Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Artest ( A ) -- big first quarter with Ron in star mode. 11 pts and was hitting shots in the face of strong defense. Provided no offense in the second, but had some good spots of defense vs. Dirk. Should also be noted that Josh Howard could get nothing going, mostly against Ron, all night. Got us a couple of third quarter leads on one on one shots that you would normally call dumb, but that went in. And was big throughout that quarter, including picking Stackhouse's pocket (why exactly do guys still try to dribble across Ron's face considering those hands?). Battled inside ferociously int he 4th. Was not able to close the deal in the end, but was the engine (along with fellow banger Corliss) which drove this big effort. Did all of it playing with a front tooth knocked obviously askew and ready to fall out. Which has to be rather annoying I would think.
Thomas ( C- ) -- gave us a nice hustle boost in the first quarter, and while nothing special was contributing to the energy level. Unfortunately dumb and pouty is never too far away for Kenny, and it reared its ugly head in the third. Got back to back fouls at one point, one defense vs. Dirk, and then one for an illegal screen, that cost us our first tie with the Mavs. We caught back up, only to see Kenny hurt us worse with yet another illegal screen call a few minutes later, after which he went and got himself a technical just to top it off. Think that second illegal screen was a bad call, but ...duh. And of course when you lose by 2, it makes a difference. Particularly when you hit a three to only be behind by 1 in the last 10 seconds. Would have been tied, not had to foul, could play for OT etc. Of course any one play could have turned things, but that one was so unnecessary.
Miller ( B ) -- did very little in the first half and gave way to the more efective bench combo of Reef/Corliss. But came out of the lockerroom after half with a burst of, get this, rebounding and defense in the early third that helped us catch up to and tie the Mavs on several occasions. Was still sitting there with zero points midway through the 4th before he suddenly stepped up to hit his first two shots of the game at a key time, knocking down back to back jumpers to keep the pressure on the Mavs. And then popped up to hit the huge clutch three with 4 seconds to go to make it a 1 pt game and give us a final chance. Tough to grade here, but Brad did a lot of good things after half, and did them at key times.
Martin ( B+ ) -- quiet first quarter, but highlighted by some nice hustle, and one nice take of Devon George on the baseline. Used his quickness to good effect vs. Devon Harris defenisvely this time. Showed more one on one ability in this game than he has in all but a few previoius outings, and created a number of his shots for himself. Hit a big three to close the third and put us up 4. But missed the bigger clutch three to tie with 10 seconds to go. It was set up perfectly, clean look, just did not fall. Pretty much his normal numbers, but better than his normal game.
Bibby ( C ) -- modest first quarter, then sat out the entire second with the Kings bench playing well. Threw some bad bad passes at times, leaving his feet and just throwing the ball directly to Mavs players stepping in the passing lanes. Was kind of the forgotten starter out there, hitting a hsot here, a shot there, until he stepped up and hit a big jumper in the final minute that had us in position to maybe steal one, or at least get to OT. Was also the guy who hit Kevin in the corner for open three that could have potentially tied it with 10 seconds to go. This was not a good effort for Mike, but hit timely shots as he often does.
Reef ( B- ) -- effective off the bench in the first half, where I think he may had all of his numbers. Scored well, and while he looked right on the verge of fumbling away multiple balls, he managed to recover for the shot or the pass. Did nothing after half, did not rebound, but there was a contribution there at one point during a second quarter in which our bench excelled.
Salmons ( ) -- quiet outing, but perhaps more contrbution than the anemic numbers would suggest. Provided length and defense before half, hit an open three, and was a
Cisco ( ) -- length and defense before half
Douby ( INC ) -- came in in what looked to be a shaky substitution with us barely clinging into the game in the early 2nd quarter, but made a couple of hustle plays that helped a strong bench effort. Got a steal, an offensive board. Nothing huge, nothing that earned him any major minutes, but some positive there.
Corliss ( A- ) -- came in and gave us a big offensive boost off the bench in the second quarter, carrying us and helping us keep it close through half. Came back in the third and immediately hit a 15 footer, and hung around in the 4th to provide another one of those Ron/Corliss games reminscient of the Ron/Bonzi combo last year with two big burly bodies banging around inside. Of course Corliss's banging is as usual largely related to his scoring -- nothing on the glass again, or much in any other area. But he was fearless, competent, and the Mavs never did really find the right matchup for him. Gave us a big boost.

Muss ( ) --

This is probably the first loss in a long time that I don't feel disappointed or angry about... post.

That was a hard fought game. There was never a point when the Mavs got a huge lead. We were supposed to get blown out tonight. They could've given so many excuses for getting blown out... but they didn't and even almost won. I'm definitely happy with the way they played. I'm proud of those guys.

Agreed. Even some of the wins have raised a lot of doubts... This seemed like a surprisingly strong effort against one of the top NBA teams.

I liked the cohesiveness of the second squad. For the first time I can remember, they actually looked like a TEAM out there and not just a bunch of guys trying to beat each other out for playing time.

The second unit looked sharp as a whole.

Musselman and the unit did a solid job of going inside when they had foul trouble.

Kinda sad they stopped doing that, for some reason.

Definitely the best game of the year.

It would be less impressive if the Mavs had played a bad game and won, but I thought the Mavs played great tonight.

It's games like this one, the utah road win earlier in the year, and the Chicago road win earlier in the year that make you think this could be an upper-40's win team. Bad teams don't play competitively against the best teams in the league while being in that team's home court unless the home team plays terribly.

For example, I remember in I think it was 2002, I went to watch the kings play the nuggets at home when the nuggets were horrible. The nuggest played the game close until the end when Webb hit a layup for us which won the game. It wasn't so much that the nuggets were any good, we just played that badly to allow them into the game.

Different story tonight. The Mavs played great, turned the intensity up in the 4th - you would expect any other last place team to wilt but we were able to withstand and were in a position to win.

So what does it mean? Who knows....we have guys who have been on great teams before, and while I don't think we have the talent to ever be great, could we be pretty good (45-50 wins in a season)?

The Kings gave it everything they had, and the way the kings lost defines the problem. In a short span of time, Kenny, Reef, and Corliss each missed lay-ups or very close-in shots. In fact, all of the Kings missed a critical shot or two. Dirk and the Mavericks simply did not miss as many critical shots. The individual Maverick players are, on the whole, just a little better than the individual Kings players. Dirk is special. Not even Artest of kevin are as good as the tall German. The Kings were courageous, and it was a good game, but Dallas just has too many excellent players.

Kings fans should not feel cheated with that loss.

I can't believe what I'm reading on this thread. There are no good losses. No one will remember the Kings courageous play, or the fact that they played hard. This is professional basketball, not youth ball. You play to win in this league. It goes in the books as a loss and that's it.

Common dude.

Dallas is out of this world...Them and Phoenix are on a completly different level than the rest of the NBA.

When a team looks completly terrible and gets out and out beat by an injury delpleted Hornets, anything other than a blowout is a positive thing.

Im not saying it was a "Good loss," but it was step in the right direction, and that is a positive thing.

If that's how you feel, fine. No problem. There are a lot of us who are a little more realistic about our vision of this current Kings team.

Tonights game was cool, i expected to lose by 30 so i was actually ok with the end result.

At least when people are watching Sports Center they will know the Kings can still play basketball.

I know when you see a game like this is almost puts everything into a different perspective. I go back and realize that this team has at least been in almost every game, but when this kind of effort is there it makes a huge difference.

Don't you mean Bibby and Artest hitting their shots?

Well that and actually taking the time and energy to run some sort of offense and not jack up crap shots. ;)

You know lately Muss has really been utilizing Brad better. He is letting him pass the ball but they are still not setting up enough shots for him. Still our interior defense is what cost us the most tonight.

Well if we could rebound better then there might be some more shots to be had. I guess that's part of what you mean by interior defense.

Count me with the folks who were not disappointed by this game. It was so nice to see a team out there that was actually playing pretty darn well. And since I was bracing myself to see the Kings be totally embarrassed by the Mavs, it was nice to see our guys competing.

Would I rather see a win? Well, of course, but I was not disappointed by this effort. Not at all.

The reason people love the Kings and Sacramento is that WE as fans DO remember courageous play. :D This is why Sacramento is special.

Any idea what may have changed to make this astounding difference in ball distribution and team interaction?

Who flipped the switch? And why? The team seems able to play like this whenever they decide to.

To predict how this team may play on a given day is not easy or logical. So far the contrarians must be winning.

KHTK hosts were urging bettors to take Dallas and the 11 points. Strange. Glad I've never had the urge to gamble on sports. Very entertaining game though.

I don't think it's a matter of the team being "able to play like this whenever they decide to..."

What I saw was a semblance of sanity regarding substitutions and rotations, which could easily have contributed to the overall flow of the game.

We still aren't a GOOD team, by any stretch of the imagination. But if they can continue to put forth effort the fans will continue to support them through the lean time... and the trade value of the guys who may be leaving sooner rather than later won't be bargain basement.

All in all, we played hard and yet we didn't jeopardize our position in the ping pong ball sweepstakes.

Last night was a great reminder that this is a talented team, and also a great reminder that this team cannot beat a good team even while playing their absolute best. The lesson the Maloofs could take from the game is that the Kings can compete with good teams because the Kings are talented, the lesson they SHOULD take from the game is that the Kings at their best are still not good enough.
