Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Apparently Grant must be stealing my stuff, as I had already planned for tonight's theme: Great Kings Sex Symbols Over the Years

Artest ( A- ) -- and yet another big game from the guy who has been the difference maker in the early season. Big start with a couple of steals/breakaway dunks and a block on Yao, but missing his jumpers. Very very active, but one of those about the Ron Ron starts where you actually had to hope he would back off at some point. Came back in in the second and immediately sparked us on a 9-0 that saw us take the lead. Continued to make our sad bigs better by hitting them on cuts to the hoop -- the only one of our perimeter players with the ability to consistently keep his head up and make those quick passes in there. Per usual, had the other team scrambling to find a defensive matchup for him, with Hayes (strong enough, but not quick/clever enough), Bonzi (kind of a poor man's Ron and somewhat effective late), Battier (mostly concerned with Kevin and his own sucking), and TMac (not a great defender) all taking turns. Did lose control of TMac on defense in the late third and fourth, but that's going to happen sometimes with one of the truly great scorers. When TMac gets hot, he's a Hall of Famer and better than any defender you throw at him. Ron did back off the ball domination late, but began to force a little in the 4th against Bonzi with the two brahma bulls banging around inside. For the first 2/3 of this game Ron was bordering on A+ type of dominance, but got quiet latre wiht Bonzi on him at the same time that TMac starting scorching us on the other end, and so gets ticked down.
peja073.jpg

Peja sans shirt -- let's lead off with the granddaddy of all Kings beefcake pictures. Here ya go once again ladies. You can thank me later.

Moore ( D ) -- back to the Mikki we know and, um, love. Spent a lot of the early game "guarding" Yao, and...er... Did better in the second quarter, although by that time he was getting a lot of help. And combined with his invisibility on the glass and inability to hit a jumper, did nto last long in the second half. We got good minutes out of Hawes and were able to smallball at PF where the Rockets really aren't big at all once you get past Yao.
vlade.bmp

Vlade in a Speedo -- and damn near as sexy as Peja -- note the tall guy in the backrow. Now picture a cigarette hanging out of the corner of his mouth. There ya go. Brilliantly staged picture too -- what are the odds of Vlade finding eight guys where he may actually have the best body?

Miller ( C ) -- in the early going dominated insided by Yao, and was often being guarded by a SF at the other end, which of course completely neuitralized him. Came back in in the second quarter along with Ron and was part of our 9-0 run to get back into it. But then suffered one of his classic Brad meltdowns at the end of the second quarter -- it is perfectly clear at this point that no, he really won't ever learn. Fouled Yao. Complained, got a T, kept on whining until Reggie had to pull him so that the fool wouldn't get himself tossed. And all of this with 45 seconds to go until the half. You couldn't hold your water for 45 seconds? Most toddlers can do that. In any case returned for an unremarkable second half. Unremarkable perhaps except for the fact that he actully lost some of him minutes to Hawes, who finally gave us that big man game we have been looking for. Overall stats were not bad -- an average 12pt 7reb type outing...unfortunately while his counterpart went 29 and 11. Remember a few years ago when there were debates on this board about who had the better center?
oilemup.jpg

Reggie -- and damn if we aren't a unique franchise. Let's ignore for a moment that we have never even had a winning season with any coach but the guy who just passed through town today -- how many teams can claim the honor of having an oiled up beefcake picture of its coach? Woohoo! See, now if Muss had done one of these, he might still be here.

Martin ( B ) -- invisible start, not getting the ball, and being guarded attentively. Got a continuation in the late second, but missed a wide open corner three at the first half buzzer that would have put us up going into half. But rebounded in the third -- and once again, that is his quarter. Had 5pts at half, but added 14 in the third quarter on a variety of open jumpers and open court finishes. Cooled a bit as Battier took up the duties again, including a couple of blocks at the rim on Kevin's drives, but the coaching staff may have played the biggest cooler in this one. Kevin ended up sitting for a long stretch rihgt through the heart of the 4th -- the time in fact hat we built and maintained a 6-10pt lead that the rockets could never overcome. Finally came back in with about 4 minutes left after I was worried there for a while he was going to be forgotten about for the whole quarter. Came back to get blocked on a drive by Battier, and get the lumber laid on him by Bonzi on the drive., Missed one of the two there, but the game was largely out of reach by that point. Another 40% shooting effort, but after the bad first half, he had a good second half that gave Ron the support guy he needed. Mostly just scoring, but another 25+ effort and as usual happened pretty quickly. Never a matchup of McGrady and Kevin, as Battier took Kevin and Ron took TMac, so you can't really compare their stats. It should be noted that the various players kevin did guard did little. it should also be noted that that had very little to do with Kevin, and much to do with the Rocket's season long search for somebody, anybody, to step up as a third gun.
KevReg250x333-1.jpg

Kevin -- but of course the problem with the above is that then your current golden boy decides he wants to compete, and, well, this is what you get...

Beno ( B ) -- was scoring early and continues to show a real knack for finishing around the rim. Wasn't getting any assists again, but was solid, which is more than can be said for any of the Rockets PGs. Played very solidly again in the second half, gave a little help ont he glass, and was very efficient coming off the gunning 7-19 performance last time out. Only took good shots (well, a couple of the inside things were circus forces, but they were clkse in, and went in this time so...) and we largely won this one by simply not turning the ball over. Only 5 TOs on the night, and while Beno led us with 2, that's solid for a PG. Was also the player who finally made the saavy play charging in to draw the 6th foul on Yao (may or may not have been a foul, but that's not the point).
udrih_beno.jpg

Beno -- and of course for Beno, a picture of himself. Ok, all at once ladies, "awwwwww" ain't that a cute smile?

Salmons ( B ) -- came in, helped Ron break up a 4-2 by the Rockets, then came down the other way and hit a circus layup. Good strong stretch in the early second carrying us while Ron was out. In fact think he scored or passed for all of our points while the starters were out. Was quieter, but played effectively in the second half, and his quick first step continues to cause basically everybody a problem. Took some turns trying to guard TMac, but that was just a slaughter this time out. Another one of the efficient Kings tonight -- shot 5-7, had zero turnovers, and was the type of 6th man you need this time out.

The Sex Symbol -- John "Sexy" Salmons prepares to....blow up like a puffer fish.

Hawes ( A- ) -- Best game of the season so far as far as impersonating a big man. Immediately inserted when Yao went out in the first, didn't do much the remainder of the quarter, and got checked off the glass by Bonzi in there. But did some good work on the glass inside in the early 2nd before being pulled again as soon as Yao returned. Returned late and made a defensive stand in there against Bonzi -- in fact finished the first half with an encouraging 5rebs 2blks and was helping in his stints. Kept on rebounding and did a good job of fronting Yao in the 4th, eliminating the whole getting overwhelmed but by tryign to keep the big guy from even catching the ball. Struggled again with his offense inside (1-6 FG), and the lack of strength is an obvious issue right now. With the boardwork was in there battling, but every little bump seems to throw him off and cause fumbles. Still, at least he was down in there and only took one jumper (made a difference that Scola is a big who is very used to guarding perimeter 7 footers from his European days, and defends the perimeter well). And offensive sturggles or no, I consider this by far the most encouraging game we've seen out of Spenser. Played like a big, did the things which don't come natural for him, and led us in rebounding with 10 in only 14 minutes of action.
Ostertag_gay.jpg

Tag -- and for Spenser's effort tongiht, who better to go back to than our last great rebounding/shotblocking center/sex symbol? Now that guy was ALL man baby.

Cisco ( C+ ) -- unremarkable first half stint. Did try to bring some energy, but no impact. Did not score, and on his best chance decided to throw himself into Yao's body looking for the foul rather than just try to finish. Came up with some good plays in the early 4th against sketchy at best defense from Mike James, and helped us push the lead open. Started to get shaky onthe decisonmaking again though as the quarter went along, and I breathed a sigh of relief when we got him out of there and reinserted Kevin with about 4 minutes to go before naything bad happened.

Hedo as a blond -- who can forget this drop dead gorgeous proof that blondes have more fun?

Douby ( C ) -- got a longer run than normal in the late first/early second, didn't look terrible excpet for again displaying some truly remarkable tunnel vision. He gets down, looking to score, and the rest of the world simply melts away for him. Admirable focus...unless you are a teammate popping open on the wing for instance.
headshotnewest.jpg

Angela Tsai -- heh, as Ms. Tsai DID grace us with her presence on the board, could not resist. And Angela -- ballsy move showing up to chat. Or at least post a defense. Much respect from this quarter at least. Nice headshot too. You can learn more about Ms. Tsai at: http://angelatsai.com

Reggie ( ) -- well, we stopped neither Yao nor TMac, but we won the game anyway. And that really has been the story of the early season for the Rockets. The two stars are playing like stars, but they can't find a third gun to help them out. Two stars, no other double figure scorers. Battier, Alston, Bonzi, James...all shooting under 40%. Hayes = punchless. Scola, still learning the league. Now on paper at least we looked like a team that might be able to somewhat slow their stars -- had a potential TMac stopper in Ron, and then could double Yao, and force the other guys to beat us. Not the way it worked out, but we won anyway with the Rockets "supporting cast" throwing up their normal array of bricks and turnovers. And that last was really the key to the game. We got our normal pathetic number of asssits, got outrebounded, shot less than 45%, had a guy drop 40 on us...but the big key to this game was the abrupt reversal in how well we took care of the ball. From 19 turnovers the other night, to only 5 for the entire game tonight. That's how you score 107 on a night when you neither shoot well nor rebound well, and when the other team really isn't turning it over much themselves. As for Reggie himself in his first game against the shadow that looms over all subsequent Kings coaches -- did fine. The early scheme to stop Yao obviously wasn't worth a damn, as he just chewed us up in the early going with something like 15pts 4rebs in the first alone. In fact without Ron hyped up on magic Ron juice we could have gotten ourselves into early trouble there. But we made adjustments and started bringing doubles after that intial burst to make it hard on the big guy to actually go ahead and drop 50 on us, and with the exception of Bonzi banging around inside, absolutely no Rocket who was going to step up and take advantage fo the opportunities thus presented. Our rotation is still set, but this time out there was a welcome development as Mikki struggled, but Spenser stepped into finally give us a big man game inside. Not many minutes still, but more, and had a role. Kevin looked lost in the first half -- maybe some of his own doing, some of the Rockets, and some of the Ron Ron focus. I'm not actually sure there were any obvious adjustments made after half to get him going -- its just his thing. The third quarter is always there for him, no matter how sucky the rest of the game goes. Do have to question Reggie a bit for icing him in the 4th, but as we hung on to win this one, not a huge issue. And about that hanging on bit...we were far from awesome down the stretch here, and needed some help from the incompetent Rockets crappers like Rafer, but it was better. What I'm sure was a colorful speech from Reggie about taking the ball to the rack seemed to pay some dividends this time out. I'm sure there was some interesting language about turnovers too, but when you go out and have 5, that's hard to attribute to much of anything other than just having a great game in that aspect. That will quite likely be the best we do in that stat all season.
Sergei Monia -- and here I must ask for some help. There was an absolutely beautiful beefcake picture of Sergei posted here from back in his brief stay with the Kings in the second half of 05-06. Like Peja's shirtless, but even better with a whoie skull motif and his hand creeping ever so sexily toward his waistband. Anyway, the originally linked picture is gone (i.e. was pulled from whatever site it used to be on), and I could not locate another version out in cyberspace. Anybody happen to have a copy of that beauty? Be a VERY worthy addition here.

is that pollard w/ hedo??

I think so, but I wasn't sure and saved the picture off years ago under Hedo's name alone, so didn't want to say it was and be wrong. Would be a classic Scot stunt though, to cheese himself out and imitate Hedo's look.

the one by hido's side should be Huseyin Besok, once a member of turkish national team. i remember they painted their head blond for something but i am too old to remember all details.
