple years back with Miller/SAR/Corliss!

I actually expected a win going into this one... We played the elites tough. The Suns arnt even close to elite. If we had Cousins in this game I honestly think we would have controlled it from the opening tip.

First win by Kings in Phoenix since Nov. '05. Nice team effort and coaching wasn't bad either! I voted for Sammy with a nod to Carl. Donte was nice. That dumb pass by Reke at the end which could have opened the door for disaster drops him in the poll - Beno was probably just as effective overall as #13 tonight.

Great team effort. My top grades to Dalembert followed by Beno, Donte and Landry. Carl almost made the top but his first half was painful. Ball movement throughout and really good defense by everyone.

Overrated? Ninety percent of the board wants to trade him for a handful of beans.

Beno was horrid for most of the night.

Great team victory. Hope DMC was watching. In order for our dreams of seeing the Kings become elite again, Tyreke and DMC have got to be able to play together!

Great effort from everyone tonight. Donte and Dally both played great, but I give the nod to Greene for getting the clutch shots down the stretch to help put this away.

Interesting wrinkle that a day after Cousins blows up at him for (in Cuz's mind) blowing the game, Greene helps lock up a win in his absence. Maybe a little intra-team rivalry was all that he needed to get a spark?

Beno was horrid for most of the night.

I think the past couple of weeks have really shown how much we NEED a productive third guard. Beno is very...average. Reke is pretty good, but without a good consistent third guard who can shoot, we have a huge whole. Beno and Reke playing 42, 43 minutes per game just isn't healthy.

^ Yep!

Hopefully that 3rd guard will come this offseason. A solid scoring guard shouldnt be this difficult to get, they're a dime a dozen in the league.

Maybe not healthy but tonight a winning combination. I hope Beno can be "horrid" like that every night.

Nice win on the road for the Kings especially after last night's Cuz meltdown. Sammy had a very good night and took advantage of his opportunity. Let's get some payback on Tuesday. Go Kings!!

It was a great game with a win. Wonderful. Probably a help to the Cousins/team difficulty. Talk about choosing who was best or contributed the most tonight seems a little counterproductive since this was really a team victory more than most. Each of those listed above plus those that weren't have reason to feel proud and satisfied with the results. Even Cousins. Talk of who we don't have or where we need to add isn't near as much fun for me as seeing the guys we have win one.

From the 2-3 minute mark of the 1st quarter all the way through the end of the game, I was expecting this team to get a win.

We've played a horrendously tough schedule over the last few games and we've been so close to getting some victories. In watching tonight, the Suns didn't seem to have much energy, and the Kings just looked like the better and more talented team.

Personally the thing I was most pleased about was the Kings knocking down their free-throws to close out the game.

Did anyone here actually believe that Donte would hit his +1 FT as well as the two when he was deliberately fouled? How about when Sammy went to the line?

I actually expected at best to go 1 of 2 by both players, but they went and calmly knocked everything down.

If they did not make all their FTs, they would have put a lot more pressure on themselves, and we might have seen another gut-wrenching loss.

So making those FTs were key, and I was extremely happy that the two players who did the most to step up their games in this one (Donte & Sammy) also did not disappoint at the free-throw line.

Great win for the Kings, and hopefully on the high that this win provides, we can get out from under the ugly post-Thunder incident with minimal damage.

It was nice to see a win, I'm sure everyone else has noticed as well, but is there any way we could cut back on the iso-Tyreke jumper plays that occur through out the game? Only based on the last two games v. Thunder and v. Suns, I feel like we have too many possessions where Tyreke dominates the ball, doesn't pass it. He may attempt a drive, find the lane clogged and he pulls up for his fading jumper which unfortunately misses 1/3 or 1/4 of the time. I'm probably preaching to the crowd, but I'm a little disappointed that Tyreke didn't improve as a passer nor as a shooter this season compared to last. His main skill is still the drive and finish or get fouled and shoot free throws.

You know at a certain point when a guy is putting up 21pts 4reb 7ast for you, and averaging 20pts 5rebs 6ast for your team on 45% shooting since his mom slapped some sense into him around Christmas time, you kind of have to step back and see the larger picture. Doesn't mean the larger picture doesn't include flaws, but what 21yr old player doesn't have flaws? Does mean that flaws or not its an extremely productive package once it got past the early season doldrums.

My biggest beef with Tyreke: his jumpshots. First half he's taking them in good rhythm, not fading away and whowouldaguessedit he makes em. Second half comes, and he turns on the KobeBryantFadeAwayShow, minus the actual footwork, and POOF there goes his shot. I really do not understand what can make a player change his shooting form halfway in almost every game. Tired legs or something?

Tired legs or something?

This game at least that was completely obvious. After playing 44 min the night before, we played him the full 24 in the first half, and the first 14 of the second half, and you could just see the legs go. In the 4th after that turnover up top and race back to foul the guy and save the hoop, he motioned to Westphal that he needed a blow.

Wow! So let me get this straight. In a summer where Evans was supposed to get a shooting coach, train for endurance like a boxer, and get in overall physical fitness, he in reality did NONE of those things. Choosing to not get into shape or train in the offseason to improve his shot or his play making ability. Sure, Evans is a good one on one player. But this isn't a one on one league. It is team basketball, and all hands are needed on deck. Lets hope that the entire team gives the next game and all the games after that their best effort and go on some sort of win streak that will put Sacramento back on the NBA Map! Cousins incident aside, this team has been looking better each night. Greene needs to be more consistent. Coasting for 4 games then playing hard in one is no way to run an NBA Career. Coming into camp FAT and using camp to get into shape is unacceptable for a young player who dont know what it takes to compete in the league at a high level. Donte came to camp 25 lbs overweight. We can not ignore that kind of lack of dedication. I am willing to believe that Petrie didn't forget Greene coming to camp fat and expecting to be handed the starting spot. Geoff Petrie watched a promising young player just give up over the summer and not get in shape for a team that Donte knew wasn't going to be a contender because they didn't acquire anyone and didn't try to become competitive. Next season however, after the Kings shoot their proverbial free agent wad of cash, Petrie may see Greene's lack of dedication and contribution to the poor play of the team this season, and package Greene and Casspi and a bag of chips for a real small forward who can consistently hit shots and play NBA quality defense.

There are all sorts of swing man tweeners who can fill up the basket on the open market. The Kings need a real small forward and a real backup at the guard positions. Not CBA Scrubs like they have this year. Pooh is Poo, and Head is dead. Kings need real bench production from the guard spots. Look at Dallas! They bring in Jason Terry off the bench. Terry would be a starter on the Kings. Geoff Petrie has a ways to go to improve this roster. Hopefully the Maloofs decide how they want their franchise to look and spend the money to bring in veteran talent like 99% of the other teams have. If the Maloofs DONT spend that free agent money and remain at the bottom of the salaries in the league, then they want to move the team and are saving money to do so. This offseason is put up or shut up for the Maloofs. Let's see if all their posturing is lying or if it is a reality. We will get another good draft pick this year and we should have enough free agent cap space to bring in a veteran guard who can score from 3 and defend. They also need to trade or acquire in free agency a small forward who can consistently score and defend. And what they cant get in free agency they need to get in trades. Kings have a lot of young pieces who may or may not fit on this roster. Either way there needs to be a significant turnover on this roster to make the Kings competitive once again. Keep Cousins and Evans, and swap out the rest for real NBA talent. The Bottom payroll team in the league should finish in last place. Maybe the Maloofs knew this? Time will tell where this team is headed. Hopefully heading into next season as a contender for a playoff spot.
