Don't Make Me Use The Bat
And here I thought I was almost going to miss this one and have to record it. Too bad I found a way around that. Oh, and for all of you who for some reason decided to miss a Thursday night game against OKC, and instead tune in for a Saturday night (when you really should have something better to do) game against the Suns...you dumb. :p

So...we were spectacularly stupid this game, mysteriously so, as all bleeping night long we made ridiculously bad decisions on what to shoot and what not to shoot. If was like somebody had a magic 8 ball out there, and whatever it said to do our guy would do, no matter what the defense looked like, time on clock, or game situation.

Biggest blame ON the court goes to Tyreke, who has an amazing stat attached to him where we are 8-4 when he scores 20+ pts, and now 2-13 when he does not. As he goes, we go, and he just can't have games like this. Just can't.

However, I was also unamused by the shooting PG we drafted who could neither shoot nor handle the ball well enough to play PG against pressure defense, the saavy veteran leader we signed who made some of the dumbest plays of the night, nor especially the coach, who I thought basically ****ed up every single rotation of the entire night, never had the right guys together, overplayed guys who sucked, underplayed guys who didn't, and in general chipped into this loss as much as he helped the win on Thursday. We lost by 14, but never made a single real run in this one.

So I'm depressed. You depressed? Good. Girls.

tombraiderlaracroftgirl.jpg

As for flavor of girls? I had something else in mind, but I think I'll pluck a request, although maybe not quite in the same FFF cup spirit in which it was offered. At least not all of the time. So we're going to do British Babes, because really for such a scruffy little island they've done quite well over the years. I'm not an Anglophile per se, but I generally like the Brits. Tough stubborn people at their peak. Conquered the largest empire in history marching around in bright red coats begging to be shot at. And there weren't many of them either. England itself is only about a third the size of California. Even if you make it the whole UK with Scotland and Northern Ireland its still only a little over half. And they chopped down all their trees in the Industrial Revolution. Their idea of a forest we call a grove. (Nottingham forest is now literally about 500 acres). And they got real big into sheep back there, so most of the land was walled off and their aren't many wild animals left either. And their mountains...if you've ever been there you should go to their "peaks" district just for a laugh. I built sand volcanos that were bigger than that when I was a kid. Feel kind of bad for them, like maybe we should lend them a real mountain or something since we've got spares. Would anybody really notice if one of the Rockies went missing? Or maybe we could send them a volcano from the Cascades. Those things are trouble anyway. Anyway...scruffy little island, in fact many people even like to complain about the weather, although personally I prefer it to all the boring sun worshipping by all you warm weather wimp types. Unless of course you are a girl. And hot. And prone to wearing bikniis and lounging around in said sun, in which case you may still be a warm weather wimp, but you are my kind of warm weather wimp....Now where was I? Oh yes, scruffy little island. But they've done great things. And one of their great things has been producing a long line of hotties. And hotties speaking in cute little British accents too (although to a Brit the idea of a single "British" accent is comical, as they themselves draw so many lines between them they can tell which side of the street somebody is from just from how they talk. Not to mention of course that they invented the damn language, so its we who have the accents.). But anyway, time to get a move on, so again, welcome to Pretty Girls: British Babes Edition. Now onto the grades:

Boxscore

Salmons (D ) -- you know, I highlighted Reke's off game because he is often very very good, and when he flames out, that knocks out a big pillar of what you are trying to do. But there were a bunch of people struggling in this one, its just that we are so used to them sucking it feels like just a shrug. Exhibit A: Salmons, John. So John, who once gave us a 21-11-10 triple double in an earlier lifetime, sank back with a nifty 4-1-1 outing this time. Hit his first little pullup, and in fact had both of his hits in the early going. It was an upside game for him because from the start we looked uncomfrotable, and John himself was working hard on defense but having all kinds of problems against non-threats like Ghost of Hill and Diudley. Picked up three fouls in the first 9 minutes trying to stay with those thoroughbreds, neither of whom was averaging double figures coming into this game. As we often have seemed to do, came out of the halftime making it a priority to get Salmons, of all our guys, going. He bricked it and promptly disappeared. Not from the lineup though, as whatever pictures he has of Smart with those sheepmust be truly perverse. Maybe involving mutual shearing or something. Most annoygin thing about his, and half of our lineup's games was the sheer stupidity of their shot selction. The Phoenix Suns absolutely rubbed our noses in our lack of shooting, often collapsing all 5 guys down into the paint to form a little ball of ben gay and dentures, and time and time again fools like Salmosn would absolutely refuse to take the wide open jumpers they were thus presented on the perimeter, and instead put the ball on teh floor, dribble around like Travis Outlaw, and then force up some heavily contested crap into some geezers chest. I couldn't be a coach in the face of such dumbness. I would be calling guys over to the sideline and slapping them silly on national TV.
Kelly_LeBrock_18297_11.jpg

Kelly LeBrock -- now as she has aged there has grown to be rather too much of Ms. LeBrock, but back in her heyday the Weird Science/Lady In Red hottie was routinely listed on all the hottest women lists.

Thompson ( D+ ) -- minutes limited tonight by game dynamics and lack of brains, both his and Smart's. Was having problems with the Suns length from the very beginning, and just did not seem to recognize ro adjust to the Suns 5 man defensive 3 second violation strategy. By various means, some inattentiveness, some being caught up in pick and pop situations, was just not staying in the vincinity of Frye to prevent all the long range jumpers you know you are going to get there. And Jason has been around. He has seen that wuss play before. There is just no excuse for not guarding him out there. Had one or two good hustle plays, including a great hustle tip finisih on the break to star the second quarter, but otherwise like most of the rest of the team got frustrated, got in foul trouble, kept ramming inside to get the ball knocked away, and with Fry having enough time to do his nails before shooting with JT constantly leaving him, Smart decide to go small, as in TINY, and jason was out of a job.
Elizabeth_Hurley-chicki-young-skin_thumb_585x795.jpg

Elizabeth Hurley -- and somewhere back there in the early 90s Miss LeBrock handed her title of resident British hottie over to Miss Hurley, who if you have ever seen her in movies from when she was young, kind of came out of nowhere to be world class head turner.

Cousins ( B ) -- not as effective as his numbers would suggest, but still probably our best overall guy (in fact there was only one even remote competitor, and I'm pretty sure that guy just got scored on again right now, and the game has been over for 8 hours). Again had problems with verticality -- and when you see this kid now just routinely putting up 20-10 type numbers every night, imagine what he will be if he ever figures a coutner for that issue (like for instance how about stop, gather, and dunk). In any case got his first shot blocked by Gortat inside (as amazingly we have now been blocked 28 times in the last two games alone) and his second altered as the Suns response to having 2 of the top 10 at the rim scorers in the NBA facing them was to have every man swarm the paint. Got smart and got his first hoop when he went off the dribble, and then started working that vein. Out of an early timeout added a gorgeous spin-to-step-through-up-and-under combo move that maybe 5 guys in the league are capable of in the league. On the other hand got off balance and actualy fell down on a Gortat post move. Always embarrassing. Big 11pt first quarter for him. But things went downhill for us from there. Didn't use him when he came back in because we were too busy feeding Jimmer? That sounds idiotic, but that's what it felt like. And meanwhile DeMarcus was picking up his 2nd and 3rd fouls and went back to the bench wasted by a bunch of stupid smalball guards who just could not shoot or pass when they should have tonight. Picked up his 4th foul early in the 3rd quarter, but Smart just left him in (a characteristic trait of this coach) and DeMarcus did himself proud playing through it and never picking up another. Threw in some very talented moves, but also joined the rest of the team in a seeming brain fog cast by the cagey old Suns wise men. Repeatedly passed up 16-18 foot jumpers that are just becoming near automatic forn him. And he just wouldn't take them either -- it was the whole damn team with some sort of bizarre disease. Maybe some mobster threatened to put a hit out on their pet hampsters if anybody took an easy shot, I don't know. On the night had problems against Gortat, who matched his strength, but overwhelmed the rest of the Suns frontline whenever Gortat was out. End numbers were a little padded out, as DeMarcus played till the final buzzer, Gortat did not, and DeMarcus added quite a few numbers in the final few minutes.

Kate Beckinsale -- and then sometime around 8-10 years ago Miss Hurley passed the stunning British beauty baton on to Miss Beckinsale, who has long been my superhottie of choice btw. Such a classy stunner. Alas, the relationship between time and age being what it unfortunately is, there will come a day when Kate too has to pass the baton. Fortunately the Brits have been really good about always producing a successor to keep the tradition going.

Thornton ( B- ) -- and here was our second of our two players of the night, as apart from a few minutes here or there of roleplayer work, that was about everybody who showed up. Again illustrating how delicate our situation is, where even 2 of our 3 Big Three guys scoring 20+ isn't enough without the third guy because we just aren't getting anything from the bench. Marcus even did something truly radical in this one, both taking and making shots. We may have to trade him now as he clearly isn't with the program. Actually posted him on Nash to start the game in what I thought was a clever move to try to prevent them hiding Nash from Reke. Unfortunately it never went anywhere. Was quiet in the first quarter, but upon returning in the 2nd gave us a boost of energy and scoring as our bench guys just looked flat out bad. Had another burst of long balls in the late third/early 4th that kept us within megaphone distance of the Suns for a while, but again it didn't ignite anything and we could never get more than 1 guy taking good shots at any one time. Would like to give him a better grade than this, but there is a problem that has been concerning for some time, and was especially bad again tonight: the defense. Turned Jared Duley into an All Star, as both his lack of size but especially lack of discipline is just hurting him almost every night now. He's constantly leaving his man, and these slow easy to guard roleplayers' eyes are lighting up as they get the open shots they need. Alternately we try to put him on PGs, and they are just too quick. Having Jimmer struggle on defense is bad enough, but we need Thronton to at least be average. Right now the best defensive guard other than Reke on the team is 5'9".
Lucy-Pinder-Hot100-2011-3.jpg

Lucy Pinder -- with this photo I thought I would just cut right to the chase about the reasons for this request from the party it came from -- one of the current queens of the Britsh glam model/page 3 girl scene. Ask 10 guys what color her eyes are, see how they do.

Evans ( D- ) -- despite this game being a fail for Reke, it was more a D-ish fail than an F fail. We absolutely need more, much more, from him, and part of the frustration to this one is that there COULD have been more here. In the early going he looked lively. He had several near steals, one of the reasons for the 1-9 was that he actually reacted somewhat appropriately to the collapsing defense for a while, pulling up for several of the midrange jumpers everybody wants him to take. But he just couldn't hit any of them. And then once that was established...just ran out of answers. While we badly needed him to figure it out and score (and BTW, I seem to recall Hill being a problem in the past with his size and flopping saavy on drives), of perhaps larger concern was not just Reke, but our entire team reacting as if they had never before in their sweet innocent young lives seen a collapsing defense. It was bizarre. I could have drawn up on a frickin napkin an offense that would have 3 guys wide open shots every single possession against the Suns the way they were playing defense, Jason you stand at the elbow, don't move you dolt. Shoot the jumper if the ball comes to you. Salmons, corner. Do NOT dribble. Catch and shoot. Thornton angle. Ditto dummy. Cousins left block. Reke dribble drive or get it to DeMarcus and leave the area. You guys go to the hoop. When they collapse, KICK IT. And Kick guys, when the ball is kicked SHOOT IT. Gee. I am a genius. But apparently I am, because we didn't do that, and Reke didn't do that nearly enoguh. Could not find the passing lanes, and when he did pass 75% of the time the idiot on the other end would start dribbling around looking for ways to get a worse shot than he started with. Result? Reke could not score, and despite the Suns entire defense being geared around stopping he and Cousins, could not consistently create open shots because of it. That does not work. Limited a bit from having a chance to redeem himself in the second half by more substitution strangeness from Smart, who overplayed equally ineffective backups while keeping Reke out until he would have had to have been on a career best roll to get us back into it.

Keeley Hazell -- also specifically requested, one of Lucy's challengers for the Queen of Page 3 title. If you aren't picking up on a theme in these photos you just may not be the sharpest tool you know.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bench

Thomas ( D+ ) -- really no more adept at figuring out the superadvanced everybody crowd the paint defense the Suns were running than was Reke, and unlike Evans who quit shooting when he realized it wasn't working, IT just forced and forced and ultimately hurt us this night. Best moments were early, when he hit a three in the corner from Reke, and even when he bricked another three, but knew where it was coming off, and darted to the corner to snatch the rebound. But as his minutes continued and in particular in the 4th, looked more and more out of control and was jsut overpenetrating and forcing stuff that was not there. Really strange game that way -- the whoole damn team did it all night. It was like we had a really worng scouting report before the game and were totally dedicated to it or something. Nobody was thinking on their feet.

Gemma Atkinson -- and going for the hat trick! Moderately attractive.

Greene ( B ) -- not quite sure what its going to take for Donte to get a little respect, but once again was maybe the best of a bad bench bunch. Played pretty well in all his stretches, and yet this time in order to avoid playing him Smart went so far as to start inserting our weakass little swingmen as PFs. BVad enough he can't play at his natural SF. Now you are putting in 190lb 6'7" guys as PFs because Donte isn't undersized enough? Guess I couldn't be an assistant coach either, because I'd probably get canned after I slapped the ehad coach for beign stupid. So anyway Donte came in and ran the floor for the dunk from IT, then a few minutes later made a nice dropoof pass on the move to Hayes for a layup in the early second. Good energt as maybe the best of a shaky looking bench crew again, and did a nice job drawing the foul to close the 2nd and -- well, minor issue, he actually traveled on the play, but hey, you know we'll take whatever we can get. Hit the pair to get the lead down to 9 going into halftime. For his not entirely stinky first half play was richly rewarded in the second half by gettign to play the final 3 minutes of garbagetime. Good coaching man. Stepped into a three at the 2 minute mark, but too little too late.
keira-knightley-79.jpg

Keira Knightley -- I thought I would go about as far from the Page 3 girls as I could for this one to a lady for whom a large part of the appeal has always been in her face (and what lies behind it). But my what a face. The camera absolutely loves closeups with her.

Hayes ( D ) -- had a couple of plays in the early minutes of his first stint, getting a layup off the nice dropoff from Donte, and then sneaking around for a help block from behind. But that was about the last of the saavy roleplayer we saw for the night, and he was repalced by a 6'6" scrub. Blew an easy flip on the setup from Reke. Bricked a pair of FTs. Made a terrible play at a terrible moment with us down 13 at the 10minute mark of the 4th, when Hayes drove the baseline and with a quick pass found...the sideline ref We barely had anything you could call momentum anyway, and saying that play lost us the game would be ridiculous. But it did helpstop us in our trtacks adn get the crowd muttering again. Real problem is that its Chuck doing these things. A rookie...ok maybe. Chuck gets paid a lot of money though, and its not because he puts up the numbers to justify it. The very thing he's supposed to do is be smart. For what its worth, he seemed to at least stay between Gortat and the hoop in the approximately 5 minutes the two were matched. For waht its also worth, he grabbed a grand total of zero rebounds. Despite having seen him play for years I;m starting to forget what it looks like for him to be big on the glass.

Fredette ( D- ) -- hey guess what? A Kings bencher came into the game and struggled! Shocker, I know. Iin the game and had to guard Ghost of Redd, whihc at one point would have been utter disastr f course, but Redd can't even shoot anymore and it wasn't Jimmer's biggest problem tonight. That biggest problem would be a tie between couldn't shoot & not a good enough ballhandler. Maybe with a dose of poor decisionmaking for a topper. His best play of the night was grabbing a long rebound (I know, a rebound) and immediately pivoting to throw a long half court lead pass to a streaking Thornton. Was a good play. A saavy play. Of course a few moments earlier he had randomly decided to throw up a 30 footer early in the shot clock with no apparent provocation, so the good play was also a random occurrence. Kept getting stripped from behind as part fo the Suns scouting report clearly appeared to be "attack his dribble!". Did not make up for it by hitting any shots (as in any), and matters were only made worse when Smart twice made a point of subbing out Reke/IT and calling Jimmer the PG. Had particular problems with Ronnie Price, who used superior athleticimm and physicality to just swarm Jimmer and send him feeling out toward halfcourt looking for dribblign daylight. Played 14min, but it felt like too many and Smart hurt us by insisting on keeping him inin smallball sets rather than going with a more conventional lineup.

Louise Cliffe

Hickson ( C- ) -- in and started with a contested 18 foot jumper, which you can get anytime any possessioon for your bigs, you just don't want to. But was fortunate tonight in that his poor shot selection did not stand out from everybody else's. At least used his athleticism to bounce around on the boards a bit, but as he's obviously not the greatest bball thinker on teh team, he certianly wasn;t going to be the one to correctly diagnose the hey....they are all standing in the paint, maybe I should stand somewhere else dynamic of this one. Probably a littel better than JT in this one, for what that's worth.

Garcia ( C+ ) -- just briefly in for Salmons foul trouble in the first half, but brought in as a major part of our "strategy" in the second half, as he came in for JT as we went small to get some shooting in the third with the Suns packing the paint. Of course whether or not Cisco actually provides any shooting seems entirely a matter of chance anymore, as he he is erratic and unpredicatable, even for him, these days. Came in and was a disaster on offense turning it over, committing an offensive foul, missing his threes (which were the only shot he would take). But kept himself viable by battling on the other end of the court, where he was caught in a ridiculous Smart-created matchup having to try to guard 6'11" Channing Frye. Now Channing is one of the league's most pathetic wusses and generally wants no part of the paint where all those big mean scary hairy men hang out, but even he coudln't resistwhen the opposing coach stcuka skinny 6'7" SG on him. But Cisco at least battled, suing saavy and some quick hands knockign blls away to try to fend off the inevitable postups. After making a moderately inspiring series of hustle plays in the early 4th that somehow did not seem to inspire anyone, finally did the shooting thing, knocking down two threes in 3 minutes to keep us in vague contact with them. So seeing our last opportunity down 13 at about the 8 minute mark and with a little momentum off the Cisco threes, Smart then subbed in Reke for IT to see if a Cousins, Thornton, Cisco, Donte, Reke lineup could somehow get something ignited...oh wait. No that would have made sense. Sorry. In actuality seeing that we were down 13 and needing a spark Coach decided to insert...Jimmer. Who immediately got stripped and swarmed. Then he decided to insert Reke. But not for Jimmer. For Cisco so that we gained no size at all. Then he decided to ignore Donte until the 3 minute mark when it was too late. In other words Coach pissed me off.

No need to pick on specific players this game. Everyone not named Cousins, Thornton, or Greene absolutely sucked.

Reke did show up. He just didnt know what to do.

He's going to have to step it up. If he believes that he can run this team then he should. It's not very inspiring when our team is spread out ready to start the half court set, while Reke brings the ball up, dribbles, and simple passes it to someone else to make a move. It's games like these that will allow him to get to that next level. And by that i mean a regular, non-nationally televised, home court game.

There was a positive that i saw in the game even if it wasnt so noticeable. I actually wanted Jimmer to get more playing time. For the short period that he was in, the ball was moving, guys were moving around, and we knew what to expect, and therefore what to do. That'll lead to consistency, which is a step in the right direction. Whether or not we want Jimmer to be doing that i'm not sure.

I wouldn't give those three a free ride either. No movement worth a hoot, no passes worth a hoot, no shots worth a hoot. A very disappointing game. And it was the first game my daughter and grandson went in years, oh yes, and I went also. They looked dead, acted dead, and when their play turned out to be dead too, they became, if you can believe it, crestfallen. For our guys it was a contest to see who could hold their head the lowest. Of course, they had reason to be embarassed. Go Kings!!!! I hope they live to play another day.

Egad... it was like day and night from Thursday to Saturday. A forgettable game. Humm, maybe it was the Black Jerseys. You Think?

And this is what happens when the guy who's running the offense can't hit an open outside shot to save his life. I really don't know wtf Tyreke has been practising in the offseason. There's no point in having your form look better if you still can't hit open shots consistently.

Forget about form. Forget about 3 point shots. BBIQ is the KEY. Sadly, Reke lacks heavily in that department. What Westphal did was in Reke's favor - Westphal allowed his players to learn on their own, and learn from their mistakes. I really hope Reke is learning.

It's games like this that show why some people here have been focusing on Tyreke's inadaquacies for quite some time now.

Because the Kings simply cannot have the guy who controls the ball for the most clocktime not be a playmaker.

And unless Tyreke learns how to play against teams that stack the paint against him, the Kings will not be a winning team. It's as simple as that. And despite the excuses, despite the reality that he's young - he is not figuring it out, and this is his THIRD SEASON.

The list of things he needs to learn has been mentioned ad nauseum - to the best of my recollection, he hasn't learned one single skill since he's come into the league.

Seriously, is Tyreke ANY better at ANY part of the game of basketball now, than his 1st game of his rookie season?

I take it this means we can close the what the hell is wrong with Thorton thread and start a what the hell is wrong with Tyreke thread.

i was very interested in what cousins was gonna do tonight seeing how i know he was out club'n last night. my friend in sac saw and talked to him... i was expecting him to be off... not sure if any other players were with him... but sounds like they were all really off

Thornton is probably always going to be second fiddle to Reke. Hence why there are the questions about Reke... He's a big part of our franchise!

i tihnk the problem with our current form is that it isnt good enough to make the playoffs and it isnt bad enough to get a good draft pick...

Which is pretty much exactly where they were in 2007-2008. Only difference is now they're on an upward trajectory instead of a downward one, so I can live with that. They'll reach the playoffs eventually as long as they don't do anything stupid like blow up the team. Probably won't be this year, maybe not next year either but surely the year after that. I know that's longer than people want to wait but the important thing to remember is that once this group does become playoff caliber, they should be a playoff fixture for a long time because their core guys will still only 24-25 years old.

My grade is...I fell asleep at half time. OK, so it was mostly because i was super tired but the Kings didn't help. They gave me nothing to want to stay awake for! Was hoping they'd make another second half comeback but obviously that didn't happen. It sucks, they needed this win to creep a little closer to .500. I'm not going to get too upset though because this is the first bad loss they've had since the Nuggets debacle three weeks ago. What I'm watching for now i whether they can rebound from this loss and go be competitive on this road trip.

Yet, as bad as losing is, this game was a different kind of loss. The announcers were pointing out the whole game that as bad as the Kings were playing, they should have been down by 20+ the whole game, and yet, they had it close a few times but just couldn't get over the hump. My gut says the starters were just tired and couldn't maintain.

that was because the suns kept missing open shots

At least 80% of the reason for the loss was shooting. Not much they can do about that. (That's an off-season chore). It was weird to me that the players weren't taking wide open outside shots. It reminded me of NCAA playoffs in which players turn down open outside shots to drive closer to the basket and take shots that are heavily contested, all because of the pressure of the moment. But there was no pressure, and this was a home game. Very odd.

If we see three steps forward, two steps back, that will be ok with me. Expect the next opponents to pack the paint as much as Phoenix; the Kings are going to have to shoot the ball ok from the outside to win at a .500 clip.

Agree with this assessment, unfortunately. Giving Thornton a B- was also a gift. His 20 points were nice but he adds no BBIQ to the back court which, in my view, is the biggest failing they had in this basketball game and in too many others. Sometimes their play is so bad that I think it discourages Smart from calling plays or even thinking them up in the first place.

No, I don't think so. Sad to say. And adding Thornton doesn't help in ball handling or distribution. His scoring, and Tyreke's scoring are nice and a big plus but it's hard to offset the negative and often it doesn't.

And the reason it was shooting is because they just can't set up an open shot for anyone, and if they happened to, the guy might not take it. They are just unable to set each other up. When it happens sometimes it seems like it was by accident. At least part of it is BBIQ, however we might define that, and we have certainly tried here through many threads.

Our lack of impact role players reared its ugly head tonight. It's kind of sad how dependent we are on Reke/Thornton/Cousins to score the ball.
