Don't Make Me Use The Bat
I am Keith Smart.

Tyreke Evans 22pts 29min
Marcus Thornton 21pts 22min

vs.

John Salmons 0pts 39min
Isaiah Thomas 12pts (3-16FG) 36min

I am Keith Smart. I am not bright.

Fortunately DeMarcus Cousins fouled out at the end to avoid adding another name to this list. And sitting around waiting for Jason Thompson to reenter the game while our Houston trade pieces put on an awful display in front of their old teammates got old too.

Stats: 39min 0pts (0-4, 0-2, 0-0) 1reb 5ast 1stl 0blk 0TO
Salmons ( D ) -- John managed Zero points on 0 for 4 shooting. He did spend most of the game chasing James Harden around the court, but you'd think that in 39 minutes of playing time, he would accidently score a couple of baskets. However, his time is apparently more highly valued than either Cousins or Tyreke's, since both of them sat on the bench in one extended period for 13 minutes and 43 seconds for Tyreke, and 14 minutes and 37 seconds for Cousins. Thats about it for John. My notes add up to about 4 lines on my note pad, simply because there was nothing to say. He did make life a little more difficult for Harden, but thats about it. Otherwise, he was simply invisible. And that folks is how you earn 39 minutes of playing time according to the brilliant coach, Keith Smart. --Baja

Stats: 32min 17pts (6-12, 0-0, 5-6) 15reb 1ast 1stl 2blk 0TO
Thompson ( A ) -- JT was one of our best players on the floor tonight, if not the best. The box score says it all: 17 points, 15 rebounds, 2 blocks. He was mixing up playing inside and outside, with 8 points on jumpers and 9 points in the lane and on free throws, and he was just pulling down boards all night long. Defensively he did a fantastic job, especially in the first when his rotations were rock-solid, cutting off drive after drive and always being in the right position. He ended up allowing 13 points on 12 shots, but at least six of those points came on good offensive plays where he forced a difficult shot - a couple of post plays and a drive by Harden that JT challenged very nicely. I thought that JT should have been back on the floor much earlier in the fourth quarter, but he turned out to not be a big difference maker once he did get back in at the 5-minute mark, largely because we weren't really going for post offense at that point. Still, a very good night and I don't think we can ask for much more on either end of the floor. --Capt.

Stats: 27min 20pts (7-13, 0-0, 6-9) 6reb 2ast 2stl 0blk 2TO
Cousins ( B- ) -- looked lively and strong early, but the jumper was off and a little forced, and he was missing little gimmes around the hoop and you had to worry about his normal frustration response. Overwhelmed the Rockets midget backups once they took Asik out, but it still wasn't 100% comfortable, and he closed the quarter with a pair of ugly FT misses. When he and Asik both returned his game picked up, and he just drove right at Asik repeatedly as he asserted himself. Halftime was an unfortunate turning point though, as he, and we, quickly picked up a bunch of fouls in the early 3rd, and then Smart mysteriously benched Cuz for over 12 minutes. I have no idea why. But he disappeared, and while he had a strong take through Asik after he returned, he was not a huge factor down the stretch, and fouled out with 2min to go on a sincerely stupid play fouling a guy from behind on the break for the 3pt play, and disqualification. This game felt like it had potential. He had energy, but not focus. And then as is so often the case it felt like his coach was a 6th opponent out there, and end result was an ok and a bit more game, but not what it should have been. We face these guys twice more in the final days of the season, be interesting to see how that goes.

Stats: 29min 22pts (7-18, 2-5, 6-8) 4reb 0ast 4stl 0blk 1TO
Evans ( B ) -- It was sort of an up and down game for Tyreke. Not much happened in the 1st quarter except for him getting 2 early fouls, which sent him to the bench with 5:32 left in the quarter. He then sat on the bench for 13 minutes and 43 seconds. Not quite sure I understand why one of our best players with only 2 fouls was held out of the game that long. He was re-inserted with 3:45 left in the 1st half. He almost immediately stole the ball, (he had 5 steals on the night) got it to Cuz, who hit him cutting to the basket but had his shot blocked. He followed with a beautiful pass to JT under the basket for a score. He closed out the half by hitting a runner with 1 tick left on the shotclock. His 2nd half was far more productive. After fouling Harden to start the 2nd, he once again hit a 16 footer with the shotclock running out. He then drove to the basket and missed. He followed with a three from the left wing. He was 2 for 5 from beyond the arc tonight. In one nice sequence, Tyreke tried a reverse layup but missed. Aldrich rebounded and kicked the ball right back to Tyreke who dunked. He also had a very nice move with a crossover at the top of the foul line, blew past two defenders and laid it in. Tyreke's biggest problem in the second half was his assignment of guarding Parsons, who is a good 3 to 4 inches taller, and just as quick. I would call his job decent at best, but considering the task, he never should have been guarding Parsons. The alternative of course was to guard Harden, who gave Salmons fits all night. All in all, a pretty good night for Tyreke who only played 29 minutes to Salmons, who did nothing, 39 minutes. I have no explaination! --Baja

Stats: 35min 20pts (3-16, 1-7, 5-5) 0reb 5ast 1stl 1blk 2TO
Thomas ( F ) -- Some nights make a grader ask the question, "Where is the line between a D- and an F?" Isaiah was trying out for the Monty Python firing squad tonight, going three of 16, and while he scored a respectable 12 points due to 5 free throws, 3 of those were an absolute gift on a play where IT was trying out for the rhythmic gymnastics team instead of playing basketball. He came around a screen, jumped up in the air doing a full cheerleader-splits while shooting so that he could bring his leg around and tap Lin, who was two feet to the side of him. That's a tough maneuver, of course, so he missed about four feet wide right. I guess the officials figured that if you're going to douse your dignity in gasoline and light it on fire like a pansy, you at least deserve the pity call. You know what? I think I found the line between the D- and the F, and IT crossed it on that play. It's too bad, as he did a passable job of distributing the ball (5 assists, and I counted 8 other good setups) and had decent results on defense. He allowed 7 points on 9 shots, though Lin was beating him most of the night and getting the assist (10) instead of the shot. He did manage a few nice defensive possessions, with the familiar "great D on a switch in the post", this time on Harden. Maybe he should just play PF on defense? Still, not a solid defensive night overall, and the offense was downright ugly. --Capt.

Thornton ( B ) -- after a couple of quiet m minutes after Reke left, came to life and was aggressive, albeit mostly just as a scorer. Did have once nice dump in pass on the break. Was out in the open court himself, and in one of those modes where he was attacking so fast that it looked out of control, and yet somehow they were falling. Threw up a terrible one on one three point brick in the mid 2nd. but piled up the points anyway. Didn't get back in until the start of the 4th due to Reke's excellence and the pictures of Smart with those farm animals that Salmons and IT appear to have, and was modestly effective as a scorer again until Smart finally decided he had better get Reke back into the game before it was completely over, and so of course swapped out his second best little player to make it happen. Odd considering that IT and Salmons couldn't have hit the ocean with an anchor tonight. But that's why they named him Smart. --Brick

Stats: 13min 0pts (0-3, 0-1, 0-0) 2reb 3ast 1stl 0blk 2TO
Douglas ( D ) -- Douglas only played 12 minutes tonight, which I'll often decline to give a letter grade, but it was pretty clear that he wasn't on. The box score says three assists and two turnovers, but I'll disagree on both: he had only two real assists and some serious home cooking on the third (I'm not even sure which three-dribble possession it was) and he had three turnovers (why they didn't count the pass that went through his hands I have no idea). He scored zero points, and his defense was good, but not good enough and not important enough to lift him beyond the D. --Capt.

Stats: 16min 2pts (1-4, 0-0, 0-0) 3reb 1ast 0stl 0blk 1TO
Patterson ( C- ) -- Patrick only played 16 minutes in this one, mostly because JT was having a very good game, and amazingly, Smart actually noticed and rode the JT horse for extended minutes. Why Smart decided to put Hayes in instead of Patterson in the second half, but one could surmise that P Pat could have had an additional 9 minutes of playing time. He only scored 2 pts on 1 of 4 shooting. He started the game by missing a point blank shot, got his own rebound, and missed again. He followed by hitting a 16 footer. His best play of the night was when IT drove into a crowd, lost the ball on the floor, which Patterson picked up, ball faked a shot, and passed it to a wide open JT under the basket. He only took one shot in the second half, an 18 foot jumper, which he missed. Shortly thereafter, he was replaced by Chuck Hayes. --Baja

Stats: 6min 6pts (2-3, 0-0, 2-2) 1reb 0ast 0stl 0blk 0TO
Outlaw ( INC ) -- was tempted to give him a grade despite the only 6 minutes, as it was one of those once a month outings where Travis abruptly puts up random numbers, outside of the offense, and everybody else just kind of sits back with some popcorn watching and nodding until its over. But hey, went toward the hoop on a few of them, and hot what he took, so there's my praise. Also tried to play some aggressive defense on Harden until the bearded flopper suckered him into a foul. --Brick

Stats: 12min 0pts (0-1, 0-0, 0-0) 6reb 0ast 0stl 1blk 1TO
Aldrich ( D ) -- well now you can see why Houston didn't want to play him much -- apparently Omar Asik owns him and was probably embarrassing him in practice every day. Some rebounds in the statline, most of them at the very end of the game, but generally Cole did not get it done out there this time. Did get one smush defending the rim, but was repeatedly outmaneuvered by Asik inside, and taken advantage of by Montiejunas on a long jumper. Got minutes instead of Cousins because Smart is an idiot and likes to make his guys feel nice by letting them play against their former teams, in their former hometowns, and any other time he can touchy feely them into some minutes. But did not earn them this time and finally gave way to Hayes later in the game. --Brick

Stats: 9min 2pts (0-0, 0-0, 2-2) 1reb 1ast 0stl 0blk 1TO
Hayes ( INC ) -- Hayes only played 9 minutes. During which time he made no mistakes, but scored no points and basicly just managed to fill 9 minutes with nothing noticable happening. Not enough time to judge. --Baja

Stats: DNC-CD
Smart ( A ) -- Well, not for his coaching, but for the completely Dada response to a post-game presser question: "I don't know why a brown cow eating green grass gives white milk." I'll tell you, after a long, long year of watching the post-game press conferences, that line at least made tonight's worth it. --Capt.
Smart ( F ) -- Why any coach would leave his two best players on the bench for such a long period of time while others, like Salmons accomplised nothing is beyond me. Cousins had 3 fouls, which is usually the bench mark for on half of play, or as the brilliant Bill Walton points out, that if you don't have 4 fouls on you going into the 4th quarter, you shouldn't be out there. Evans sat for almost 14 minutes with just 2 fouls. --Baja

Stats: DNW-7yrs
Kings Organization ( F ) -- Stupid comment of the night came from Jerry Reynolds when he was praising Chandler Parsons, and said that a lot of teams blew it when they passed on Parsons in the 1st round of the draft. Apparently he forgot that the Kings passed on Parsons in the second round of the draft and chose Tyler Honeycutt instead. Anyone that saw both players play in college, would have taken Parsons. Baja
Kings Organization ( G )Note: that did not even make my Top 3 Jerry Reynolds stupid comments of the night. :p My personal fave was him announcing that you could not win without a 3pt shooting PF...except of course unless you are most of the teams actually winning. A failed coach and failed GM advocating a failed philosophy that I hope will be fully washed away in a few weeks. If he gets to stay as an announcer to misinform yet another generation of would be Kings fans I resent that but will give it to him for his happy go lucky schtick. But I want him nowhere near the basketball decisions.--Brick

these two received the most minutes tonight, to absolutely ill effect:

john salmons - 39 mins, 0-4, 0 pts, 1 reb, 5 asts
isaiah thomas - 35 mins, 3-16, 12 pts, 0 rebs, 5 asts

these two were jerked around yet again by their head coach, and it is reflected in their inconsistency. moments of brilliance mixed with frustration due in part to their sporadic usage:

demarcus cousins - 27 mins, 7-13, 20 pts, 6 rebs, 2 asts, 6 pfs
tyreke evans - 29 mins, 7-18, 4 rebs, 0 asts

keith smart doesn't even get a head shake from me tonight. all i have for him is a kobe bryant-styled death stare...

"We played, but we didn't play" - Coach Smart. I guess he does understand, when we had our best players in we PLAYED but then we took them out and didn't play.

Ive said a lot of bad things about mr. Smart this year, but tonight he blew my expectations away. Without a doubt the worst coached game ive EVER seen

This team isn't going to win with Isaiah playing like he did tonight. PERIOD. You can give it to Tyreke and Cousins all you want and this team is going to do squat without IT on his game. If you want to look for answers for this game and the last game that they lost, you can look to the fourth quarter of the Lakers' game in which Smart dumb*ss keeps him out the entire 4th quarter. Beautiful. The guy who arguably is playing better than any Kings player since the All-Star break and you keep him out the entire 4th quarter. Why? Because he gave up 9 points in the game on D? LOL. Or maybe it's just because you got bored and decided to move that piece on the chessboard for fun and giggles; you know, it was a matchup thing. Who the hell knows. IT certainly didn't. IT was going through the motions tonight. He was simply doing some things the coach wanted him to do. That was it. No fun. No heart. Just "playing but not playing" as Smart put it about his team's performance. Way to go Smart. This is CLASSIC Smart. He talks about team ball and unselfishness, but what does Smart do repeatedly at the end of virtually every game? He talks about: "I did ...I did...I did....I did....." I've never in my life heard a coach talk about himself and his coaching decisions so much as Smart. The players are secondary; it's all about his magnificent strategy and his matchups...Thank God there is going to be an ownership change and we won't have to watch this master chess player at work anymore.

Keith Smart lost us that game. Period. I was there. TD sucked, Smart kept him in. John Salmons blew, Smart kept him in. Tyreke was amazing. He kept him out.

uhm... no. just no.

the problem tonight, as always, was defense. and IT is quite often a part of that problem, though also quite often through no fault of his own. he is limited by his size. it's why 5'9" guards are relegated to journeymen roles in the contemporary nba...

Cisco stopped by the Kings locker room w/ a joke. Asked Cousins if he wanted to come watch him in the playoffs :-)
lol Cisco

But seriously how many times must John Salmons fail totally? I rather just play completely undersized with Evans/Thornton than have Salmons in there.

Bro, Isaiah Thomas will be lucky to even get 20 mins a game on a winning team. Let's not over exaggerate how important he is to the fortunes of this team. He's got Nate Robinson written all over him.

MAybe if Keith Smart played IT more, he would have been the next John Stockton. Would have been better than seeing that heartless waste of space Tyreek Evans fail at even warming the bench.

The problem is the team and the roster. Not coach Smart, who would most likely be a 50 win coach on any other team than this one.

I didn't get to see the game but it sounds like it was more of the same.

What a shame.
Actually it wasnt the same. Worse then ever when it comes to the coaching sabatoge. Tyreke picked up a 2nd foul with over 5 mins left in the first. Smart pulled him out till the 3 minute mark of the second.... then tyreke scores 16 in the 3rd quarter, gets benched for most of the 4th.

Cousins picked up a 3rd foul (yes only 3) with 10 mins left in the 3rd, he was promplty benched until the 8 min mark of the 4th

i don't know but when i saw the rockets putting their starters in during the second quarter, i expected smart to do the same...but he didn't....for a long long time

lol you are kidding me right? keith smart is the worst coach I've ever seen. If he was coaching the heat he would bench lebron for a whole quarter. The guy is clueless when it comes to coaching. Any other coach in the league would have this team in the playoffs. This is a playoff caliber roster. If we add a great coach, get a huge upgrade at SF, and let our young guys take the next step I could see this team making a OKC like leap. The main problem is on defense and that can be fixed easily with a great defensive minded coach.

Not that it made a difference, but did anyone else noticed that Cousins shouldn't have fouled out? I only counted 5 fouls. So, I went and checked, and the official scorer must have screwed up. They gave a foul that should have been on John Salmons reaching in on Jeremy Lin to Cousins. Probably a 5 vs. 15 mistake.

EHMAGAWDZ! Oh and finally you understand what people were saying about him screwing around with Tyreke's development and minutes. Only with Tyreke you said he should suck it up.

And Tyreke's development is slightly more important.

The Maloofs Rachel Phelps'd us pretty good with the hiring of Smart.

these polls aren't getting any easier. deciding upon what I was least angry about was hard enough, but most? settled on Reke being held back, but really, the most infuriating thing about this game was that, bad as it was, it was not Smart's worst performance as a coach.

I don't know why you guys still get worked up over Smart. We're T-minus.. 10 games left of the Smart era before a new era of Kings basketball.

that's a long 10 games, friend, particularly considering that there is still a chance--however much kevin johnson has managed to shrink it--that the kings may be seattle-bound this offseason. imagine the sting if they do move to seattle, bring in new management and coaching, commit to building around demarcus cousins and tyreke evans, and start winning, just as we've all hoped they might under improved circumstances. sonics fans get to wallow in that feeling every day while kevin durant, russell westbrook, and the oklahoma city thunder tear through the tough, grisly fat of the western conference. it could be our wallowing next season, and to have to put up with keith smart's bull**** in what might be the team's final 10 games as the sacramento kings? it's a salt-in-the-wound kind of indignity that's worth getting worked up over. let's just hope that the nba rules in sacramento's favor, the team remains where it is under new ownership, and we're rid of keith smart for good. but i do get justifiably angry when, even in the season's final days, i have to bear witness to that bad joke of a head coach jerking around a team with a couple of special talents that could be thriving under more competent leadership...
