I've been impressed by Cousins and his defense really. He's young, he's no shotblocker but he has pretty quick feet on D. Patterson and Scola really beat the Kings with spot shooting and hustle plays more than anything. It wasn't like Patterson just took it to Cousins one on one or anything. Getting out to shooters doesn't take anything super special other than knowledge and court awareness.

Yeah I looked at the shot chart. Patterson had all of 2 shots inside the circle all night. If we had a mobile PF defender to throw at him he probably would have been slowed down a bit. Oh wait we do but Donte only played 23 minutes, most of which not against Patterson. Instead we had Luis Scola and Patterson taking turns shooting over our midget PF and our slow full sized center who played a ridiculous 50 minutes tonight, including the entire 2nd half.

FOR 4-5 SECONDS. You act like he was dancing with Dragic for 20 seconds, because again you have a vested interst in making Hayes look good by any means. All that happened was Dragic didn't go straight to the hoop right off the switch. That's nice. That hardly settles the issue and Hayes was still at a major disadvantage. Any team in the league will take their PG against your PF iso'd for the game winning/tying shot. In fact the pick and switch gave the Rockets absolutely exactly the situation they wanted both times. And both times we paid.

And how in the heck would you derive that from my initial statement? If they wanted their PG stuck in the paint with no shot on a mismatch, well, that's an interesting situation to want to be in. To them I'd suggest the guillotine, they might like how it feels on their neck.

Tired of seeing guys just turn and shoot over Chuck. As for what Petrie thought would happen, I have no clue. He's good at times against certain opponents, but too often his size hurts us. Need JT to get back ASAP.

He "stopped him" for about 4 seconds after the pick and roll, with Cousins coming over to take away the drive left to boot. In most cases what people would call that is the PG squaring up the PF. Then the pain starts.

Dragic had already discontinued his dribble at that point. Best thing he could have done was drive left, would have been a turnover.

Whether it was intentional or not, Smart tested the conditioning of his troops and it failed. They lost because they had nothing left in useful energy in the 4th and after that. Most of out guys can't play that long and do it well. I think when the tire like that they do more and more stupid, one-on-one things and play everything including defense differently. Coach got succered in the first half because the bench played poorly and in the second, the game got closer and closer so no substitutions, just a bunch of worn out players too tired to think. Of course I might be wrong.

Why is Terrance Williams playing big minutes all of the sudden, I know he played well this game but..

He is on a ten day contract and we need to decide what to do with him in that period of time. That and the fact he has played well, yes.

Yes and no. An Ibaka type would certainly make a world of difference, but if Boogie wants to be an elite player, he has to be able to shut the average players down. His 38/14 night is freaking awesome, but it doesn't mean nearly as much when he gives up 24 to a scrub like Patterson. Boogie needs to learn to use his superb offensive footwork on the defensive end to get better positioning. He can very easily be a defender in the mold of LAL Shaq who knew how to use his huge body and long arms to be a defensive presence in the paint.

Last time I checked Dalembert and Camby are the rockets centers not Patterson. How did they do tonight? Yes Cuz was on Patterson at the end, but that was because he had already destroyed Dalembert and Camby. Cuz also looked pretty winded at the end too.

Donte +5, Chuck -12 pretty much sums it up. Both high and low for the team.

Can anyone explain to me why Whiteside can't get a minute in this game? No Hickson, no Thompson, the game goes to OT and Smart would rather ride Cousins for 50 minutes than go to Whiteside even once? Now the team has to fly home and play San Antonio in two days. Is Keith Smart the Dusty Baker of NBA coaches or what?

Hahaha, despite what you believe fact is fact, sorry your "hatred" (if I "love" Hayes) got in the way of reality there. Just pointing out a fact. Problem with that? Speak to truth about it.

Oh and BTW, the mistake was made when Cousins helped on Dragic when he had nowhere to go. Check the video.

Agree with the second statement. Cousins shouldn't have gone over to help. Dragic had already picked up his dribble in the middle of the paint with Hayes on him before Cousins came over to help completely.

My take on the game:

Glaring mistake #1: Final Possession of Regulation, DMC gets a smaller man (was it Lee?) on a switch and desperately calls for the ball, Thornton decides to ignore him inside and goes for the outside jumper.

#2: FAIL BENCH/ NO SUBS. I knew that there was no way our team was going to survive OT. No one got any extended period of rest whatsoever, the running slowed down and we failed to execute in a halfcourt set. Affected the guys on D as well, who kept letting their guy blow past them.

I personally feel Tyreke didn't have a very good defensive performance after the 1st quarter. Part of that is his man being 4" taller than him. But he kept getting blown by and instead of trying to recover reached for steals. I also don't like how he kept double-teaming cross court. He shouldn't have to come over from the left side of the court to double the guy posting on the right, because then there's no chance he can get back to close out when the ball is kicked out to the open shooter. Just felt that we needed more from Tyreke on both ends of the court to win this one, what with the bench being absolutely invisible and IT/MT not doing much either.

Watched it twice, your dead wrong! Cousins did what he was susposed to do, stop the ball. Which I might add, he had to do twice.

I don't know if it failed necessarily, I guess the end result speaks for itself, however you are correct. There was a noticeable point towards the end of regulation where Cousins was struggling to find that 6th wind.

Watch it again. He discontinued his dribble. Cousins came over after the fact. It was pretty quick but Dragic was facing away from the hoop, he was going nowhere. I really don't even think it was that bad of a play on the part of Cousins, Patterson happened to be in the right place at the right time and him making a near 3 point shot in a clutch way couldn't have been totally expected. The issue is if you want to point out a mistake, point out the right mistake.

Like i said in the other thread wasn't able to watch the second half, but first half our bench was rank bad, Salmons took the night off.... then he really took the night off.

I see a tiff between cuz and Thornton brewing. There have been moments of barking at each other on the court. Actually saw Thornton say fu to cuz. Also have seen tyreke tell cuz to shut up and just play the damn game to which cuz replied fu to tyreke.

Two things. The bench was in the game for three minutes. Three. On a mass substitution where the tallest guy on the floor was Travis Outlaw. So you have a crappy lineup on the floor coming into the game cold as a unit and, shockingly, they played poorly.

The bad play of the bench in that three minute stint is entirely on coach.

And that leads to starters playing 50 minutes and not having enough in the tank to finish off the Rockets down the stretch. How many losses this year can we chalk up to poor substitutions? Because that extension of Smart's contract is looking pretty poor.

This thread has a good dicsussion of the nuts and bolts of what happened last night. Looking at the last three close losses, I believe there is a mental problem at play here. The Kings just don't believe deep down inside that they deserve to win. They play not to lose. Their mental outlook needs work.

JReynolds mentioned that Dragic is one of the fastest players in the league. Not to mention Boykins. IT is not used to guys as fast as he is. Cousins has a long way to go on defense, but has the physical skills. You could see last night that fatigue played a factor at the end. The Kings lost all 3 of the last games due to mental mistakes.

Poll: IT and MT played 95 minutes and shot 12-35, who should have got some of those mins?

There wasn't a choice for my answer. "Anybody" is my answer. Our guys just played too many minutes to be at their best at the end. The fourth quarter dead heads. I'm sure Smart learned a lesson last night. We'll see.

So we have a chance to win the game in regulation and we decide to throw it into MT (who is having an off night). MT procedes to dribble around, no passes are made, and then chucks up a 3 pointer, while the guy having a career night gets no look.

Is this the best we can do in a game winning situation?

While MTs selfishness is well recorded, I think even Cousins shows that streak frequently. Might just be a case of learning and growing up, but have often felt that he doesn't pass out of the post. I've seen him go up against double teams (and score), while some guard on the perimeter is open, hoping to get the ball for an open 3.

In general, I like this aggression, and feel it is a necessary part of his game. Sometimes however, he needs to pass out (and repost, if necessary). Open 3 point looks shall open the middle for him more; more single team coverage shall make his life easy; and if the guards know that they are more likely to get the ball back for open shots, they are more likely to feed him too.

"Think" is the operative word. If they weren't tired and could think, they would pass it out or whatever. But when that tired most folks revert to instinct and in their case it's one-on-one. Coach and player should know how tired they are and do something about it. Not last night. But it must be said that these guys have not been played this long in a four quarter game as a group. Everybody was tired and on pooped instinct.

I also rewatched it. I have to agree here. In this instance Chuck had him stopped with no dribble before Cuz came over.

I'd like to see those particular instances IN CONTEXT before I tried to read too much into them. Can you cite the games where that occurred?
