Grades v. Rockets 01/28

This team just needs some healthy time together and I think we can definately be the best in the league. They actually televised the game here and I thought the team was moving really well throughout and passing well too. I think our team defense has improved as well with Cat in the line up, although we did allow 111pts (22pts were Padgett). We just need some time and healthy bodies to get to the next level and take it up a few notches.

Team grade: A-.

Only 9 turnovers. Good defense with just a few lapses. Can't fault Barnes or Martin for not being able to keep Padgett contained.

Another night of good team play, made all the sweeter because it was done on the second game of a back-to-back in Texas. ;)

Great game by most tonight, you gotta love House's shooting, probably will keep him around a little longer :) I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Brad Miller is now 41-57 in his last five games! He is listed as #5 in FG% at NBA.COM before tonights game's stats. Unbelievable! Love to see his confidence taking those shots, he's been extremely effective in scoring, guess I have to get over it that it's not in the paint.

We have some momentum building again with tonights game and, dare I say, even the loss to S.A. in that we are playing much better defense...a trend not to be taken lightly. It will keep us in good stead if we can continue and improve (think that's the only way to improve, is to continue, hehehe).

Now, if we can just capture those damn Wolves!

Yay for Brad!!! :) I didn't know that stat. Thanks albeitrue.

Most of Brad's shots are jump shots. And he making them just like how he's suppose too. Thanks for shooting Brad when you're open and Keep it up!

I thought all the Starters played great!! Barnes had a good game subbing in for Pedja. He was really hustling, trying his best and that's what I love.

Bibby = Love this guy. Clutch shot in OT. Also clutch FTs. 14 assists. Amazing! No one could stop Bibby tonight.

Cat = Good game. 2 big 3s in OT. Glad to see him beat his former team and be happy. :)

Webb = VERY CLUTCH. If it wasn't for Webb's 3, we would have lost. Also another key play by Webb: listening to the Rockets' play in huddle then letting his teammates know the play. :D

Team gets a big ol' A+ from me.... for making me laugh so much:

Brad's face during the now infamous free throw noise.

Webb listening in on the huddle.

Mike and Webb talking before the three -- Mike may be known as the "quiet one" but, damn, that boy got a big mouth.

Brad pulling the chair out from under Yao.

Scramble play late in the game -- Brad's in the middle of the floor looking straight up into the rafters for the ball (duh, where'd it go?) and Mike comes from behind dribbling up the court.

That was classic, it was clear they were scheming. I thought Bibby would get the ball back from Web when he brought it in, then the fake hand-off...brilliant!

Totally! Chris and Mike talk to each other a lot on the court but they were way exaggerated just before the play. I knew they were up to something... they won't win any Oscars, but the Rockets bought it!
~~

Good game overall. I just knew the Kings would be able to pull this one out; I had faith.

I guess I wasn't the only one who thought Webb and Bibby were up to something. When I saw that little head push, I knew something was up. Webb has been taking a lot of the big shots this year and I figured he was looking to take the shot if it was there. Reynolds said that the play was for Bibby but Webb shot it because he couldn't get the ball to Bibby. I think the plan was always for Webb to take the shot and Bibby was just the decoy. The spin was just too smooth to be an on-the-fly play.

On Barnes, I think he did pretty well out there defending McGrady. My only complaint is that he needs to fight through those picks better. Some shots were too wide open. But for the most part, I think he and his teammates contained McGrady. He put up a lot of points but he was quiet for the most part. He had some buckets down the stretch in regulation, but he shot only 11 for 30 and took seven shots from the line. Not too bad, IMO. His assists were what hurt us.

As far as Padgett, before he got hot, I was telling my brother how he had hit some big shots against us last year and that we should keep a body on him. I was right, but I wouldn't have minded if I was wrong. He's the kind of player that isn't consistent enough to be mentioned when teams strategize defensive schemes, but he'll hit shots that hurt you. Teams rarely ever leave a guy like Peja open, but guys like Padgett are left open all the time. Most of the time they miss those shots, but for some reason, they seem to hit them when playing against us.

It looks like the first and second guy was moving in the rotation, but the third man wasn't rotating. Our big's should’ve been more aware of that.

I noticed trademark Jon Barry out there. He's great if he's on your team, but when not, he is quite the annoying personality. :)

I think this was an excellent win considering all the health issues we are dealing with right now.
And Webb is most definitely turning into the clutch 3pt. shooter.

GO WEBB!

Wow that was mad crazy. I knew Webber was gonna make it, he made almost every three that he took in the fourth quarter. BTW - Was he allowed to listen to the Rocket's huddle like that?

yeah i think so.. i think what happened was, the rockets were given time to bring someone in for wesley cause he fouled out.. then they used that time to strategize.. i don't think there was a time out called.. if a team doesn't call a timeout, the opposing players don't need to go to their (own) bench.. they can listen in if they want..

players often do that when they have the chance..

Msn what a game - I was so depressed when the Kings lost their lead, and then so elated after Webb's big three. That had to be one of the coolest looking last second shots I ever saw; everyone believed Bibby would take it. The performance in OT def. made up for the lack of performance in the 4th quarter.

C-Webb: A If you score 30, defend Yao well with that knee, and play clutch you should get an A every time.

Bibby: A Bibby was very consistent throughout the came and worked the pick and roll extremly well with Webb.

B.Miller: A- May not have scored as much as usual but played very efficiently and did a lot of little things.

Cat: B+ Came up huge during overtime to make up for forced shots during regulation.

Barnes: B Had a lot of effort and really played his heart out. T-Mac took advantage a bit in the 2nd half although I guess its unfair to make such a comparison.

Songaila: B+ Played excellent basketball for the time he was given. Sunk open shots and crashed the boards as usual.
Martin: C+ Although he didn't do anything wrong, he also didn't seem to have the same effect on the game as he did the othre night against the Spurs. Not particularily important though considering how few minutes he played.

Re: Padgett. It's seems like a big reason Sac has trouble closing out games is the way they fail to play consistent defense to the stripe against good shooting teams. With the rockets, they BARELY got away with it, and with the Suns and Phoneix? Forget about it! That's what makes SA so darn strong - almost never an uncontested three. It seems like something the kings can really work on - interior defense is looking as good as I've seen it in years (though that's not to say there isn't room for improvement there as well).

Great game, great grades.

I give Webber A+ for that three pointer. He faked _me_ out of my shoes, let alone T-Mac... And I was standing, like, 1500 miles away.

When Webber was one the freethrow line in the last min or so and made two clutch freethrows, I told myself Webber still has some gas left and luckily he did.

Webber da man!!! :)

Bwahahahaha!! This is truly funny, bozz. You owe me a keyboard. ;)

Webbers fakes are now a thing of beausty. The fake on T Mac for the game tieng threewas awsome, but earlier he fished out Yao and Padgett with four fakes before he finaly took a clean shot. He is soing this more and more the reated fakes and defeneders keep biting.

Aha, dont forget the "cat" game Webb played with Howard. How many times did he pump fake, twice? I loved it

Would you rather Mcgrady would of had a wide open look or Padgett?? T-Mac was rising up(even in good single coverage) and dropping bombs. Even when he didn't shoot the jumper he penetrated and got them good looks at 3. T-Mac was feelin it! We stopped that,(with the double) and when it came right down to it, Padgett couldn't make it. T-Mac is a guy who has scored 13 pts in less than 60 seconds this year. You pick your poison.

Miller would only half commit in his help defense anyway. Would have been better off playing man to man. I would rather have a T-Mac shot that is contested than giving a known 3-point shooter an open look 7 times in a row.

The Suns AND Phoenix?? You're right, that's quite a challenge.

They can get the Suns, maybe. But Phoenix? Oh, buddy. That's a different story.

I know. I'm a brat. Sue me.

That's just another sign that this year he's making post-injury adjustments in his game. If he keeps doing that he could become more valuable player overll then he was before the injury. Just not as athletic, but who cares.

Yeah, what is missing on the athletic side can be more than compensated for by overall smarter playing and dedication. I think that Webb has really lived up to being a leader of this team, and I am very impressed by the playing we are seeing.

Could not agree more Bozz, in another thread I remarked that what he has lost physicaly he has more than made up for in wily smart play and leadership.

If you don't double(show hard) on that pick T-Mac is going to get an open shot or even worse get into the lane! You realize who Tracy Mcgrady is don't you? Not even Doug was capable of stopping him in man coverage. Miller is slow as hell, get over it already(He's a 7' white guy from Indiana). There is only so much you can do with our team defensively. Time to agree to disagree I think. I'll just say this... who missed a wide open look when the Rockets needed it? and Scoreboard.

Now that I think of it didn't we beat Phoenix in Phoenix? Or was it the Suns? I'm not sure...

I agree. Kings were double teaming Tmac which kept leaving Scott Padgett open. Give Padgett credit, he knocked them down. When he wasn't open, it was either JB or David Wesley, two other good 3 point shooters.

From espn.com:

Scott Padgett on the game: "I'm going to be honest with you -- I'm not going to create too many shots on my own. Tracy's greatness was the big reason because of it. If I'm on the other team, I would rather have me shoot it than Tracy."
